Chapter 122: Rebuilding from Rhythm, Not Pride
We took the three-body shape at the lower setting.
Gianna held the outside cover.
Rei marked the rear angle and the gaps without yanking the axle. For the first stretch, the node stayed quiet.
"This is babysitting," Rei said under her breath.
"This is how you stay on the slate," I said.
"Push for full motor before I call it, and I drop you on purpose."
Gianna’s channel pulled once toward distance when Rei drifted a half-step too close in the shared space.
I felt it, named nothing dramatic, and adjusted distribution instead of chasing her with residual.
"Hold the line, Gia."
"I am holding it."
"I know. I’m not following you out of the drill."
A beat.
The anchor settled fractionally. Jenna’s glass stayed silent; silence was better than a buzzer.
At the first true conflict spike, Rei’s hunger for closure brushing Gianna’s demand for space, I did what I had promised.
"Secondary off."
The tracking link died clean.
Rei staggered a half step from the sudden absence, eyes flashing.
"I wasn’t even—"
"You were about to be."
I kept the primary chain live with Gianna.
"We rebuild from rhythm, not from pride."
Rei laughed once, sharp.
"Handler’s boy."
"Alive boy," I said.
"Reset. Primary thirty seconds. Tracking again. We earn motor."
Gianna flexed her fingers on the link, red eyes steady on mine.
"You’re less noisy when you decide the order before the room does."
"I’m trying."
"Keep trying when she stops being polite."
Rei was already back at the edge, offering her hand for the thread without being asked, smile thin and interested.
"Again," she said.
"I’ll wear your leash for data. Don’t get used to me liking it."
"I won’t."
[Sequence compliance: Active]
[Primary priority: Enforced]
[Host regulation: Stable]
I marked the run, settled into Gianna’s rhythm first, and only then let Rei ride the edge of my vision, secondary, tracked, not allowed to steer, while the provisional window kept counting down outside the hall and the dual feed, for the first time, failed to tear itself apart in the opening breath.
Afternoon block turned the private hall into a stress box.
Jenna’s schematic projected at the far wall: escort path, three pressure zones, a reinforced training dummy tagged as the package.
The fail condition was simple.
If the package took a critical hit before the end buzzer, the run scored incomplete.
Limited mana markers. No free spar between Gianna and Rei unless the glass called it.
"Roles," I said before we stepped in.
"Gia, outside cover and kinetic denial. Rei, rear angles and interruption. I distribute. Tracking bandwidth on Rei until I call motor. If the node shakes, secondary drops first."
Rei’s eyes flashed.
"We already did the leash."
"And the leash is why the morning didn’t tear the axle. Same rule under a fail condition."
Gianna checked the dummy’s path with a short glance.
"If you over-correct for me, the package dies. Don’t."
"I know."
[Joint stress envelope: Active]
[Primary: Gianna Everheart — Motor]
[Secondary: Rei Lawless — Tracking]
[Objective: Package integrity]
"Mark," Jenna’s voice came from the glass, flat.
We moved.
The first zone was clean.
Gianna’s telekinetic taps knocked wide the early projectiles.
Rei’s tracking feed painted the rear approach without yanking my feet.
I held center with a single chain ready and Fracture Step coiled, not spent. For ten seconds the sequence from the morning held under real pressure.
Then Gianna’s channel pulled.
Hard distance reflex, Rei had closed a half-step to intercept a low construct, and the primary anchor treated the proximity like a threat to regulation.
The pull hit my core.
I followed it a fraction too long, body angling to keep Gianna’s rhythm comfortable instead of the package’s line.
The dummy took the hit.
Bam.
A training round cracked against its shoulder plating hard enough to light the failure indicator yellow.
"Package compromised," the hall AI announced.
Rei swore.
"You’re steering for her feelings."
"I’m aware."
I didn’t look at either of them.
"Reset positions. We are not done."
"You just burned the clean run—"
"Rei. Rear angle. Now. Gia, deny the next wide cone. I’m taking center pull."
Fuck.
I have to focus.
I didn’t wait for agreement.
A chain snapped to the dummy’s frame and dragged it back onto the scored path.
Fracture Step cut me laterally through a pressure burst, after-image drawing a low shot that would have caught Rei’s knee.
Tracking feed screamed a blind spot; I barked it before her instincts could turn it into a full motor grab.
"Left high—Gia, pin it. Rei, don’t close on my primary. Interrupt from outside."
Gianna’s kinetic force slammed the tagged drone into the wall.
Rei flashed a thin blood edge, budgeted, not wasteful, and cut the next launcher’s aim without crossing into Gianna’s space.
The node trembled. Dual conflict rose like heat.
"Secondary off."
Rei’s tracking link died.
She staggered, teeth bared.
"Revien—"
"I called the rule."
Primary chain stayed live with Gianna.
The dummy kept moving.
"You get the line back when you hold the angle without crowding her."
Gianna’s breathing stayed even, but the anchor channel flickered with something that wasn’t only focus.
She had felt the drop order. Seen it. The same hierarchy from the morning, enforced when it cost us speed.
"Package is still yellow," she said.
"Then we clear yellow. On my mark. Mark."
I threw Rei the thread again without apology.
Tracking only.
We hit the second zone uglier and more honest.
When a blast line swept wide enough to catch both of them, I didn’t choose with a speech. Chains forked, one loop braced Gianna’s waist and pulled her out of the shear, the other caught Rei’s forearm and yanked her into the shadow of my step.
Forced contact, both of them against the same motion, my body the axle for half a second of shared momentum.
Rei’s essence flared where her skin met the link.
Gianna’s channel spiked, then locked down hard rather than drink or flee.
"Don’t turn that into a conversation," I said through my teeth.
"Move."
They moved.
