Chapter 68: A Glitch in the Soul
"Why did I faint?"
For the first time since I came into this world, the system didn’t answer.
The silence stretched.
Not the usual brief processing delay or the dry pause it used to do when it was about to deliver something unpleasant.
Just empty static where a reply should have been.
The film on the wall kept looping its heroic sunset montage, smiling supports and Vanguards frozen in perfect coordination. The apartment felt colder.
I sat forward.
"System."
Nothing.
After several long seconds, a single line flickered into existence, the text slightly off-center, as if forced.
[Host’s body was overloaded with residual mana from Supporter Shen and Vanguard Rei Lawless.]
I stared at it.
Something’s wrong.
"You know that’s not the full truth. I know Mira’s readings only show what the bracelet and the monitoring patch can trace. I know my own body. While I was unconscious, multiple screens flashed. I was talking without control. You know something."
The interface remained still for another beat.
Then new text appeared, colder than usual.
[Host’s memory appears partially fragmented.]
[Recommendation: Erase unnecessary residual images to preserve core stability.]
My blood ran cold.
"Don’t you fucking dare."
I stood up from the sofa.
The movement was too fast. The residual heat from earlier still sat under my ribs.
[Activating Memory Erasure Protocol...]
"Stop. Fuck—stop!"
The world tilted.
My vision blanked at the edges, tunneling inward as if someone had reached into my skull and started pulling threads.
There were no clear thoughts left, only pressure and a rising static roar.
Multiple beeping sounds echoed in my head.
Fragmented screens crashed across the darkness behind my eyes, corrupted, glitching, overlapping so hard the text tore itself apart.

[Voic̷e Autho̷rization: Ov̷erride]
In the middle of the cascading errors, I heard my own voice, flat, empty of everything that made it mine.
"Gianna’s first."
That was all.
The floor came up to meet me for the second time in one day.
Bam.
Worst of all, the bracelet on my wrist stayed silent. No red alert. No priority spike. No tightening band. The class had already adapted.
Whatever had just happened, the monitoring hardware had been instructed, or forced, to ignore it.
Silence.
—
When I opened my eyes again, I was in the bed.
The ceiling was the familiar one. The sheets smelled faintly of clean laundry and Jenna’s perfume.
Night had fully settled outside the windows; the city lights pressed against the glass in soft orange and white. My head ached with a distant pressure, like the aftermath of a migraine that had been surgically removed and then poorly stitched.
I sat up slowly. No more spinning. The Echo Partition still sat behind my ribs, quiet and sealed.
Gianna’s anchor remained in place near my core, undisturbed. Everything felt... normal.
Too normal.
I remember the system erasing my memory. But I don’t remember why it did that.
What did it erase?
I swung my legs over the side of the bed and walked into the main room.
Jenna was there, sleeves rolled up, moving with quiet efficiency around the kitchen counter. Something savory was warming on the low heat plate.
She glanced over her shoulder when she heard me.
"You slept on the couch earlier," she said.
"I moved you when I came back."
"Thanks. Was kinda tired."
She turned fully, studying my face with the same sharp attention she used in debriefings.
Her eyes narrowed a fraction.
"Everything okay? I know when your voice sounds off."
I forced a small, easy shrug and leaned against the counter like nothing in the world was wrong.
"Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine. Just nervous about tomorrow."
Jenna held the look a second longer, then the corner of her mouth curved.
"Understandable. First real day out without monitoring or drills. Here."
She set a plate in front of me and another for herself.
"Eat. You’re still under the twenty-four-hour restriction, but calories aren’t restricted."
We ate together in the low light.
The food was simple and good. Conversation stayed light: academy timelines, a brief update on the paperwork she was burying to keep Rei at arm’s length for a few more days, a dry comment about Mira’s latest complaint regarding experimental stabilizers.
I answered when required. I even managed a short laugh when she described one of the ranking board’s more absurd requests.
None of it touched the corrupted name still burned somewhere behind my eyes.
None of it touched the sound of my own voice saying Gianna’s first while the system tried to erase the evidence.
After the plates were cleared, Jenna placed a small sealed packet on the table between us.
Two pale tablets in a clear strip.
"For you. Tomorrow."
I looked at them.
"Is this...?"
"Mild suppressants," she said.
"Not the full experimental stack. Just enough to keep heat and minor output fluctuations from drawing attention while you’re walking around the city. Take one before you leave in the morning. The second is backup if you feel anything unusual."
I picked up the strip. The plastic felt ordinary.
"You think I’ll need them?"
"I think you had a core episode less than twelve hours ago and you’re about to spend an entire day in public with my daughter."
Jenna’s voice stayed calm, practical.
"I would prefer both of you return in one piece and without another priority alert hitting the guild channel."
I nodded and slipped the tablets into my pocket.
"Thanks."
She watched me for another moment, then reached out and brushed a stray piece of violet hair back from my forehead with the same casual authority she always used.
"Get real sleep this time," she said.
"Not the half-conscious kind you do on the sofa. Tomorrow starts early if you’re serious about a full day."
"I am."
"Good."
Jenna turned back toward the kitchen to finish cleaning. I stayed seated at the table a little longer, the sealed tablets a small weight in my pocket, the bracelet cool and obedient against my wrist, and the memory of a glitched file name still sitting behind my eyes like a splinter I was no longer allowed to examine.
I didn’t ask the system about it again.
I already knew it would not answer honestly.
When I finally returned to the bedroom, I lay down in the dark and stared at the ceiling until the city lights blurred.
Fuck you.
You’re not hurting Gianna.
