Chapter 33: Domesticated Pride and Grocery Bags
Gianna Everheart had a very specific list of interests, and managing a guy’s fragile ego didn’t even crack the top hundred.
Whenever Jenna brought up the practical idea of practicing with a support class, Gianna would just scoff, cross her arms, and roll her eyes.
"I would rather fight for myself than depend on a walking battery in the middle of a raid," she would say, and that was exactly how it went for years.
She had her own tight-knit circle of friends, and they ran trial dungeons and brutal combat simulations just fine on their own. She was a Vanguard, and Vanguards were supposed to lead, not babysit.
All of that shifted the day her mother brought a strange guy into their lives.
"He’s staying with you?" Gianna shouted, staring at Jenna as if the Guildmaster had lost her mind.
"Yes, he is," Jenna replied, sipping her coffee.
"Why? Why are you taking this kind of risk for a stranger? Just let the Empress handle it and let’s wash our hands of the whole mess before it blows up in our faces."
"It might seem like a risk right now, Gia, but if he is someone special, we cannot just let him go to a rival guild."
"Mom! You don’t even know him!"
"Listen to me, Gia."
Jenna set her mug down, stepped forward, and wrapped her arms around her daughter, pulling her into a grounding hug.
"My levels have become stable. I cannot evolve anymore, and soon, more gates might open that will far exceed my capability. I know you are strong, and you are my girl, but I cannot leave you alone here. If he’s a dud who doesn’t have anything worthwhile to offer, we will throw him out on the street. But if he is someone whose power might benefit you in any way, then we have to take the risk. I will take the risk for you."
Take the risk for her?
Gianna didn’t cry.
She just wasn’t the type to shed tears over guild politics, but she hugged her mother back harder than she ever had before.
Then, she met him in the guild.
He had messy violet hair and piercing yellow eyes, and he was fairly handsome, but he definitely wasn’t the submissive guy her mom had described.
The very first thing he did was size her up, looking her up and down with a gaze that made her skin prickle with irritation.
Once she actually lost their first battle, uncontrollable rage flared up in her chest. Her Vanguard instincts screamed at her to stay far away from him, telling her he was dangerous, yet he acted so frustratingly normal.
He was always just there, tagging along to buy clothes, annoying her every single minute of the day with his casual attitude, and constantly trying to close the gap between them, but he always held himself back right at the very edge of the line.
It all finally boiled over when he pinned her against the room wall.
"Do you hate me?" he asked.
No, she didn’t hate him.
She just hated the idea of him. She hated the concept of a guy who was supposed to magically be her pillar just because a researcher designated his class that way.
But then, the inevitable happened.
She gave way to her own buried desires and kissed him, even though she knew exactly what would happen the second their lips touched.
Getting close to a guy like him was as simple as fighting a battle that was already lost from the start, yet she leaned in and did it anyway.
Why?
Because of his words.
He didn’t treat her like a meal ticket or a bodyguard.
"Don’t think for me," he had told her, looking annoyed that she was trying to push him away for his own good.
"But it doesn’t mean I’m going to throw you away."
"You are the first person I got close to in this world, and you are the one teaching me how to survive," he had replied, staring right into her red eyes with sincerity.
"That is not for nothing."
"What do you want?" he asked her in the training hall.
"You are my first kiss."
That’s what triggered her.
And then it just happened, and the make-out session was intense enough to make her head spin and her knees go weak.
But the craziest part was that he didn’t force a system skill on her.
Men in support classes always did that, pushing artificial pleasure onto their Vanguard to build an unbreakable dependency, but he didn’t use a single active skill.
He just touched her like a normal person.
Yet, she leveled up anyway.
Now, fresh out of the training room and finally done with her daily paperwork, Gianna found herself standing in front of the local market, holding a plastic bag full of fresh vegetables.
Why was she even doing this?
To cook for him.
Fuck him, she thought, glaring down at an innocent green pepper in her hand.
She was the top prospect of the guild. She was an elite Vanguard who didn’t take orders from anyone, and here she was, acting like a domesticated housewife just because a guy with yellow eyes knew exactly how to hold her waist.
It was humiliating, but she couldn’t bring herself to drop the bag.
She carried the groceries all the way to his apartment anyway, marching down the hallway with a sigh before she reached out and rang the doorbell, half-hoping he wouldn’t even be home.
A few seconds later, the door swung open.
He stood there shirtless, his hair a mess, and he looked exhausted, like he had just run a marathon.
Gianna stared at his chest for half a second, her brain stalling before her stubborn pride kicked back in.
She clamped her jaw shut, her expression freezing into a deadpan mask.
"It was a bad idea."
She turned around on her heel, fully intending to march right back to the elevator and throw the vegetables in the trash on her way out.
But before she could take a single step away from his door, his hand shot out. His fingers wrapped firmly around her wrist, the warmth of his skin sending an immediate jolt up her arm.
He pulled her gently but firmly inside the apartment, kicking the door shut behind her.
And the worst part was, she didn’t even try to resist.
