Chapter 173 - 172 Do You Recognize This Card
[ EMILY ]
The sharp, sickening sound of Naya’s palm striking Leo’s jaw echoes through the pristine bistro lobby.
The immediate aftermath is a frozen, breathless vacuum of time. The wealthy patrons standing by the mahogany bar stare in absolute silence. The young hostess whimpers, shrinking completely behind her wooden podium. Leo does not move a single muscle; his jaw remains locked, his dark eyes staring straight ahead, absorbing the physical assault with the terrifying, robotic discipline of a veteran operative.
But a dark, violent inferno detonates inside my chest.
Naya Zone stands there, her chest heaving under her crimson designer dress, a brief flash of panicked realization crossing her features. She knows she crossed a dangerous line, but her arrogant, political entitlement quickly violently overrides her fear. She lifts her chin, daring me to retaliate. She wants me to strike her. She wants me to assault the daughter of the presidential frontrunner in a room full of high-society witnesses so she can completely destroy me in federal court.
I see the trap forming behind her bright blue eyes. Hitting her directly would drag Alistair into a catastrophic, highly publicized political war.
But I am not going to let this go unpunished. If she wants to play a game of proxies, I will gladly step onto the board.
I do not look at Naya. I shift my gaze slightly to the right, locking my eyes onto the impeccably dressed, broad-shouldered man standing just a few feet behind her.
Quinn. The elite private investigator and personal muscle she keeps on a permanent retainer. He stands there in his immaculate gray suit, watching the exchange with a smug, highly satisfied smirk on his face.
I take one step forward, entirely bypassing Naya.
Before Quinn can even register the shift in my trajectory, I raise my right arm. I plant my boots firmly against the polished hardwood floor, pivot my hips, and channel every single ounce of my burning, protective fury directly into the palm of my hand.
CRACK.
The sound of my hand colliding with Quinn’s face is infinitely louder and far more violent than the slap Naya delivered.
The sheer force of the impact snaps the investigator’s head violently to the side. He stumbles backward, his leather shoes slipping against the polished floorboards. He crashes heavily into an empty cocktail table, sending two crystal water glasses shattering onto the ground.
The entire restaurant lobby erupts into a chorus of shocked gasps.
Quinn catches his balance against the wall. He touches his cheek, his eyes wide with absolute, blinding shock. A dark, angry red handprint is already blossoming across his pale skin.
I stand my ground, slowly lowering my stinging hand. I do not break eye contact with him.
"Let me make something incredibly clear to both of you," I announce. My voice is dangerously calm, carrying a freezing, uncompromising authority that easily silences the murmuring crowd. I glance at Naya, who is staring at me with her jaw completely unhinged. "I protect my own. If you ever lay a hand on my people, I will retaliate directly against yours. That is the rule of engagement. Do not ever test it again."
Naya’s momentary shock instantly vaporizes, replaced by a screaming, volatile rage.
"You filthy, arrogant bitch!" Naya shrieks, entirely losing whatever remained of her high-society composure. She points a shaking finger at my face. "You dare strike my personnel? You think you can assault an employee of the Zone family without consequences? You just declared war on my father!"
"I simply returned the favor, Naya," I reply coldly, stepping back to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Leo. "If you cannot handle the consequences of your own violence, keep your hands to yourself."
Naya closes the distance between us, her blue eyes practically vibrating with toxic, unhinged obsession. She lowers her voice, dropping the volume so only I can hear the venom dripping from her words.
"You are going to lose everything," Naya hisses, her gaze dropping to my stomach for a brief, malicious second. "The second you lose that child, you lose Alistair’s protection. You have no bloodline, no pedigree, and no leverage. The moment that baby is out of the picture, you will be thrown directly back into the slum you crawled out of. And I will be the one standing next to him, watching you beg."
I stare into her eyes, feeling absolutely zero fear. Her threats are built on a foundation of lies she constructed in her own head.
"Is there a problem here?"
A frantic, breathless voice cuts through the heavy tension.
I turn my head. A middle-aged man in a tailored, pinstriped navy suit is practically sprinting down the corridor from the back offices. He carries a linen handkerchief, furiously wiping a layer of thick sweat from his balding forehead.
This is Vincent Ziggler, the owner and general manager of the French bistro.
He stops in the middle of the lobby, looking in sheer panic at the shattered glass on the floor, the angry red mark on Quinn’s cheek, and the lethal standoff between myself and Naya Zone.
"Mr. Ziggler," Naya snaps, immediately asserting her dominance. "Your useless hostess allowed this common trash to insult me and assault my security detail. I demand you remove her from the premises immediately and escort me to my VIP room."
Vincent Ziggler pales considerably. He looks nervously at Naya, recognizing her instantly, before turning his panicked gaze toward me. He sees Leo standing behind me—a towering wall of elite tactical security—and realizes he is trapped between two incredibly dangerous forces.
"Ladies, please, let us not escalate this any further," Mr. Ziggler pleads, wringing the handkerchief between his hands. "I deeply apologize for the confusion regarding the reservations. I have a beautiful, semi-private alcove near the wine cellar. I can have it prepared for one of you immediately, completely on the house. A complimentary bottle of our finest vintage—"
"No," Naya and I say in perfect, overlapping unison.
"I reserved the VIP room, Mr. Ziggler," I state firmly, holding his anxious gaze. "And I intend to use it. I will not be relocated to an alcove because you lack the spine to honor your own reservation ledger."
"I am the daughter of Marcus Zone," Naya counters loudly, stepping closer to the sweating restaurant owner. "I am not sitting in a drafty wine cellar. I am taking the room."
Before Mr. Ziggler can attempt another pathetic compromise, Quinn steps forward.
The investigator’s cheek is bright red and slightly swollen, but his professional composure has returned, replaced by a cold, calculating malice. He pulls a sleek leather wallet from his breast pocket and flips it open, flashing a silver private security credential directly in Mr. Ziggler’s face.
"Listen to me very carefully, Vincent," Quinn says, his voice low and laced with heavy, undeniable intimidation. "Congressman Zone is currently leading the national polls by twelve points. In a few months, he will be sitting in the Oval Office. He dictates federal tax codes, commercial zoning laws, and health department funding. If you refuse to seat his daughter in the room she requested, I will personally ensure this bistro is subjected to a relentless string of audit inspections until your doors are permanently shuttered. Do you understand me?"
Mr. Ziggler physically flinches. The color completely drains from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.
The political weight drops onto his shoulders like an anvil. He operates a high-end restaurant in a city governed by strict commercial permits. The threat of a targeted federal audit is an immediate, catastrophic death sentence for his business. He cannot afford to fight the Zone family.
Mr. Ziggler slowly turns his head to look at me. His eyes are filled with genuine, deeply apologetic misery, but his survival instinct completely overrides his sense of basic fairness.
"I am incredibly sorry, Miss," Mr. Ziggler stammers, bowing his head slightly. He refuses to look me in the eye. "But there has been a terrible scheduling error. The VIP room was double-booked. I must ask you to wait in the main lobby, or... or perhaps dine elsewhere today."
Naya lets out a loud, triumphant laugh.
The sound is incredibly grating. She crosses her arms, looking at me with a sickening expression of absolute, uncontested victory. She proved her point. She used her father’s massive political hammer to smash my reservation, publicly demonstrating exactly who controls the social hierarchy in Asuir City.
"Run along now, Emily," Naya mocks, a vicious smirk curving her lips. "Take your giant guard dog and go find a cheap food truck. Leave the fine dining to the people who actually belong here."
She turns toward the corridor, fully expecting me to turn around in quiet, humiliated defeat and walk out the glass front doors.
I do not move a single inch.
I maintain my position in the center of the lobby. I reach into the back pocket of my denim jeans and pull out my sleek leather wallet. I flip it open with a sharp flick of my wrist.
I bypass my standard credit cards. I slide my fingers into the hidden, encrypted slot in the back and slowly extract a heavy, solid-metal black card. It lacks a magnetic strip or a visible microchip. It features only one thing: a deeply engraved, geometric silver crest, and a single word stamped in sharp, elegant lettering.
Bordeaux101.
The ambient chatter in the lobby remains steady, but as I hold the metal card up in the air, the heavy, polished metal catches the bright light of the crystal chandelier overhead.
I look directly at the sweating, terrified restaurant owner.
"Mr. Ziggler," I say, my voice ringing out with crystal-clear, razor-sharp authority.
Vincent Ziggler stops wiping his forehead. He turns back to look at me, his eyes immediately dropping to the heavy black card pinched between my fingers.
"Before you finalize your decision," I continue smoothly, watching the sheer, unadulterated terror slowly dawn in his eyes, "I highly recommend you take a very close look at what I am holding. Tell me, Mr. Ziggler... do you recognize this card?"
