Chapter 468: Why Do You Look Down on Me?
The man didn't finally fall asleep until the early hours of the morning.
When he woke up, it was already the next day.
He groggily went out to eat, then started drinking again in the afternoon.
But after what happened yesterday, his usual drinking buddies didn't have the guts to join him. They all made excuses, saying they'd see him in a few days.
The man was a serious alcoholic. What little money he earned was mostly spent on booze, so he couldn't stand to go without.
Since no one would join him, he found a small barbecue stand and started drinking by himself.
Not far from the small stand, where the new district began, stood a high-end hotel.
And now, on the top floor of that hotel, Xiao Ye and Zhu Chen stood before a window, looking down.
"I've already performed my calculations. In about three days, this man will make his move and have blood on his hands."
"My divination revealed the same result." Zhu Chen looked at Xiao Ye. "It seems that in three days, the calamity star's prophecy will be fulfilled. We must get it right on the first try!"
"Of course."
They were both very confident, but since they were dealing with a calamity star, any mistake would be disastrous.
That afternoon, the man came home after drinking and, in a rage, started smashing things around the house again.
"Who are you to look down on me?!"
He didn't know who had spread the stories about what he'd done at the restaurant and the food street.
Plenty of people in the neighborhood knew him, and now they all knew what had happened.
The man didn't think beating his wife was shameful, because he had paid good money to marry her.
In his eyes, his wife was his property.
So no matter what outsiders said, he never felt truly ashamed. But this time was different!
He furiously smashed the last fragile object in the house. Seeing nothing left to break, he finally went to sleep.
The man worked a night shift job with a "four days on, three days off" schedule.
For the next two days, he continued to drink every day.
Only now, he was always alone. And since he had little money, he could only go to the small local shops.
Almost no one liked him. Every time they saw him, they treated him like the plague.
The man got completely drunk, went home to sleep it off, and then came out to drink again at seven in the evening.
He found a small, nearby shop and went inside.
When the owner saw it was him, he frowned in disgust.
'It's this guy! Because of him, our already-struggling business has gotten even worse!'
"Sorry, we're closed for the day. Go drink somewhere else."
The man had clearly seen him preparing a delivery order just a moment ago. "Boss, what do you mean? You're turning down business?"
If he didn't show up, the owner could probably close up by eight or nine.
But when he came, he would drink nonstop, often until the middle of the night, forcing the owner to stay up with him.
If that were all, it might be bearable, but he barely made any money off the guy.
"That's right. We're about to close. Something came up at home, so we're closing early. This last one is just a delivery order."
The man glared at him, but when he saw the owner wasn't going to back down, he cursed under his breath and stormed out.
He went to other shops.
The owners there looked just as unhappy to see him.
The man was notorious for being a terrible drunk. He would drink for four or five hours every night, but his final bill would only be a few dozen yuan.
No owner could put up with that.
"Sorry, we're about to close."
The man could only try a third shop.
"Sorry, we're not serving anyone else."
"We're closing up. The stove is already out. Try somewhere else."
The man walked out of the fifth shop. Any further would be a bit of a walk.
Besides, prices were even higher outside the Old Town District.
"What the hell is going on!" the man fumed. But with no other choice, he had to head back.
Just then, he noticed another shop not too far away.
It was a small shop he'd never seen before, but it was suddenly open for business today.
He pushed the door open and saw a middle-aged woman sitting inside. Seeing a customer, she came forward enthusiastically to greet him.
The man had planned on just having some cheap beer or Erguotou, but the woman coaxed him into ordering some more expensive foreign liquor.
You didn't have to be a genius to know that the foreign liquor at a small place like this was definitely fake.
So after just one bottle, the man's head was spinning. "No, I'm not drinking any more!"
The woman tried to coax him further, but the man unceremoniously slapped her hand away. "Don't... don't think I don't know! You women are all just after my money!"
"Get lost! I'm going home! I'm not wasting my money on you bitches!"
Seeing he was truly drunk and spewing insults, the woman shoved him out the door without a second thought. "With that kind of tolerance, you have the nerve to come out drinking?"
"And you talk so nasty, too. Serves you right you don't have a wife! Ptooey! What a piece of trash!"
The man stumbled along the road.
The road leading to the Old Town District was almost deserted in the middle of the night, and even several of the streetlights were broken.
As he was walking, he heard a car horn honk behind him.
The man cursed as he moved aside, only to see it was a luxury car.
The car didn't go much farther before a woman who looked to be in her thirties got out.
She seemed to be feeling unwell. She leaned against a tree trunk and vomited for a while before she felt a little better.
The man watched from a short distance behind.
He could tell at a glance that this woman was rich. She had such a nice car, and her clothes were made of fine fabric that shimmered faintly under the nearby streetlight.
'Why?'
'Why does this woman have a better life than me?'
'Women are nothing but accessories for men! They're just toys, property!'
'Men are the ones who should be out and about! A car this nice should be driven by a man!'
The thought of being rejected by so many shops today filled his chest with a nameless, vicious anger.
He suddenly collapsed to the ground. His ankle hit something, and he cried out in pain.
The noise startled the woman.
She watched for a moment, then hurried over. "Are you all right?"
It seems that after living in a peaceful world for so long, kind people will always extend a helping hand without hesitation.
The woman walked up and even offered her hand. "Do you need me to take you to the hospital?"
The man looked at her. She was beautiful, and as she bent over, her collar gaped open slightly.
'This bitch is trying to seduce me!'
'Why else would she come over to help me in the middle of the night?!'
At this thought, a surge of boldness came over the man. He grabbed the woman's hand and lunged into the nearby bushes.
"What are you doing?!" The woman struggled in terror. "Let go of me!"
The man clamped a hand tightly over her mouth, pinned her down with his body, and used his other hand to unbuckle his pants.
"Shut up! Weren't you trying to seduce me? Well, tonight I'll show you a good time!"
The woman shook her head frantically, tears filling her eyes.
'I just saw him fall and was worried something might happen to him this late at night, so I kindly asked what was wrong... How did it turn into this?'
'If I had known this would happen, I never would have tried to help!'
