Chapter 325: Stay Here and Don't Move
Wells turned to go back, but several men in black had already appeared.
They were wearing protective suits and cradling machine guns.
Clearly, they already knew that Wells and Xiao Ye were the source of the incident.
"What do we do? They found us!" Wells panicked, his outburst giving him away.
Seeing this, Xiao Ye didn't hesitate. He acted immediately.
He flew forward with two kicks, sending them crashing to the ground.
Xiao Ye picked up one of their machine guns. "Professor, stay behind me."
Wells nodded, cautiously following Xiao Ye while asking incessantly, "We can get out of here, right?"
"Oh god, I never should have let you transfer the data. This is a disaster."
"I'm not that familiar with this lab's security forces, but I know there are a lot of them. There are only two of us—we'll never escape!"
Xiao Ye turned back and barked coldly, "If you don't want to die, then shut up!"
Wells instantly fell silent. 'It's too late for regrets now.'
'At this point, my only choice is to follow Xiao Ye. I've already betrayed this place.'
'Even if they let me live, it would be life in prison.'
The two had just stepped out of the corridor when they heard footsteps approaching from all sides.
Xiao Ye knew a lot of people were coming. He could dodge their attacks, but that didn't mean Wells could.
He shoved the professor into a nearby room. "Professor Wells, wait for me in here."
The door happened to have a pane of transparent glass, offering a clear view of the outside.
Wells didn't dare make a sound, hiding cautiously inside.
The next second, a group of men in black appeared.
Not seeing Wells, they immediately raised their machine guns and closed in on Xiao Ye.
"Hand over the professor!"
Xiao Ye said nothing, instead aiming the gun at the ceiling.
BANG!
A shot rang out.
It hit the light fixture directly overhead.
The entire corridor was instantly plunged into darkness as sparks flew.
However, light spilled in from the corner, providing just enough visibility.
Seizing the moment of confusion, Xiao Ye made his move.
He was incredibly fast, giving them no time to prepare.
In less than a minute, he had taken care of them all.
Xiao Ye opened the door and pulled Wells out. "Let's go!"
He took just one step forward before sensing something. He immediately yanked Wells back into the room.
The next moment, countless bullets ripped through the corridor.
The sound of gunfire was deafening.
Wells trembled all over, terrified. "I... I don't want to die!"
"I'm here. You won't die. Just remember to do as I say. Don't forget, I'm the only one you can listen to now!"
Wells had previously thought that he could easily leave the lab by leveraging his position.
Once he was in the forest, he figured he could find a way to escape.
But he never expected to be discovered so quickly.
Whenever he felt afraid, he had a subconscious urge to talk a lot.
Xiao Ye shot him a glare. "Don't talk."
Even after the gunfire outside stopped, he still showed no intention of leaving.
An unknown amount of time passed before a second round of gunfire began.
After three consecutive volleys, someone finally approached.
Xiao Ye used the reflection in the glass wall opposite them to pinpoint their numbers and positions, then sprang into action.
After dispatching his opponents once more, he immediately pulled Wells along and headed for the next corridor.
In total, they had dealt with four waves of enemies and endured no fewer than seven barrages of gunfire.
"The main hall is just ahead. If we want to get out, we'll have to cross that open space. We'll never make it!"
Wells couldn't help but blurt out, "We'll be like moving targets out there!"
"Do you know where the electrical control room is?"
"I... I do. It's to the right of the main hall."
Xiao Ye handed him the machine gun. "You stay put right here. If anyone comes for you, shoot to kill."
Wells hesitated. "I..."
"Don't tell me you can't bring yourself to do it. Don't forget the test subjects who died at your hands."
"Remember, stay here and don't move!"
With that, Xiao Ye walked straight out.
He used his gun to precisely take out the surveillance cameras, making his way to a corridor near the main hall.
He took a deep breath, timed his moment, and used his gun for cover as he bounded toward the door of the power distribution room.
The door was locked. He blasted the lock.
The lock broke instantly. Before the enemy could react and open fire, he was already inside the power distribution room.
There were many electrical boxes here. Xiao Ye destroyed them one by one.
The lab's lights went out, section by section.
"What's going on?" a confused researcher asked.
"Damn it, the experiment I'm running needs power!"
"Hell, switch to the backup power supply already, or all my recent work will be ruined!"
The main hall went dark as well.
Activating the backup power required someone to first enter the backup power distribution room.
And they would need to unlock it, which meant Xiao Ye had a few minutes to work with.
He used the darkness to race back, pull Wells out, and bring him to the main hall.
Xiao Ye snatched the machine gun from his hands and fired continuously to provide cover for their retreat.
The enemy's firepower was intense, but every time they were about to pull the trigger, one of Xiao Ye's bullets would fly their way.
They had no choice but to take cover first.
After two exchanges of fire, Xiao Ye finally got Wells to the main entrance.
"We're in trouble!" Wells looked at the lock in front of them, frantic. "This lock can't be opened! It's on mandatory lockdown!"
"It'll stay sealed unless the level-one alert is resolved!"
Xiao Ye hadn't expected this complication. He had no choice but to lead Wells back. "Do you know any other exits?"
"No... Wait, I think I do know one."
"A test subject escaped once before. He broke through in one spot. They patched it up afterward, but it must still be a weak point!"
"Take me there!" 'It's impossible for the entire lab to have only one entrance.'
But Wells was so engrossed in his research every day that he had never even considered it.
He had probably never even been to the other parts of the facility outside of his own lab section.
The backup power came on.
The lights flickered back to life.
Without hesitation, Xiao Ye opened fire again, shooting out every camera he could see.
When he ran out of bullets, he slapped in a new magazine.
The two successfully made it to a laboratory deep inside the facility.
Wells pointed to the opposite wall. "It's right there."
"I have top-level clearance here, so I can lock this lab's door. Because of what happened last time, the door was reinforced."
"Even with heavy firepower, it should hold for a few minutes."
"Alright. Lock the door."
Wells did as he was told.
Xiao Ye immediately began to examine the wall in front of him.
