Chapter 324: Leave It to Me
Xiao Ye wasn't flustered. Instead, he asked, "Tell me, will I end up like the things in these jars?"
"Of course." The man in the white lab coat grew animated and began to speak at length. "Don't you find them beautiful?"
'He's calling those grotesque things beautiful?'
'This guy's really sick in the head.'
"I don't think they're beautiful."
These people could have never imagined that they would end up like this after death.
Not to mention the immense suffering they must have endured in the process.
If these test subjects were still alive, they would surely find their current forms hideously ugly and unacceptable!
The man in the white lab coat's eyes turned icy, but he quickly broke into a smile again. "You're just an ordinary person. It's normal for you not to understand."
"But you'll understand eventually. This is true beauty, not something so mundane."
Though they had only exchanged a few words, Xiao Ye could already see the fanaticism in the man's attitude and eyes.
'A man like this would never talk, even under torture, if he found out someone meant to harm his experiments.'
Xiao Ye knew full well that the most terrifying people weren't highly trained special operatives.
It was deranged fanatics like this—people who would give up everything, even their own lives, for their goals.
With this thought, Xiao Ye changed his plan. With a casual wave of his hand, the two burly men standing beside him simultaneously collapsed.
The man in the white lab coat was stunned. He immediately backed away, trying to leave the laboratory.
But Xiao Ye was a step ahead and blocked his path. "Dr. Wells."
"How do you know my name!"
While waiting for the vaccine to take effect, he had heard someone call out that name, and the man in the white lab coat had responded.
"I'm from Country A. You should be able to guess who I am."
"I came here specifically to find you and take you away."
Xiao Ye watched him with a composed expression. "Do you know why the vaccine had no effect on me?"
Wells's eyes darted back and forth before he suddenly exclaimed, "You're one of them! No wonder you didn't react to the vaccine!"
Clever people love to overthink. Xiao Ye had said that on purpose, hoping to mislead him into outsmarting himself.
And to his surprise, it had actually worked.
"You're right. We want to invite you to our laboratory to continue this experiment."
"No..." Wells was clearly hesitant. "I can't go."
"You're not safe here anymore. If I could find you, so can others."
"Besides, Country A has better laboratories. Do you really think you can reach your full potential here?"
Xiao Ye persuaded him in a low voice, "Do you think they sent you to Dragon Country because they value you? To protect you?"
"No, that's not it at all. It's just a way of holding you back. Do you think staying in the more technologically advanced Country A would have made you unsafe?"
"I refuse to believe a heavily guarded lab couldn't protect one person."
Xiao Ye had no idea why the man had really come to Dragon Country; he was just making up reasons as he went.
If he could get the man to cooperate, it would save him a great deal of trouble.
Although Xiao Ye was powerful, he still had to be fully prepared in a place teeming with guards and firearms.
Wells looked at Xiao Ye. "So what can you offer me?"
"Better conditions than you have here! Most importantly, we promise you an unlimited supply of test subjects."
"We've already prepared countless people. Country A has innumerable vagrants, unlike Dragon Country, which is so tightly controlled!"
Wells was instantly thrilled. "You're right! Whenever I want a new test subject here, they either make me wait or come up with excuses to delay."
"If I'd known Dragon Country was so strict, I never would have come!"
"I'll go with you. When do we leave?"
Xiao Ye's lips curved into a smile. "Right now. But Professor, I think you should get your research data first, shouldn't you?"
"We have some of it, of course, but I believe the data you've personally been tracking will be the most familiar. It'll make it easier for you to hit the ground running when you get to Country A."
"You're right. I'll go gather my things. But if I just leave like this, I'll definitely be assassinated!"
"Don't worry. They won't dare make a major move within Dragon Country's borders. I have people meeting me outside, and I had people on the inside. How else do you think I got in?"
Wells was completely reassured.
He was a brilliant biologist and an expert on this species modification experiment.
As such, he had a very high opinion of himself, believing that anyone who knew who he was would try to recruit him, not harm him.
Wells had Xiao Ye follow him to an office deeper inside the facility.
"This computer has all my research data."
Xiao Ye nodded and, without another word, took out a USB drive. "I'll handle it."
This USB drive was one of the most advanced on the market, equipped with anti-detection capabilities.
When he plugged it in, a window immediately popped up on the screen.
"Loading 1%..."
While it was loading, Wells led Xiao Ye to gather some other things.
"Professor Wells, you don't need to bring these material possessions. Once we're in Country A, someone will take care of everything for you."
"You just need to take the most important things with you."
Wells nodded and stopped insisting on packing his clothes.
He went back to his room and picked up a photograph.
"This is my wife and son. It's the only photograph I have of them. I have to take it."
Xiao Ye was a little surprised. 'A man so obsessed with his experiments actually has a wife and son?'
But he said nothing. Asking questions at a time like this would likely arouse Wells's suspicion.
"Alright, this is all I'm taking. If I didn't know it was impossible to move the test subjects, I'd really want to bring them all to Country A with me."
"I created them. They should be with me!"
Just then, the transfer to the USB drive finished.
Xiao Ye immediately unplugged it.
He and Professor Wells headed for the exit together.
Suddenly, red lights began to flash.
At the same time, a piercing alarm suddenly blared.
Wells's face fell. "Damn it, that's a level-one alert! It's the lab's highest security alarm! It must be because of your USB drive!"
A level-one alert would never be triggered for an ordinary accident.
Unless... there was a data breach!
Xiao Ye had no regrets. He would have done the same thing even if he knew he'd be discovered.
He had to get the experimental data. Only then would he know how far they had come and what kind of monsters they had created!
