Chapter 56: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 2: The Regional Stage
The next time the ball came to Kai's side, he was ready. It happened less than a minute later.
Miguel received the ball near the center circle and immediately drew two Maddela players toward him. Kai stayed wide. Noel watched him. For several seconds, neither moved. Then Miguel turned, his eyes met Kai's, and the pass came.
Kai took it cleanly. Noel started forward. This time Kai didn't slow down — he pushed the ball ahead and accelerated. Noel matched him, step for step, staying close enough to challenge.
Kai glanced toward the penalty area. Marco was moving between the center-backs, Tomas drifting toward the right side, Rafael still on the opposite flank. There was space. Not much. But enough.
Kai took another touch. Noel waited for the moment he'd try to cut inside — Kai knew he was waiting, so he didn't. He kept going. Noel's shoulders turned slightly toward the touchline. Kai suddenly stopped, the ball staying close to his boot. Noel stopped too. For a fraction of a second they stood almost motionless. Then Kai shifted his weight toward the outside — Noel reacted — and Kai immediately pulled the ball inside.
This time, he was past him.
The crowd reacted with a sharp burst of noise. Kai didn't celebrate — there was still a defender ahead. He pushed forward as the center-back stepped across. Kai looked toward Marco; the pass was there, but another Maddela midfielder was already moving into the lane. He changed his mind, carried the ball another step, and as the defender closed the gap, slipped it toward Tomas.
Tomas received it just outside the box. Marco called, "Turn!" He tried, but a defender was already on him — he couldn't, so he passed back. Miguel arrived. The attack slowed.
Kai jogged into the box, Noel recovering behind him. He glanced back — the defender had caught up, but this time Noel didn't look confident. Kai could see it. He'd beaten him once. That changed the matchup. Not completely. But enough.
---
"Good!" Coach Ramirez shouted from the sideline. Kai heard him but didn't look over.
Miguel switched the ball toward Rafael, who received with space as the Maddela defense shifted again. Rafael took a touch forward; a defender moved toward him. Rafael stopped, looked inside, then back outside. The defender waited.
Rafael smiled. "Come on."
The defender stepped closer. Rafael pushed the ball past him. The crowd reacted again — he was through. A second defender moved across; Rafael tried to cut inside, but the defender blocked him. The ball bounced loose. Tomas reached it first and passed toward Marco, who took one touch and shot — blocked. The rebound flew toward the edge of the box, and Leo Jr. arrived to strike it first time. Over the bar.
The San Isidro supporters groaned. Marco slapped his hands together. "Keep going!"
Kai looked around. The attack had lasted nearly a minute. They hadn't scored. But Maddela had been pushed backward. That mattered.
---
The goalkeeper placed the ball down for the restart. Kai walked back toward his position. Noel passed him — neither spoke, but Kai could feel the difference. Earlier, Noel had looked relaxed. Now his eyes stayed on Kai even while moving.
Kai almost smiled. *So you are worried.*
The ball was kicked long. Carlo challenged for it; the header went toward Miguel, but Ethan was already there. The Maddela captain won the second ball. Miguel stepped toward him immediately; Ethan shifted away, took one touch, then another — unhurried, with Miguel staying close.
Ethan looked right, then left, and finally passed forward. The Maddela striker dropped deep to receive. Carlo followed, which opened space behind him. Kai saw it.
"Carlo!"
The defender turned — too late. The striker had already passed the ball into the space. Maddela's winger sprinted toward it; Adrian moved across, but the winger reached it first and crossed. Nico cleared it before the striker could arrive. The ball rolled toward the sideline.
Kai tracked it. Maddela recovered. Another attack. Another warning.
He exhaled. They weren't going to let San Isidro control the match.
---
The next few minutes became a battle for possession — San Isidro would build, Maddela would press; Maddela would build, San Isidro would retreat. Neither team could hold the ball for long. Kai found himself running more than before, forward and back, always having to be ready to sprint again. His legs were beginning to feel the match. Not tired. Not yet. But warm. Heavy. Real.
He wiped his forehead with the back of his wrist. The morning heat had grown stronger, and the crowd was louder too — every successful challenge brought another wave of noise.
Then Rafael shouted from the opposite side. "Kai!"
Kai turned. Rafael pointed toward the space behind Noel — the defender had stepped forward, just slightly, but the space was there. Kai understood immediately and started running.
Rafael received the ball. Noel saw Kai and turned — too late. Rafael lifted his head and the pass came. Kai sprinted behind the defensive line; the ball dropped into the grass and he reached it before it went out. For a moment the field opened in front of him. He was inside the final third.
The crowd rose. Kai took another touch as a defender ran across. Marco was inside the box, Tomas arriving. Kai looked toward Marco, who raised his hand. "Here!"
Kai shaped his body for the cross. The defender committed — Kai didn't cross. He cut the ball backward, the defender nearly losing his balance, then recovered and crossed low. The ball traveled across the face of goal. Marco slid, his boot missing by inches. It continued toward the far side, where Rafael was arriving and struck it first time. A Maddela defender threw himself in front of it. Blocked. Corner.
Rafael dropped his head. "How?"
Marco stood up laughing. "You missed."
"I didn't miss."
"You did."
"The defender blocked it."
"Still didn't score."
Rafael pointed at him. "You're lucky you're our striker."
Marco grinned. Kai jogged over. "Both of you are wasting energy."
"You sound like Miguel," Rafael said.
Kai shrugged. "That's because he's usually right."
From several meters away, Miguel shouted, "I heard that." They laughed. For a moment, the pressure disappeared.
Then the referee pointed toward the corner flag. Back to work.
---
Tomas walked over to take the corner. Marco stood near the penalty spot, Carlo moved toward the far post, Nico stayed outside the box, Kai remained near the edge. Tomas raised his hand — the signal.
Kai watched the defenders. Ethan was organizing them — one marked Marco, another stayed near Carlo. Noel stood closer to Kai. Again. Always Noel.
The corner came in. Marco jumped and got there — header, but it bounced off a defender and fell toward Kai. He moved forward and struck it; the shot was blocked by another player, rolling back to Tomas. Tomas crossed again — this time the goalkeeper came out and caught it, landing heavily but holding on.
"Push!" he shouted. Maddela immediately moved forward.
Kai turned. The counterattack had already started. He sprinted back.
---
The goalkeeper threw the ball toward Ethan, who controlled it without breaking stride. Miguel chased; Ethan passed. Maddela's right winger was already running, Noel moving forward behind him.
Kai saw the sequence developing — he was supposed to track Noel, but the winger had the ball. He had to choose. He followed the winger. Adrian stepped toward the ball; the winger cut inside, Adrian staying with him. Kai recovered toward the middle. The winger passed; Ethan received again, Miguel closing, and Ethan played the ball behind him. The Maddela striker had dropped deep. He turned. Shot. Carlo blocked it, the ball bouncing away — Kai reached it first and cleared toward the sideline.
The crowd applauded. Kai took a second to breathe. Then he heard Coach Ramirez. "Good decision!"
He looked toward him. Ramirez pointed toward the field. "Again!"
Kai nodded. No celebration, no wasted movement. The match continued, and with every passing minute he was beginning to understand something: the regional stage wasn't about who had the best player. It was about which team could keep making the right decision when the game stopped going their way.
---
The ball went out for a throw-in. Kai jogged toward the touchline, breathing harder than he had a few minutes earlier. The sun had climbed higher; the dampness on the grass was almost gone now, replaced by dry heat rising off the pitch. Sweat had started collecting along his hairline, his shirt already sticking slightly to his back.
He glanced toward the scoreboard. 0–0. Around thirty minutes. Still nothing separating them. But the match no longer felt like the cautious game they'd started. Maddela had learned their movements. San Isidro had learned theirs. Now every small opening had to be earned.
Kai wiped his forehead. Noel stood a few steps away, not smiling anymore. Neither was Kai.
The throw-in came. Jared took it quickly toward Miguel, and Maddela tightened around him immediately. Miguel's first touch took the ball slightly away from pressure, but Ethan was already closing from behind.
"Man on!"
Miguel heard the warning. He didn't turn — instead he played the ball first time toward Leo Jr., who returned it. Miguel took one touch, two, then switched the ball toward Kai.
Kai stepped forward to meet it. Noel was there. Again.
Kai's mouth twitched. "You really like me."
Noel's eyes stayed on the ball. "Not enough to let you through."
Kai took the touch. The defender moved. Kai pushed the ball toward the line; Noel followed. Kai cut inside; Noel stayed with him. For half a second Kai considered trying something — a step-over, a sudden burst, anything. Then he noticed a second Maddela defender closing behind Noel. Two against one. Not the time.
Kai stopped and turned the ball back toward Miguel.
"Good," Miguel called.
Kai jogged away. He didn't feel frustrated. That was new. A few weeks ago he might have tried to force the play just because he had the ball. Now he was beginning to understand something Coach Ramirez had been trying to teach him — being dangerous didn't always mean attacking. Sometimes it meant making the defense move.
---
Maddela recovered possession soon after. Their captain dropped toward the center-backs to receive; Miguel followed. Ethan looked over his shoulder, once, twice, then played the ball wide. Their left winger collected it near the sideline, and Rafael stepped across immediately.
The winger tried to push forward. Rafael matched him. The player stopped. Rafael stopped too. The winger smiled; Rafael smiled back. "You're not getting through."
The winger shrugged. "Neither are you." He passed backward.
Rafael laughed under his breath. "Fair enough."
Maddela recycled the ball. Kai watched from the opposite side. The game had become strange in a way he couldn't quite explain — no anger, no reckless tackling, no shouting between players. Just constant pressure. A question. An answer. Another question. Every possession felt like a conversation, and the better team would be the one that eventually ran out of answers.
---
Maddela moved forward again. Ethan carried the ball through the middle; Miguel stepped toward him. Ethan slowed. Kai saw the movement immediately — the Maddela captain wanted Miguel to commit. He wasn't going to. Miguel stayed balanced, and Ethan eventually passed to a midfielder on his right. Leo Jr. moved across; the midfielder passed again. Maddela were patient. Too patient, perhaps.
Kai watched their shape. Their full-backs were beginning to push higher, their midfielders spreading wider. There was space — not much, but it was there. Kai glanced toward Miguel. Miguel looked back. They both saw it. The problem was getting the ball there.
---
Maddela's attack finally broke down when Nico stepped in front of a pass intended for their striker and controlled it with his thigh. "Leo!"
The ball went to Leo Jr., who turned. Miguel was already moving — one pass, then another. San Isidro were out. Kai accelerated down the right, Rafael on the opposite side, Marco moving between the center-backs, Tomas following. For a moment, it looked like the counterattack was forming.
Miguel carried the ball toward the center circle. A Maddela midfielder sprinted toward him; Miguel looked right — Kai was open. The pass came. Kai took it in stride, Noel turning immediately.
Kai pushed the ball forward — one touch, two — the defender running beside him. Kai felt his legs burning. He could beat him. Maybe. But another defender was moving across. Kai slowed. Noel expected the cut inside; Kai went outside instead, gaining half a step.
The crowd reacted. Kai lifted his head — Marco was inside, Tomas arriving near the top of the box. A cross was possible. He swung his foot; the ball curled toward the penalty area. Marco jumped, a Maddela center-back jumping with him — the defender reached it first, the ball headed away, straight toward the edge of the box. Tomas rushed forward and struck it. The shot took a deflection. Corner.
Kai exhaled. Rafael jogged toward him. "Better."
"Better?"
"Yeah."
"That's all?"
Rafael shrugged. "You want me to write you a poem?"
Kai laughed. "Just checking."
---
The corner was taken by Tomas, placed carefully. Marco stood near the penalty spot, Carlo and Nico moved into the box, Kai stayed outside. Miguel looked toward him; Kai nodded.
The corner came in. The Maddela goalkeeper punched it. The ball flew toward Kai — he controlled it with his chest as a defender rushed out. He took one touch backward, then another, and didn't force the shot — instead he passed to Miguel, who immediately switched it back toward Rafael. Rafael crossed. This time the goalkeeper caught it, holding the ball against his chest.
The Maddela players began moving forward. Kai jogged backward. No goal. But the attack had lasted longer than most of their earlier ones. They were keeping Maddela under pressure. That mattered.
---
The goalkeeper released the ball. Maddela pushed forward, their right winger sprinting down the flank. Adrian moved toward him; the winger slowed. Adrian didn't dive in — he waited. The winger tried to cut inside; Adrian stepped across, and the ball touched his foot and rolled away.
"Jared!"
Jared collected it and immediately found Miguel. Maddela pressed. Miguel turned away from one player and passed to Leo Jr., who returned it. Miguel looked forward — Kai had already started moving. The ball went to him.
Noel was waiting. Kai stopped. Noel stopped. Kai stepped forward. Noel stepped forward.
Kai laughed quietly. "You never get bored?"
"No."
"Seriously?"
"No."
Kai shook his head. "You're strange."
Noel finally smiled. "So are you."
Kai didn't have an answer for that. The ball arrived; he controlled it, then played it backward. Noel nodded once. He understood — Kai wasn't going to give him the battle he wanted every time.
---
Minutes passed. The scoreboard moved toward thirty-five. The crowd had grown louder, some supporters beginning to chant, the sound rolling across the grounds and mixing with whistles from other pitches. Kai could hear Rafael calling for the ball, Marco shouting for space, Miguel directing Leo Jr., Enzo's voice carrying from behind them — "Line!" "Step!" "Right!"
The game had become noisy. Yet somehow Kai felt calmer inside it. He knew where his teammates were now. He knew what Miguel wanted before the pass came. He knew when Rafael was about to cut inside. He knew Marco would make the near-post run even when he didn't call for it. They weren't perfect. But they were beginning to move like a team that had played together far longer than they actually had.
---
Then Maddela found the opening. It started simply. Ethan received the ball near midfield; Miguel stepped toward him. The captain turned away — instead of passing forward, he played it back. Miguel relaxed for half a second.
That was the mistake.
Ethan immediately received the return pass. Miguel had been pulled forward, and the space behind him opened. A Maddela midfielder ran into it. Tomas tried to cover — too late. The ball went through.
Kai saw it from the right. "Middle!" His voice came out louder than he expected.
Maddela's striker received. Carlo stepped up; the striker shielded the ball. Nico moved closer. The striker laid it off — Ethan was there. He struck the ball first time, low, hard, toward the bottom corner.
Enzo moved. His fingertips reached it, changing its direction slightly. The ball struck the outside of the post.
*CLANG.*
The sound carried across the pitch. Everyone froze. Then the ball rolled out.
Kai exhaled sharply. Enzo stayed on the ground a second before pushing himself up. Carlo walked toward him. "Good save."
Enzo shook his head. "Post saved me."
Nico laughed nervously. "Still counts."
Enzo looked toward the midfield. "Wake up." His voice wasn't loud. But everyone heard it.
Kai looked at Miguel. Miguel was already looking at him. They both understood. That had been the warning. A real one.
---
Coach Ramirez stepped toward the sideline. "Calm! Don't chase!"
San Isidro reset. Kai took his position again, breathing heavier now, legs feeling different. The match had reached the point where the half started becoming a physical test.
He looked toward Noel. The defender was breathing hard too — for the first time, Kai noticed sweat running down the side of his face. Noel caught him looking.
"Tired?"
Kai smiled. "You?"
"No."
"You're lying."
Noel laughed. "Maybe."
The referee called for play to continue. Kai turned away. Thirty-seven minutes. Still 0–0. But the game was changing, and both teams knew it.
---
San Isidro regained the ball. Miguel received near the center circle. This time Ethan didn't step forward — he stayed deeper. Miguel noticed. Kai noticed too. The Maddela captain had changed his position. He wasn't trying to win the ball anymore. He was protecting the space.
Kai looked toward Rafael, wide; Tomas, between the lines; Marco, already moving. He started running. Noel followed. Then Kai stopped. Noel stopped. Kai moved inside; Noel followed. Kai suddenly turned back outside — Noel took a step in the wrong direction. Only one. But it was enough.
Miguel saw it. The pass came immediately. Kai received it behind the defender.
For the first time all match, Noel was behind him.
Kai's heart jumped. He pushed the ball forward as the nearest center-back stepped across. He looked up — Marco was calling. "Now!"
He could cross. He could shoot. He could pass. Three options. For one moment, everything seemed to slow. Then Kai chose — he slipped the ball toward Marco.
Marco reached it first. One touch. Shot. The Maddela goalkeeper reacted quickly. Save. The ball bounced loose; Tomas rushed toward it, but a defender cleared. The crowd erupted anyway.
Kai stood near the edge of the box, hands on his hips. Marco looked toward him. "Good ball."
"You almost scored."
Marco grinned. "Almost doesn't count."
Rafael ran past them. "Finally, someone learned."
Kai laughed.
---
The referee checked his watch. The first half was approaching its final minutes. Neither team had found the breakthrough. But San Isidro had discovered something important — Noel could be moved, Maddela could be pulled apart, and Kai didn't need to win every duel to affect the game.
He looked across the pitch. Ethan was talking to his defenders. Noel pointed toward Kai. The captain nodded. They had noticed too.
Kai wiped his forehead. So had they. The next few minutes wouldn't be about who had more talent. It would be about who could stay composed longer.
Kai took his position. The referee blew the whistle. Play resumed. And this time, Kai didn't look at the scoreboard.
He looked at the space behind Noel.
There was still time.
