The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 55: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 2: The Regional Stage

The whistle sounded. For half a second, nobody moved. Then Maddela touched the ball backward.

The regional tournament had officially begun for San Isidro.

Kai took his first steps forward, keeping his eyes on the ball while his body stayed loose. The morning heat was already settling over the pitch, and the grass felt slightly damp beneath his boots.

Across from him, Noel was watching. Not the ball. Him.

Kai noticed. So that's how you're going to play me. He didn't rush.

Maddela moved the ball across their back line, one pass at a time. Their defenders weren't afraid to keep possession — they didn't simply kick the ball forward whenever San Isidro pressed. That alone told Kai something. They were comfortable. Maybe too comfortable.

Miguel moved up a few steps. "Stay compact!"

Kai adjusted his position. Maddela's left-back received the ball and looked forward; Rafael stepped toward him immediately. The defender passed inside — Miguel closed the lane. A second pass went toward Ethan, Miguel already there. Ethan took one touch, then another, waiting until Miguel came close before sending the ball toward the right.

Kai followed the movement. Maddela were trying to pull them apart. He could feel it — they weren't attacking yet, they were testing, seeing who would move first.

Kai stayed where he was. Noel glanced at him. For some reason, that small look made Kai smile. The defender noticed; his expression didn't change. Then Maddela switched the ball to the opposite side.

---

The first few minutes were cautious. Not boring — just careful. Both teams seemed to be measuring each other.

San Isidro had their first real chance to move forward when Nico intercepted a pass near midfield and immediately found Miguel. Miguel turned under pressure — a Maddela midfielder was already closing.

"Back!"

Miguel played it to Leo Jr., who returned the ball. Miguel looked up. Kai was wide, Rafael pushing forward on the other side, Marco between the two center-backs. For a moment there was space. Miguel sent the ball toward Kai.

Kai took his first touch near the sideline. Noel was already coming. Kai slowed; the defender slowed with him. Kai pushed the ball forward; Noel matched the movement. Kai stopped again. Noel stopped.

A small laugh escaped Kai. "You really don't want to leave me."

Noel gave him a faint smile. "Not yet." Then he stepped closer.

Kai moved the ball inside before the defender could challenge. Miguel received it, and the attack continued. Kai jogged forward, glancing over his shoulder. Noel was following.

*Not yet.* Kai remembered the words. *Interesting.*

---

Miguel carried the ball toward the middle. Tomas dropped slightly to receive, Marco began moving toward the near post, Rafael stayed wide on the left. Maddela's defense shifted.

Tomas received, took one touch, two — a defender stepped toward him, and he immediately passed to Rafael. Rafael took the ball and attacked the space. The crowd reacted. He pushed past the first defender; a second one came across. Rafael cut inside as Marco called for the ball.

"Here!"

Rafael looked up and the pass came low. Marco stretched — a Maddela defender got there first. The ball bounced away. Kai moved toward it, but a midfielder reached it before him. Maddela cleared.

Rafael jogged back. "That was close."

Marco shook his head. "I had it."

"You didn't."

"I would've."

"You didn't."

Kai laughed. Marco looked at him. "Don't encourage him."

"I'm not."

"You are."

Kai raised both hands. "Okay."

---

Maddela responded quickly. Their goalkeeper played short, the center-back moved forward. San Isidro didn't press aggressively — Coach Ramirez had told them to remain patient.

Maddela passed through midfield. Ethan dropped deeper; Miguel followed him a few steps, then stopped. Ethan noticed and carried the ball forward. Kai watched from the right. The Maddela captain wasn't fast, but every time someone moved toward him, he seemed to know where the next pass would be.

Ethan shifted the ball toward their winger, who received and immediately attacked the space behind Adrian. Adrian turned; the winger crossed. Carlo stepped in front of the striker — the ball hit his shoulder and bounced away. Nico cleared it.

"Good!"

San Isidro's bench applauded. Kai exhaled. That was their first warning. Maddela weren't going to wait forever.

---

The match settled again. Kai stayed wide, Noel stayed close — it was almost funny. Every time Kai moved, Noel adjusted. Kai drifted toward the center; Noel followed. Kai went back toward the line; Noel followed again. Eventually Kai stopped and looked at him.

"You've been doing that the whole time."

Noel shrugged. "It's my job."

"Don't you get tired?"

"Do you?"

Kai smiled. "Fair."

The ball came toward Kai. He controlled it; Noel stepped closer immediately. This time Kai didn't try to beat him — he passed backward to Jared, who moved it to Miguel. Miguel switched play. Rafael received on the other side, and Kai began running.

Noel looked between him and the ball — for the first time, the defender hesitated. Just for a moment. Kai noticed. There. He kept running.

Rafael saw the movement, but instead of passing immediately he held the ball. The Maddela midfielder closed him down; Rafael turned, and the chance disappeared.

Kai slowed. Rafael looked at him. "Sorry."

Kai shook his head. "Next one." He didn't mean it as encouragement. He meant it — there would be another.

---

The clock moved past ten minutes. Still 0–0. The crowd had become louder — not because anything dramatic had happened, but because both teams were starting to settle. Every tackle drew a reaction, every successful pass a little applause, every mistake a groan from the supporters.

Kai could hear his own breathing now. He hadn't realized how tense he'd been. He loosened his shoulders. It's just football. But that wasn't completely true anymore. It was football at a higher level — players punished small mistakes, defenders didn't panic, midfielders scanned before receiving, even the forwards were constantly moving.

Kai liked it. He wanted more.

---

Maddela built another attack. Ethan received near the halfway line; Miguel stepped forward. Ethan looked left, then right, then passed to the right side, where Noel's teammate received.

Kai started tracking back. The winger tried to move forward; Kai stayed with him. The player suddenly stopped and passed inside — Kai almost missed it. The ball went straight toward Ethan. Miguel intercepted. For one second the field opened.

"Go!"

Miguel carried the ball forward. Kai sprinted immediately, Rafael doing the same, Marco moving between the center-backs, Tomas following. Four San Isidro players attacked; Maddela's defense retreated.

Miguel looked toward Kai and the pass came. Kai received near the right side, Noel recovering. He took one touch forward — the defender closed. Kai looked inside: Marco covered, Tomas behind him, Rafael arriving on the far side. He slowed, then passed back to Miguel.

The attack didn't produce a shot. But something had changed — Noel had been forced to turn. Kai noticed that. He wasn't trying to beat the defender anymore. He was trying to make him react. That was different. And it felt better.

---

Coach Ramirez stood near the sideline. He hadn't said much, but when Kai glanced toward him, the coach gave a small nod. Kai looked away. He didn't need more.

Across the pitch, Ethan was talking to his teammates, pointing toward Kai. Noel looked over. Kai noticed. The two exchanged another glance — this time, Noel didn't smile. Neither did Kai. The match was becoming a conversation, and neither of them wanted to be the one who spoke first.

The clock continued moving. 12 minutes. 13. 14. San Isidro were beginning to understand Maddela. But Maddela were beginning to understand them too.

The next few minutes became more physical — not dirty, just harder. Maddela had stopped giving San Isidro easy passes. Whenever Miguel received the ball, someone was already nearby. Whenever Tomas tried to turn, a defender closed the space. Even Marco was being pushed farther from the penalty area.

Kai noticed it first when he received another pass near the touchline. Noel was waiting, but this time there was another Maddela player a few meters behind him. Two defenders.

Kai slowed. They've adjusted already. Noel gestured slightly toward his teammate. Kai understood — they wanted him to try the dribble. They were ready for it. So Kai passed backward.

Jared received it. The Maddela winger immediately moved toward him, and Jared returned the ball to Kai — the same two defenders still there. Kai glanced toward Miguel, who was pointing toward the middle. Kai played it inside. Miguel took the pass under pressure and managed to turn. For a moment, the midfield opened.

"Rafael!"

Miguel switched the ball left. Rafael received with room, took one touch forward, then another — this time nobody immediately stepped out. Rafael accelerated. The crowd responded. A defender finally moved toward him; Rafael cut inside. Tomas was running alongside Marco, and the defenders had to choose.

Rafael waited, then slipped the ball toward Tomas, who reached it near the edge of the box. He looked toward Marco — a defender was already between them. Tomas didn't force it. He returned the ball to Miguel.

The attack slowed again. But San Isidro had achieved something important: they had moved Maddela, and for the first time their shape wasn't as comfortable as it had been.

Miguel looked toward Kai. Kai understood. Keep moving them.

---

Maddela's response was immediate. Ethan dropped deeper to receive the ball; Miguel followed him. The Maddela captain glanced over his shoulder, then passed forward.

Kai watched the movement — a midfielder had moved into the space Miguel had just left. Tomas tried to cover. Too late. Maddela played through the middle. Their striker received with his back to goal; Carlo stepped forward, but the striker held him off. Nico moved closer, and the ball was laid off.

Ethan was already running. Miguel turned and chased, but the pass came into Ethan's path and he entered the final third. Kai stopped watching Noel — his attention shifted to the middle.

Ethan carried the ball a few more meters, then suddenly sent it left. Maddela's winger was free. Adrian rushed across; the winger tried to cross, Adrian blocked it, the ball bounced back to the winger — he tried again, and this time it went in.

Carlo jumped. The striker got there first. Header. Enzo moved — the ball went wide. A collective sigh came from the San Isidro supporters.

Enzo pointed toward Carlo. "Stay closer!" Carlo nodded; he didn't argue. He knew.

Kai looked toward Coach Ramirez, already turned toward the defenders. "Reset!" His voice cut through the noise. San Isidro moved back into shape.

---

Kai took a deep breath. That chance had been too close. Maddela weren't just waiting for mistakes — they could create them.

He looked at Noel again. The right-back was standing near the halfway line. Kai noticed his body position — one foot slightly forward, shoulders turned toward the inside. He wasn't facing Kai directly. He was protecting the space behind him.

Kai stared for another second. Then something clicked. Noel wasn't afraid of his speed. He was afraid of Kai getting behind him. That meant if Kai kept running straight at him, the defender would always have an advantage. Kai needed to make him believe the run was coming — then change direction.

He waited.

---

The next time Miguel received the ball, Kai moved closer to the center. Noel followed. Kai stopped, then drifted back outside. Noel followed again.

Kai smiled to himself. There you go.

Miguel looked toward him. Kai didn't call for the ball — he didn't need to. Miguel understood. The midfielder held possession another second, then passed toward Rafael. Rafael controlled it.

Kai suddenly sprinted. Noel reacted — but Kai didn't run behind him. He cut toward the center instead. Noel hesitated. That tiny hesitation was enough. Rafael played the ball into the space, and Kai reached it first. He had beaten the defender without actually dribbling past him.

The crowd reacted. Kai took another touch as a Maddela center-back stepped forward. Marco moved between two defenders; Tomas appeared near the top of the box. Kai had options. He looked toward Marco — the pass was possible, but the center-back had already noticed. Kai changed his mind and played it to Tomas.

Tomas took the ball and shot immediately. The attempt was low; the goalkeeper dropped. Save. The ball bounced loose. Marco rushed toward it, but a defender cleared before he could reach it. Corner.

Rafael jogged toward Kai. "That was different."

"What?"

"You didn't even try to dribble."

Kai shrugged. "Didn't need to."

Rafael smiled. "Look at you."

Kai laughed. "Don't make it weird."

---

The corner was taken short. Tomas played it to Miguel, who returned it. Tomas crossed this time, the ball curling toward the penalty area. Marco rose and managed to get a head to it — the header lacked power, straight at the goalkeeper. The Maddela keeper caught it and immediately shouted for his teammates to push forward.

San Isidro retreated. Kai jogged back, heart beating faster. They were getting closer. Not much. But enough.

---

Maddela's goalkeeper threw the ball toward their right side. Their winger controlled it; Adrian stepped forward. The winger tried to pass inside — Adrian read it. Interception. He sent the ball toward Leo Jr., who turned and found Miguel.

Miguel looked up. This time, Kai was already moving. The pass came; Kai received near the touchline, Noel waiting. Kai didn't stop — he pushed the ball forward and sprinted. Noel ran with him.

Kai looked inside — the center-back was moving across. That was what he wanted. Kai slowed suddenly; Noel slowed. Kai stepped toward the outside; Noel shifted. Kai pulled the ball inside; Noel reacted. Kai immediately passed toward Tomas, who returned it first time. Kai was moving again — the give-and-go had opened a small gap.

Kai pushed through. Noel recovered quickly, coming alongside him — the two were almost shoulder to shoulder. Kai tried to protect the ball; Noel stretched his leg. Kai touched it forward; Noel got a foot to it. The ball rolled toward the corner.

Kai chased. Noel chased. Both reached it almost together. Kai managed to keep it in and turned — Noel stood between him and the goal. Kai looked up. No teammate was immediately open, so he played the safest option: back to Miguel.

The crowd gave a small applause. Nothing spectacular. Just good football.

Miguel received. "Good."

Kai nodded. He was starting to understand — sometimes the right decision wasn't the one that looked impressive. It was the one that kept the attack alive.

---

The clock reached twenty minutes. The game was still scoreless, but neither team looked comfortable anymore. Maddela's players were talking more. San Isidro were doing the same. The midfield battle had become the center of everything — Miguel and Ethan kept finding each other, one moving, the other following, then the ball going somewhere else.

Kai watched them from the wing. It reminded him of a chess match. Except the pieces were sweating. And sometimes they kicked each other.

Rafael appeared beside him during a stoppage. "You okay?"

Kai nodded. "Yeah."

"You've been quiet."

"I'm thinking."

Rafael grinned. "That's dangerous."

"You're one to talk."

"I don't think."

"Exactly."

Rafael laughed. The referee called them back. "Let's go!" They returned to position.

---

Maddela had another chance shortly afterward. Ethan received the ball and drew Miguel toward him. Instead of passing immediately, he waited — the midfielder behind Miguel moved into the open space. Ethan released the ball, one touch, then another. Maddela were through the center.

Tomas tried to recover; Leo Jr. moved across. The ball reached their striker. Carlo stepped forward; the striker turned and shot. Enzo got down quickly, gloves catching the ball against the grass. He held it. For a second, the entire stadium seemed to exhale.

Enzo stood, looked toward Carlo, then Nico. "Talk!"

Carlo nodded. Nico raised a hand. "Got it."

Kai watched them. Enzo wasn't shouting because he was angry — he was organizing them. The goalkeeper was already becoming a voice at the back. Kai liked that. They needed everyone, not just the players scoring goals.

---

The next attack belonged to San Isidro. Enzo rolled the ball to Nico, who passed to Adrian, who found Leo Jr. Leo Jr. turned and played forward. Miguel received and looked toward Kai.

This time, Kai didn't wait — he started his run. Noel moved with him. Miguel passed; Kai took the ball in stride, the touch slightly heavy. Noel closed immediately. Kai recovered — instead of going outside, he cut inside. Noel followed. Kai pushed the ball toward Tomas, who controlled it.

Marco made a run. Tomas passed; Marco reached the edge of the box, one defender following him, another moving toward Rafael. The middle opened. Marco shot — blocked. The rebound bounced toward Kai, who arrived first and struck it. The shot flew through a crowd of legs; the goalkeeper saw it late but managed to get down. Save.

Kai stood still for a second, the crowd reacting behind the goal. Rafael ran over. "That was going in."

Kai looked toward the goalkeeper. "Almost."

Rafael groaned. "Not that word again."

Kai laughed.

---

The match continued. Twenty-five minutes. Then twenty-six. Neither side had scored, but the feeling around the pitch had changed. The players weren't testing each other anymore — they were competing. Every tackle carried more weight. Every pass was made with purpose.

Kai glanced toward the scoreboard. 0–0. He wasn't disappointed. Not yet. They were finding ways through — they just hadn't found the final touch.

Then he saw something. Noel had started standing a little farther away. Not much — maybe a meter. But it was enough.

Kai narrowed his eyes. The defender was tired. So was he. That was the part nobody talked about — speed didn't disappear when you got tired. Decision-making did.

Kai took a slow breath. He looked toward Miguel, then Rafael. He didn't say anything. He didn't have to. They had begun to understand each other.

And the next time the ball came to Kai's side, he was going to test that extra meter.
