Chapter 66: Rescue
"Silver Needles?" Jiang Yao grew even more confused.
"My mom and grandpa were on the brink of death. Chen Dong used the Silver Needles to sustain them."
"Then where are the Silver Needles now?" Jiang Yao asked urgently.
"Dr. Zhong pulled them out!"
Jiang Yao frowned at Li Huiran. "Then where is this Chen Dong you mentioned? He's probably the only one who can save them now."
"He should be here in two or three minutes."
Li Huiran was beside herself with anxiety, wondering if her grandfather and mother could hold on for another two or three minutes.
"Do you remember where the Silver Needles were placed?" Jiang Yao asked again.
Li Huiran shook her head, tears of guilt in her eyes.
Jiang Yao's expression turned grave. "Two or three minutes? Maybe I can buy some time." With that, Jiang Yao walked into the intensive care unit.
Dr. Zhong, still in the middle of the resuscitation effort, was startled when he saw Jiang Yao walk in.
'He hadn't expected the family outside to actually get Dr. Jiang.'
'But what difference could she make? Their injuries were too severe. The resuscitation effort now was just a formality.'
'If it weren't for professional ethics, he would have already gone out and told the family to give up. This whole resuscitation was a complete waste of time.'
'They're goners. They're just goners. It wouldn't matter even if Dr. Jiang was here!'
'He knew someone with her skill would see the situation was hopeless at a glance, so why was she even bothering to come in?'
"Can you put the Silver Needles you removed back in their original positions?" Jiang Yao asked.
Hearing this, Dr. Zhong instantly bristled.
'Silver Needles, Silver Needles… what the hell good could a few needles possibly do?'
"The Li Family must have brought you in, right? Don't tell me the great Dr. Jiang actually believes in the tricks of these charlatans?"
Jiang Yao frowned. "Don't make baseless pronouncements when you lack the skill to understand!"
Dr. Zhong shot Jiang Yao a resentful glare.
'He'd never liked Jiang Yao, and now she was here lecturing him. Sooner or later, he'd put her in her place.'
He snorted. "Right. You're the great Dr. Jiang, your skills are superb and mine are lacking. These people are clearly beyond saving, but you just had to stick your nose in. Fine! I quit! You save them!" With that, he stripped off his gloves and stormed out of the ICU.
Jiang Yao quickly took Dr. Zhong's place.
Now, to keep the two of them alive, Jiang Yao had no choice but to use every technique she knew, applying special methods to stimulate their organs and desperately trying to stabilize their vital signs.
Dr. Zhong watched from the doorway for a moment and laughed inwardly. 'With methods like these, I'll have the perfect reason to report her later.' He then left, a smug look on his face.
As time went on, the patients' vital signs grew fainter.
Jiang Yao had run out of options. 'Hold on!' she prayed silently.
Outside the ICU, Li Jianwen kept wringing his hands, pacing back and forth.
The phone in Li Huiran's hands had cracked under her grip.
But their collective anxiety was useless.
With a long, piercing BEEP from the heart monitor, their vital signs vanished. The ECG flatlined.
In a panic, Jiang Yao grabbed the defibrillator paddles.
Once, twice…
Then, she shook her head helplessly.
Tears filling his eyes, Li Jianwen slammed his fist into the wall.
Li Huiran broke into silent tears.
Just then, a figure flashed into view.
"I'm here!"
Chen Dong's voice rang out, and he was already inside the ICU.
The Li father and daughter shot to their feet, their eyes fixed on him.
They watched as hundreds of Silver Needles materialized, hovering in the air around Chen Dong.
Methodically, one by one, the needles buried themselves into the major acupoints on both patients' bodies.
Jiang Yao watched, stunned. 'So, it's him.'
When the Silver Needles covering the two bodies, like a field of stars, suddenly pulsed with light in unison.
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...
The heart monitor began to show a waveform again. Their heart rates and blood pressure started to climb steadily.
Chen Dong didn't stop. He continued his work in a flurry of motion—plucking out needles, driving new ones in.
Each needle was suffused with a specific type of True Qi, and the force and depth of each insertion varied.
'Jiang Yao had never imagined it was possible to save someone's life like this.'
After an hour of treatment, Chen Dong finally stopped. He took a deep breath, and with a wave of his hand, all the Silver Needles flew back into his grasp.
The Li father and daughter let out a collective sigh of relief.
For the first time, Li Jianwen felt that this kid, Chen Dong, was actually quite remarkable.
Seeing that the treatment was over, Jiang Yao stepped forward. "We've met once before. I wonder if Dr. Chen remembers?"
Chen Dong smiled. "Of course I remember. Thank you, Dr. Jiang, for buying them time."
"My own skills weren't enough. I nearly cost them their lives," Jiang Yao said, her voice tinged with guilt. She continued, "I've recently developed a great interest in traditional Chinese medicine. When you have time, would I be able to ask for your guidance, Dr. Chen?"
Chen Dong nodded in agreement.
He walked out of the ICU and addressed the Li father and daughter. "Your grandfather and Aunt Xia are no longer in mortal danger, but they will still need some time to recover."
Li Jianwen's face creased into a wide smile. "Xiaodong, once they're out of the hospital, I owe you a good drink."
Li Huiran, smiling through her tears, said, "You performed pretty well this time. I'll make sure you get a bonus."
At the mention of money, Chen Dong's eyes lit up.
"This matter might not be over yet. The people who attacked the manor were sent by the Sun Family. To prevent future problems, I need to pay the Sun Family a visit. You two stay here and look after your grandfather and Aunt Xia."
Upon hearing this, Li Jianwen quickly interjected, "The Sun Family is not to be underestimated, Xiaodong. Don't be reckless."
Chen Dong just smiled. "They're just a bit of a nuisance, that's all."
「As dusk fell over Jiangzhou, a torrential rain began to fall, accompanied by flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder.」
Inside the study of the Sun Family Manor, Sun Yuanliang was restless.
