The voice suddenly stopped.
Ni Mengxue looked up.
The woman in front of her was staring at her strangely.
She had beautiful, bright red hair, pale skin, and freckles stretching across both cheeks. Her amber eyes were striking, and her ruddy lips made her look almost like a living doll.
Unfortunately, her expression ruined the image. She looked irritated and arrogant.
Ni Mengxue sighed. "It’s all right."
She turned around and started walking away.
The woman immediately became furious. "You didn’t apologize!"
Ni Mengxue waved her hand without looking back. "I forgive you."
The red-haired woman froze.
She pointed at Ni Mengxue in disbelief and was about to follow her when her husband gently patted her shoulder.
"It’s all right, wife. Let her go. From her clothes, it’s clear that we can’t afford to offend her."
The red-haired woman became even more furious.
She turned around and slapped him across the face.
The sharp sound of the slap made Ni Mengxue pause. She turned around and stared.
The red-haired woman was shouting at her husband.
"You bastard! Did I ask for your opinion? You’re a househusband, so act like one!"
Ni Mengxue was stunned.
’Wow. I’ve seen women being abused by men. Now I’m seeing a man being abused by a woman.’
She shook her head.
’Great. It seems the interstellar era and this world have quite a few things in common.’
Without getting involved, Ni Mengxue turned around and continued toward the laboratory.
Michael lowered his gaze to the pavement beneath his feet.
It was the same pavement where Ruby, his current wife, had once chased after him.
They were standing outside the hotel, and after what had just happened, everything felt strangely familiar.
Michael slowly lifted his gaze toward the beautiful red-haired woman in front of him.
Then, unexpectedly, he started laughing.
Ruby frowned, her hand subconsciously reaching out to hold him. "Why are you laughing?"
Michael simply found the entire situation absurd, and he dodged her hand. He didn’t answer and turned around to leave.
Ruby immediately shouted after him.
"Michael! Where are you going? Just because I slapped you once? Since when did you become so fragile? I’m talking to you!"
Michael ignored her and continued walking.
As he passed Ni Mengxue, he heard her casually say, "Divorce her as quickly as possible."
Michael paused for a moment. Then he gave a faint nod and continued walking.
When he returned to his room, he immediately began packing his belongings.
Once upon a time, Ruby had been an orphan with no one to rely on. She had almost been given to be raised under the care of the Women’s Federation, but Michael had taken pity on her.
He was Michael Angelo, the sole heir of the Angelo family.
His mother had promised that if he married a housewife, he wouldn’t have to deal with the complicated competition between multiple husbands.
But Michael had fallen in love with Ruby.
He had insisted on marrying her.
For her sake, he had provided everything he could... protection, connections, power, money, and status.
But what had Ruby given him in return?
After turning eighteen, she brought another man into their relationship, claiming that she had fallen for him.
At the time, Michael’s family had repeatedly warned him not to compromise and not to continue loving a woman who treated him that way.
But Michael had grown up in a society where women having multiple husbands was completely normal. So he accepted it.
He even tolerated Jake constantly taking Ruby away from him and framing him whenever possible.
Eventually, Ruby began growing irritated with Michael. She no longer had the patience she once had.
She stopped making him the hot waffles he loved. She no longer prepared the snail noodles he enjoyed.
Little by little, she drifted farther and farther away from the woman he had once known.
By the time she was twenty-two, she had already taken five more husbands.
Michael remained by her side because he genuinely couldn’t let go of her.
But even that hadn’t been enough. When the apocalypse arrived, Ruby took in more husbands.
Before long, she had over thirty husbands, while Michael, as her primary husband, was responsible for making arrangements for all of them.
Once, he had possessed money, influence, and power. Now, he had nothing.
His family members had died during the apocalypse, leaving him with no one except Ruby.
And even now, she had made him realize how unreliable she had been all along.
Michael finished packing and was about to leave when Ruby suddenly rushed inside.
She knelt in front of him and grabbed his clothes.
"I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have slapped you. I was just furious about everything."
Her voice trembled.
"Please, Michael. Other than you, there’s almost no one I can truly call mine. Even the husbands I’ve taken in are mostly there for protection."
Michael remained silent. "Move. I need to leave."
Ruby shook her head desperately. "No, Michael. You can’t leave. Your medical condition will flare up."
Michael suddenly coughed.
Ruby’s expression changed.
"So you finally realize that my condition can flare up?"
Ruby shook her head repeatedly. "No, that’s not what I meant."
But Michael was no longer willing to listen. He pushed her away and walked out.
Ni Mengxue had no idea what had happened between the couple.
From her perspective, they were simply strange.
’Clearly, that woman cares about him, yet she still abuses him. And the man clearly lost all his love for her, yet he stayed beside her for so long.’
’Strange people.’
She quickly put the matter out of her mind and headed toward the laboratory she had rented.
This time, she couldn’t help taking a deep breath when she entered.
The laboratory in Silent Knight Base was actually quite decent.
It couldn’t compare to the facilities at Burning Star Base, but it was still far better than the laboratory she had used at the previous base.
Once inside, Ni Mengxue began taking out the herbs she had collected.
Meanwhile, Li Han had wandered into the perfume section.
