Chapter 94: Once Bitten Twice Shy
Fu Lin was confused by the strange question. "Yes, I was there."
Ni Mengxue’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Then tell me. Did you notice anything strange?"
Fu Lin stared at her. "What do you mean?"
Ni Mengxue’s expression turned serious. "An illusion."
She paused.
"Strange, isn’t it? Someone was able to perfectly imitate my voice. They even knew that the two people in charge would panic because both of them cared about me."
Fu Lin’s expression slowly changed.
"They won’t be rational enough to make a rational decision. And when the RV and the car arrived, they specifically attacked the two people I cared about most. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought an enemy had planned everything from the beginning."
Fu Lin clenched his fists. Now that Ni Mengxue had pointed it out, the situation did indeed seem strange.
However, he looked at her and said,
"Even then, it was my wife who was implicated for no reason. You don’t even show any remorse or guilt, Ni Mengxue. You truly are heartless."
"You would think about it that way," Ni Mengxue said calmly. "But from my perspective, I would meet Ruo Chiwu again."
Fu Lin was stunned. He suddenly grabbed Ni Mengxue’s hand.
"You mean to say she’s alive?"
Ni Mengxue laughed, but this time, there was a hint of bitterness in her laughter.
She shook her head and gently pulled her hand away.
"You might think humans have a hundred lives, or that some miracle can bring a dead person back to life. But reality is much crueler. We don’t have that ability. I don’t possess it. No one does."
She looked directly into Fu Lin’s eyes.
"As for meeting her again? Yes, you will meet her again. Remember this: once we all die, we’ll meet at the same place. The afterlife exists, and her soul must be waiting for you."
Fu Lin’s expression trembled.
"But if you kill yourself out of guilt, what about your resentment? What about everything she suffered because of someone’s scheme? Would you really be satisfied just by dying without punishing the people responsible?"
Ni Mengxue’s voice gradually became tinged with hatred.
"Would you be able to stand in front of her and face her when she asks, ’Did you take revenge for me?’"
Fu Lin flinched. For the first time, he realized that although Ni Mengxue hadn’t shown it, she wasn’t emotionless.
There was remorse. There was grief. And beneath it all, there was hatred.
Fu Lin took a deep breath. It was ironic.
He had spent so long blaming Ni Mengxue that he had completely forgotten about the possibility that Ruo Chiwu’s death might have been deliberately orchestrated.
As the thought settled in his mind, he suddenly began to sob.
Just how alone and terrified must she have felt?
Ni Mengxue didn’t stop him. Perhaps it was better this way.
At least he was letting the hatred out instead of bottling it up until it consumed him.
Fu Lin eventually turned and walked away.
Meanwhile, Fu Sinan looked at Meng Xiaoni, who was leaning halfway out of the RV window and listening to the conversation between Ni Mengxue and Fu Lin.
"If you want to listen, just go outside. There’s no need to stand in such a strange position."
Because Meng Xiaoni was tall, he had to bend at an awkward angle to lean through the window.
From outside, he looked rather handsome.
From inside the RV, however, he looked like a dark, crouching figure.
Meng Xiaoni finally pulled himself back and looked at Fu Sinan.
"You should mind your own business. Otherwise, your height won’t increase."
Within just one evening, he had gotten all the information he needed. Ni Mengxue favored Lu Yucai, so as long as he didn’t harm Lu Yucai or reveal his true thoughts about Ni Mengxue... he could offend anyone he wanted.
Even the little turnip in front of him. Fu Sinan’s expression darkened.
"You should worry about your own family instead of commenting on other people’s height."
Meng Xiaoni blinked. "So height is indeed your pressure point. I see."
Fu Sinan was speechless with anger. He truly couldn’t believe an adult could be this immature.
But then he thought about Ni Mengxue.
’These two really are suited for each other.’
Meng Xiaoni returned to the inner room, where he saw Lu Yucai lying on the bed. "I’ll stay inside too."
Lu Yucai glanced at him. "Don’t talk to me. I’ve never seen such an ungrateful person like you. I dislike you."
He turned away.
"I used to think you were a strategic person, but now I think you’re just a robot who doesn’t understand feelings."
Meng Xiaoni shrugged, lay down on the bed, and closed his eyes. He could let Lu Yucai insult him however he wanted.
As long as he got what he wanted, he didn’t care about anything else.
As for Ni Mengxue... he had indeed accepted that his verdict toward that woman had been too biased.
Maybe it was because of the face that even he, a robotic person... ended up blaming an innocent person.
When he had been married to Ni Mengxue, he had been filled with gratitude toward her. She had protected him and given him the chance to help his family before he died.
But that gratitude had died the day he saw her abusing her own husband.
She had been no different from an ordinary woman who repeatedly betrayed her partner... pursuing one man while secretly meeting another, claiming to love someone while only wanting his body.
He even remembered how she had joked about him to her best friend Gu Lin.
"If that slut wasn’t free or a compensation from Su Yao, I wouldn’t even look in his direction. Gigolos like him are as common as the zombie virus. If he doesn’t sleep with me, his stand-in will!"
Even if the current Ni Mengxue had changed, Meng Xiaoni, who had already been hurt twice... first by Su Yao and then by the original Ni Mengxue... so he couldn’t bring himself to trust or like anyone anymore.
