Cannon Fodder In Apocalypse: I Rule With Sanctuary Evolution System

Chapter 93: Heartless?

His smile softened.

"She also wanted to play with your child. So, in the future, if you ever have a child, please invite me."

Ni Mengxue clenched her fist.

Something seemed to lodge itself in her throat.

It was scratchy and painful, like a lump that refused to go down.

She could only give him a blank nod before entering the inner room.

Suddenly, she couldn’t face Fu Lin anymore.

Once she disappeared inside, Fu Lin’s smile slowly turned mocking.

Tears began to roll down his cheeks.

Inside the room, Ni Mengxue sat on the bed.

Across from her, Lu Yucai sat silently in his wheelchair. He wasn’t looking at her.

His eyes remained fixed on the floor. After a long silence, he spoke.

"I’ll be responsible for her death."

His voice was calm, but every word carried the weight of his guilt.

"It happened under my watch. She died because of my mistake."

Holding his hand, she said softly, "Yucai, blaming yourself for what happened won’t change anything."

Yucai looked at Ni Mengxue and asked quietly, "You don’t blame me even for a second?"

Ni Mengxue shook her head. Yucai laughed, but his laughter was bitter.

"Even if you don’t blame me, I blame myself. If I had been a little more paranoid, if I had been even a little calmer, I could have saved her."

The next second, Ni Mengxue hugged him. "Trust me. You wouldn’t have been able to."

She gently patted his back.

"Destiny has its own plan. You might think you can fight against fate, but destiny itself isn’t something humans can deceive."

As she said those words, bitterness bubbled in Ni Mengxue’s heart.

In her past life, when she was only twenty, a fortune teller had once divined that she would remain single her entire life and never marry.

Her family had been worried for her after hearing that prophecy. Later, some people even used it as an excuse to prevent her from reclaiming her position as the family’s heir.

Ni Mengxue hadn’t cared at the time. But when she fell in love with her last lover, Bo Xinli, everything changed.

She had been terrified that he would die too.

Because she knew about the prophecy, she desperately wanted to rebel against it. She tried everything she could to protect Bo Xingli.

In the end, nothing changed. He died too. And too, in a way that she regretted ever trying to save him.

That was why she understood something that many people refused to accept.

Humans could claim they could change destiny. They could boast that they had the power to overthrow fate.

But when destiny had already made its decision, no one could truly escape it. Hearing her words, Lu Yucai felt a deep sadness.

He hugged her tightly and closed his eyes, trying to lock away all his emotions. He didn’t want to break down in front of Ni Mengxue.

She must already be feeling terrible. Just then, a soft knock came from the door.

Ni Mengxue slowly pulled away.

"Go and check," Lu Yucai said.

Ni Mengxue nodded and opened the door.

Meng Xiaoni stood outside. Ni Mengxue sighed.

"I’m sorry. I forgot to transfer your rice. There’s not enough space here. How about this? Once we reach Burning Star Base, I will transfer the rice directly to you."

Meng Xiaoni looked at her and nodded. "Thank you. I don’t need anything else."

Lu Yucai watched his reaction and couldn’t help feeling furious.

He truly couldn’t understand Meng Xiaoni. He wasn’t comforting Ni Mengxue. He didn’t even seem to consider her a good person.

So how could he still accept her offer without the slightest hesitation or guilt?

As Lu Yucai thought this, Ni Mengxue closed the door.

"You are being too kind to him," Lu Yucai said softly. "He isn’t even your original husband."

Ni Mengxue chuckled. "Maybe I owed him this in my past life."

Lu Yucai frowned and looked at her. She only gave him a faint smile.

Later, when it was time to take the night watch, Fu Lin volunteered. Seeing this, Ni Mengxue volunteered as well.

The two of them left the RV and stood guard outside.

Lu Yucai was strongly against it. He was especially worried that Fu Lin might let his resentment take over and kill Ni Mengxue.

But Ni Mengxue simply reassured him. "Even if many people want to kill me, I have more lives than a cat. Don’t worry."

Lu Yucai still looked worried. He held her hand.

"Ni Mengxue, don’t you dare give your life away just because I made a mistake."

Ni Mengxue laughed. "I won’t. I’ve never had survivor’s guilt. I’m too old for that."

The guilt and emotions that might haunt a human after their loved one’s death was too old for her.

Lu Yucai frowned, but eventually let her go.

There was a strange calmness surrounding Ni Mengxue that he could never achieve himself.

’Maybe that’s why she’s able to handle this situation better than I can.’

Outside, Ni Mengxue and Fu Lin stood guard over the RV and the vehicles. After a while, Fu Lin suddenly chuckled.

"I truly admire you. You don’t even seem worried that your life is in danger, even though you’re standing right beside me."

Ni Mengxue laughed. "If you truly want to take my life, you’ll need the capability to do so."

Fu Lin gritted his teeth.

"Really? Ni Mengxue, I think you’re heartless. You’re actually saying that I don’t have the capability to kill you. Maybe it’s just your arrogance speaking. If I wanted to, I could kill you with the snap of my fingers."

Ni Mengxue smiled. "Then give it a try."

Fu Lin gritted his teeth and looked away.

Ni Mengxue continued calmly, "I know you won’t. You know that Ruo Chiwu loved me, and you also know that what happened was an accident. It wasn’t something anyone could have prevented."

Fu Lin’s expression twisted with anger.

"You’re lying! It could have been avoided. It could have been avoided if you had been there!"

Ni Mengxue chuckled. "Were you at the scene?"
