Chapter 156 : Chased
The Impala rolled down the highway.
Their destination was Bobby Singer’s salvage yard in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was a long drive from Ohio, and Dean intended to put as many miles between them and the cabin as possible before stopping.
Henry was still unconscious in the back seat. Anna sat beside him, watching the wound beneath his torn shirt. The white glow had grown fainter but still hadn’t disappeared.
Dean broke the silence. "Well... Nephilim, huh?"
"Yeah," Sam answered.
Dean kept his eyes on the road. "But how the hell did Henry become one? Half angel, half human."
"We don’t know." Sam looked over at him. "But we’ll get answers when he wakes up."
Almost on cue, Henry let out a quiet groan. His eyelids fluttered before slowly opening. He blinked several times, looking around in confusion. The familiar interior of the Impala came into focus. Anna beside him, Sam in the passenger seat, Dean behind the wheel.
Henry frowned. "So... where are we?" He rubbed the side of his head. "Did something happen?"
Dean let out a short laugh. "Yeah. I’d say something happened." He nodded toward Sam. "Sam killed an angel."
Henry stared at Sam. Then blinked. "...What?"
"It was Uriel," Sam said, looking uncomfortable. "He showed up after you passed out. Came to finish the job."
"And?"
Dean smirked. "Sammy put a Colt round through his back."
Henry turned to Sam. "You killed Uriel?"
Sam gave a small nod. "Didn’t have much choice."
Henry leaned back against the seat and let out a long breath. "...Well." A faint smile appeared on his face. "I definitely missed a lot."
Dean kept his eyes on the road. "And the truth comes out. You’re a Nephilim and the angels want you dead." He glanced at Henry through the rearview mirror. "Is that the secret you’ve been hiding?"
Henry sighed. "Well... cat’s out of the bag. No point hiding it anymore."
Sam turned around in his seat. "How did you become one?"
Henry was quiet for a few moments. "I don’t know."
Dean frowned. "What do you mean, you don’t know?"
"I mean exactly that." Henry rubbed his forehead.
"After the Lilith incident, I changed. That’s when all of this started. I’ve told you before that I don’t remember everything that happened that day. Whatever happened after that fight with Lilith... something changed inside me."
Sam watched him closely. "You really don’t know?"
Henry shook his head. "No."
Dean wasn’t convinced. "You’re not hiding something?"
Henry met his eyes in the rearview mirror. "No." He let out a slow breath.
"Let me ask you something. How does a human become half angel? Do you think there’s some ritual for that? I was lying there half dead after Lilith blasted me. The next thing I knew, my life was different." He shrugged helplessly.
"I don’t know if it was God, some freak supernatural event, or something else entirely."
Dean gave a skeptical snort. "Yeah, that’s bullshit."
Henry looked at him. "You’ve never prayed a day in your life," Dean said.
"Exactly," Henry replied. "Which is why I’m telling you I can’t explain it. If I wanted to lie, I’d make up something that actually sounded believable."
Neither Dean nor Sam could argue with that. Henry wasn’t giving them a convenient answer. He was admitting he had none.
Dean was quiet for a moment before a grin spread slowly across his face. "Well, look on the bright side. If somebody in the family’s gotta be part angel, I’m glad it’s you." He glanced at Henry in the mirror.
"So what now? You gonna sprout a pair of feathery wings and fly us the rest of the way to Bobby’s?"
Henry stared at him with a completely blank expression. "Dean."
"What?"
"Do I look like a chicken to you?"
Sam let out a laugh. Dean couldn’t help smirking. "Hey, I’m just asking."
Sam’s phone suddenly rang. He pulled it out and checked the screen. "Bobby." He answered. "Hey, Bobby."
"You boys on your way?" Bobby asked. "And don’t tell me you’re draggin’ another truckload of trouble to my place."
Sam exchanged a look with Dean. "Yeah... about that."
"What happened now?"
"We’re being hunted by angels."
Long silence.
"...I’m sorry, did you just say angels?"
"Yeah."
Another pause. "Well, ain’t that just perfect."
"We’re heading to your salvage yard."
Bobby sighed. "I swear, every time you idjits call me, the world’s somehow gotten worse."
Dean couldn’t help smirking. "Good to hear you too, Bobby."
"I’ll have the gates open. And you better start explainin’ the second you get here, ’cause I got a feelin’ this ain’t the kind of mess you fix with salt and a shotgun."
Dean reached over and took the phone from Sam. "Well... this time, Bobby, the mess is Henry’s fault."
Brief silence. "What the hell did the kid do?"
"Turns out our cousin’s a Nephilim."
Complete silence on the line. After several seconds, Bobby finally spoke. "...A what?"
"A Nephilim. Half angel, half human."
Another long pause. "Well... ain’t that somethin’."
"Yeah. Heaven apparently thinks so too. They sent an angel named Uriel after him."
Bobby’s voice hardened. "And?"
Dean smirked at Sam. "Sam put a Colt round through the son of a bitch."
Bobby didn’t respond immediately. Finally, he let out a tired sigh. "I leave you idjits alone for one damn week..."
Dean chuckled. "Tell me about it."
"Just get here in one piece. We’ll figure the rest out when you arrive."
