Chapter 198: Brooke York Actually Disagreed Too?
"Chloe, no matter what, I’ve raised you for over a decade. In my heart, you are my biological daughter!" Miles York played the family card with Chloe York, hoping to make her change her mind.
"My parents also raised your daughter for over a decade. Now that she’s returned to your side, you’re not letting me return to my parents. That’s a bit unreasonable, isn’t it!"
Since it had come to this, it seemed impossible for Miles to refuse.
"How about this? Let me think it over, alright? After all, this is still a major matter. What do you think?"
"What do you need to consider?" Chloe didn’t understand. She was the one transferring her household registration out, so what did he have to consider?
"Chloe, the company is still in a period of growth right now, and we can’t have any negative press. Give me some time to consider how to word it. We have to make sure the company’s stock doesn’t plummet, right?"
Miles didn’t state it explicitly since Alice Cole was still here, but Chloe understood perfectly well. She still held shares in York Group!
Thinking about it, it made sense. If the company was affected, it would impact her as a shareholder as well. Even though she didn’t know how much she’d get from the year-end dividends, it was still great to have an income without investing a single cent or putting in any physical labor!
"Alright then. I’ll give you three days to come up with a solution. If you can’t, then we’ll do exactly as I suggested. I won’t be able to care about the fallout. Understood?"
Miles nodded, and Chloe simply turned and left.
Now Alice was truly lost. What were they talking about? Why was Chloe suddenly being so agreeable? The moment she heard the family’s shares would drop, she immediately gave Miles time to consider? However, the most important thing for her right now was to share this good news with Brooke York. She immediately called Brooke to tell her.
"Mom, what did you say? Chloe wants to cut ties with the York family?"
Brooke was thrilled to hear this, but she quickly had another thought. Chloe had never mentioned this before. Could her sudden decision to sever ties be a task from her system? If she completed this task, she might receive an even greater, incredibly tempting reward. If that was the case, she couldn’t let Chloe have her way. She couldn’t allow her to break ties with the York family. This way, Chloe wouldn’t be able to complete her task, and she wouldn’t get the reward.
"Yes, and your dad still hasn’t agreed!" Alice grew angry just talking about it. She had repeatedly said she agreed, yet he stubbornly refused. She was the one who had raised the girl, so she was the one with the right to decide whether to cut ties or not!
"Mom, you can’t let Dad agree. Neither of you can agree," Brooke said, her tone agitated.
She was terrified that they would just agree to let Chloe sever ties with the York family. If that happened, they would be doing Chloe another huge favor. How could she not resent them for that? She was their actual biological daughter, yet their actions were always helping Chloe instead.
Alice hadn’t expected Brooke to say they shouldn’t agree. Shouldn’t her daughter be the most supportive? Shouldn’t she be the happiest about this? How could she share her dad’s opinion and disagree? Was there something she didn’t know, or something she hadn’t thought of?
"Brooke, Chloe cutting ties with your dad is a good thing. How could you...?" Alice trailed off, genuinely unable to understand.
"Mom, trust me. If you don’t want Chloe to have an easy life, just don’t agree. You absolutely cannot agree. Never mind, I’ll ask for a day off tomorrow and come back for a visit. That’s all."
With that, Brooke hung up the phone, completely denying Alice the chance to ask for clarifications.
Staring at the disconnected call, Alice’s brows remained tightly knitted. Did this mean that in this entire house, she was the only one who agreed with Chloe cutting ties with the York family?
The next day.
Brooke woke up very early. She packed what she needed and went back home. No matter what, she couldn’t let Chloe get the reward.
Upon returning to the York family villa, she saw Alice applying a face mask, looking extremely relaxed.
"Mom, where’s Dad?"
Hearing Brooke’s voice, Alice’s face lit up with joy, but when she heard Brooke asking for her dad the moment she returned, her good mood instantly vanished.
"Brooke, I’m your mother! It seems like you don’t even like me anymore; you only care about finding your dad!"
Brooke was truly in no mood to deal with Alice right now, but realizing that the woman was still useful, she said, "Mom, I’m just anxious to find Dad so I can tell him not to agree to Chloe cutting ties with him. I’m just in a hurry, that’s all."
"Fine, I forgive you. Your dad went to the company. Did you forget? Today is Wednesday."
"Then I’ll go to the company to find him." Saying this, Brooke turned around, ready to leave and head to the office.
"Hey, Brooke, why are you in such a rush?" Seeing Brooke so anxious just to prevent Chloe from cutting ties with the York family, Alice wondered if this was really her daughter. She truly couldn’t understand it.
"Mom, I don’t have time to explain it to you. We’ll talk when I get back."
Seeing Brooke come back travel-worn, only to leave again decisively after exchanging just a few words, Alice lost all mood to do her face mask. She ripped it off. "I feel like I’m the only outsider in this family. They’re all in it together, and they never explain things clearly no matter what they do."
Brooke rushed over to York Group. After entering the lobby, she headed straight for the elevators. However, the security gates required facial recognition, and her face wasn’t in the system.
Left with no choice, she walked over to the front desk. "You two. I’m Brooke York, your Mr. York’s daughter. Open the gate for me. I need to go in and find my dad."
It was Brooke’s first time here, and she didn’t want people to look down on her. These receptionists had definitely seen Chloe before, so she needed to let them know that she was the true daughter of the York family.
Hearing her voice, the two receptionists looked at each other before standing up to look at Brooke. "Miss York, we know who you are. Please, follow me."
One of the young ladies stepped out from behind the front desk and walked over to the gates where Brooke had just been blocked. She swiped her employee ID card, instantly unlocking the turnstile to let her through.
"Miss York, you can go through now. The CEO’s office is on the 20th floor."
"Thank you!"
Dropping those two words, Brooke walked through, headed to the elevator, pressed the button, and waited. Meanwhile, the receptionist returned to the front desk.
"Hey, is that really Mr. York’s daughter? Why do I remember her looking completely different the last time she came?"
"You know, I told you to read fewer novels and pay more attention to company matters to make your job easier, but you just wouldn’t listen. Didn’t you know about the recent uproar over the true daughter of the York family?"
"I didn’t! Was it really that big of an uproar? That doesn’t make sense. If it was such a big deal, I definitely should’ve known about it!"
"Just go search for it online right now. You can still find it. However, this Miss York is a bit rude. You can really tell she just came back to the family—she doesn’t have an ounce of elegance. Although the previous one wasn’t much better, at least she was quite respectful to people."
As the receptionist spoke, the other girl wasn’t listening at all, fully engrossed in her online search.
The elevator arrived, and Brooke stepped inside.
