Chapter 191: A Pile of Designer Stuff
Knowing Chloe York’s ultimate fate put Brooke York in an exceptionally good mood. Previously, she had felt it was absolutely impossible to beat Chloe, but who would have thought! Now, she had a system of her own. More importantly, she was the female protagonist. It went without saying that Chloe would never be a match for her.
"Sweetheart, you seem to be in a particularly good mood lately. Did something make you happy?" Alice Cole had also noticed her daughter’s high spirits since she returned. Ever since Brooke came back, she had always been either unhappy or overly cautious. This was the first time Alice had seen her radiating such confidence and joy.
"Mom, I just figured things out, that’s all. So what if Chloe is more capable than me right now? After all, she’s lived with the York family for so many years. Growing up in that kind of environment is the only reason she suddenly has some skills to show off.
"But the truth is, I don’t need to be jealous of her at all, do I? Because I’m the real daughter of the York family now. In the future, only I can be the head of our family’s company. Chloe is nothing."
Brooke chose not to mention anything to Alice about binding to a system or being the female protagonist of a book. After all, she didn’t even like Alice that much anymore. On the contrary, she didn’t trust her. Alice kept claiming that Brooke was her biological daughter, yet it felt like everything Alice did never actually benefited her.
"Brooke, it’s wonderful that you can think this way. Let me tell you, as long as your mother is here, there’s no way I’ll let Chloe take charge of the company. The only person who will head the York Group is you." Hearing Brooke’s words made Alice feel incredibly relieved, prompting her to offer this firm reassurance.
"Mhm, I know."
"Alright, it’s been a long trip back for you. Get some good rest."
Brooke nodded. But the moment Alice left the room, her expression darkened.
Dottie spoke up, "Host, why does it seem like you don’t really like your mother? I just ran a scan and detected that everything she said was the truth. She is looking out for you, and she truly wants you to surpass Chloe and become the head of the York Group." Dottie’s tone carried obvious confusion. It felt that if Alice supported Brooke, her odds of winning would be even higher.
"You came late, so you don’t know what she’s done to me. Whenever Miles York takes a tough stance, she just follows his lead to make me suffer. All her talk about being my mother and helping me—it’s just talk.
"Besides, like you said, I’m the female protagonist now. And I have you. It doesn’t matter if she’s on my side or not. Even if she goes over to Chloe’s side, that’s fine too. Siding with the wicked supporting female lead will only guarantee her a miserable end."
Brooke sneered. She stopped talking to the system, and the system also fell silent.
Meanwhile, at Chloe’s rented apartment.
Chloe watched as people continuously moved boxes inside. They carried in designer clothes, luxury bags, and all sorts of high-end jewelry. Her apartment was originally quite spacious, but as these items were stuffed inside, it instantly felt smaller, even a little cramped.
When the landlady had knocked on the door earlier, Chloe thought something was up. She hadn’t expected her to suddenly usher in a group of men and women hauling heaps of luxury goods. If it had been anything else, she would have kicked them out immediately, but these were all highly valuable items. Added together, these valuables had to be worth tens of millions. Although she was wealthy now, she really couldn’t be sure if her own jewelry and the balance in her bank account would amount to tens of millions.
"Ma’am, whose things are these? Why are you suddenly moving them into my place? Hasn’t this apartment already been rented to me?"
"Oh my, you’re asking whose things these are? Aren’t they for you, little lady?" The landlady looked at Chloe with an enthusiastic smile, leaving Chloe utterly bewildered.
"For me?"
"Of course! If they weren’t for you, why would I bring these people here, have you open the door, and let them move all this expensive stuff in?" the landlady said matter-of-factly.
"But I don’t know them, and I have no idea why they’re moving these things here!" Chloe replied, turning to the movers. She intended to tell them to take everything back to wherever it came from. "Excuse me, I’m sorry to interrupt," she said to them, "but I didn’t buy these items. You might have delivered them to the wrong place."
"May I ask if you are Miss Chloe York?"
"Yes!"
"Then there’s no mistake. The person who called us to order these items and arrange the delivery specifically stated they were a gift for Chloe York."
After answering Chloe’s question, the woman left. The rest of the crew followed suit one by one, leaving behind a massive pile of luxury goods sitting there as if they were worthless knick-knacks.
Seeing them preparing to leave, Chloe tried to stop them; they still hadn’t told her who the sender was. However, assuming she was trying to get them to haul the stuff back out, the landlady quickly grabbed her arm. "Hey, Chloe! If someone wants to give this to you, just accept it! How can you ask them to take back a gift? That’s just rude!"
The landlady reasoned that with so many designer goods, selling just one piece at random would guarantee a comfortable life, let alone the whole lot. After all, Chloe was her tenant. If her tenant had money, she wouldn’t have to worry about rent, so she absolutely did not want Chloe to return the items. At that moment, the landlady completely forgot that if Chloe were truly that rich, she would likely buy her own house instead of renting one.
"You’ve misunderstood," Chloe said to the landlady. "I just wanted to ask who sent them. With so many gifts, the least I can do is find out who the sender is, right?"
"Oh my, why didn’t you say so earlier? I held you back, and now they’re already gone." The landlady hastily let go of Chloe’s hand.
"I’m going to chase after them."
When Chloe reached the ground floor, she caught sight of the delivery crew just as they were preparing to leave. "Wait a minute!"
Hearing her shout, the woman who had spoken to Chloe earlier stopped and turned to watch Chloe jogging toward her.
"Hello, I just want to ask—who ordered these things for me?"
"I’m sorry, we can’t disclose that."
"Why not?"
"The person who placed the order over the phone instructed us not to let Miss York know who the sender is. Please don’t make this difficult for me, Miss York."
"Is it Willow Kane?" Since the woman refused to tell her, Chloe decided to guess. Judging by the items delivered, it was highly likely the sender was a woman. Among the women she knew, the only one she could think of was Willow Kane—after all, Chloe had saved her life. From their brief interaction that day, she got the impression that this was exactly Willow’s style. She was just that kind of person.
"I’m sorry, Miss York, but we really can’t say." With an apologetic smile, the woman got into her car. The other vehicles drove off one by one.
Watching the cars disappear into the distance, Chloe sighed in exasperation. Rich people really didn’t treat money like money. Sending over such a massive haul of valuables just like that—and keeping it a secret, to boot.
