Chapter 213 - 212: He Loves Himself More
"What are you talking about? Your mother died from complications during childbirth! What does that have to do with me?!" Deloria didn’t believe for a second they had any evidence, so she yelled at him with brazen confidence,
"I get it now. You waited for Henry to get into trouble so you could come back and fight for the family inheritance, didn’t you?! You’re the one who framed Henry, right!?"
In that moment, Deloria was no different from a common shrew, showing none of the poise or grace of a noble lady.
"Frame him? ’If you don’t want anyone to know, don’t do it.’ Is that waste of a son of yours even worthy of me framing him?" Cole took a few steps back in disgust and sat down next to Leon.
"You need evidence when you speak, Auntie. Just like I have evidence that you murdered my mother, and that your son repeatedly hired assassins to kill me."
Old Man Cole paused in his shuffling of papers and handed the USB drive from the file folder to the butler.
The butler understood, connected the USB drive to a computer, and played a video of them interrogating the doctor who had delivered the baby.
"It was Miss Jones who approached me several times back then, telling me to ’do something’ during the first mistress’s delivery.
"I didn’t want to do it at first, but she threatened the lives of my husband and two children, so I had no choice but to agree. Afterward, I was afraid she would kill me to tie up loose ends, so I emigrated with my whole family.
"I’ve lived with guilt and anxiety all these years. I am so sorry for what I did to the first mistress.
"This is an audio recording I secretly made when I met with Miss Jones."
The audio began to play, capturing Deloria threatening and bribing the doctor to ensure Cole’s mother had complications during childbirth.
Cole watched with a blank expression. He had already seen the video several times; it no longer stirred any emotion in him.
’Whether her guilt and anxiety are real or not, it won’t bring his mother and younger brother back. So it doesn’t matter anymore. All he wants is a life for a life from the mastermind.’
"This is all fake! It’s slander! Cole, God will not forgive you for framing your own aunt just for the inheritance!"
Deloria lunged forward to grab the computer, but the quick-witted butler dodged her. Leon’s men then moved in and restrained her.
Leon chuckled nonchalantly. "Everyone in this room is a major figure in Country A. Miss Jones, you should really conduct yourself with more dignity. We wouldn’t want any accidents. Patriarch Jones doesn’t mind me doing this, does he?"
Old Man Cole: ’...You’ve said everything there is to say. What am I supposed to add?!’
However, thinking of the documents he had just finished reading, he waved his hand dismissively. "I don’t mind. In fact, I should thank Leader Leon for his assistance."
"Father? I’m your daughter! Are you really going to side with outsiders and treat your own flesh and blood like this?!" Deloria stared at her father in utter disbelief.
Old Man Cole’s gaze was filled with disappointment. "Daughter? A daughter who only covets the family inheritance? A daughter who wants me dead? Or a daughter who poisoned her brother and sister-in-law so they could never conceive another child?"
Deloria’s lips trembled, but in the end, not a single word came out.
’Looks like that bastard Cole found out everything. And the old goat has already given up on me. What else is there to say?’
’Besides, the old goat will definitely protect me. He wouldn’t bear to see me die. As long as I’m alive, I have nothing to fear from anyone or anything.’
Cole’s lips curled into a sneer. "But then again, you’re really not that bright.
"Even Brown knew enough to kill the temp worker who planted the bomb to tie up loose ends, yet you were stupid enough to let the person go.
"I wonder, when you wake up in the middle of the night, do you ever think about my mother and younger brother, whom you murdered?"
Old Man Cole’s hand, gripping his cane, trembled slightly. ’So... the one who brought the truth about the explosion to light a while ago was his eldest grandson, whom he hadn’t seen in ten years. This was a test of his attitude, wasn’t it?’
Deloria closed her eyes and said no more, adopting the shameless air of someone who has nothing left to lose.
Unfortunately, no one cared. Today’s outcome had been decided long ago. Only she was still living in a dream, believing she could walk away from this unscathed.
The Duke of Baelen rubbed the thumb ring on his hand and said in a mild tone, "Old Man Cole, the evidence is conclusive. It’s time for you to take a stand."
"Hold on, let me just say something," Leon interjected. He wasn’t looking at Old Man Cole, but at Deloria with a smirk,
"Miss Jones, I don’t think you should be celebrating just yet.
"After all, Cole and I have been through hell and back together. Even if you manage to walk away from this today, there’s no way I’d let someone who hurt my brother live out the rest of their life in peace."
Although his words were aimed at Deloria, everyone present knew exactly who the warning was truly for.
Yvonne Lowell had told them that if they ever needed to, the two of them could use any of her identities to show off.
But Leon didn’t think it was necessary. He was the leader of the great International Mercenary Corps, which was far from useless. Lowell’s name was a trump card, to be saved for when it truly mattered.
Deloria’s head snapped up. "Are you threatening me?!"
"Tsk. You’re supposedly a ’top student’ who got a fancy degree from a prestigious university. How is your reading comprehension so poor? I’m just giving you a friendly reminder, get it?"
Her shrill voice made Leon’s ears ache. He rolled his eyes in annoyance.
One of his subordinates took the hint and gagged her. The pressure was now on Old Man Cole.
Old Man Cole looked at Cole with a complicated expression. There was longing, admiration, and relief in his eyes—but not a trace of resentment.
Because if he were in Cole’s shoes, he would have done the same thing.
Finally, he just sighed. "You can do with her as you wish. But I want Cole to come back and become the next Family Head."
"Agreed."
Cole agreed without a second thought. After all, this was one of the reasons he had returned.
"Mmph! Mmph!" Deloria stared at him in disbelief.
It was unclear whether she couldn’t believe her father had just abandoned her, or that Cole, the cast-off son, could actually become the Family Head.
"Alright. We’ve disturbed you enough for today. We’ll be leaving now." The Duke of Baelen stood up with Cole’s help.
"Is Cole leaving too? The building you used to live in has always been kept clean. It’s just as you left it," Old Man Cole said, trying to get him to stay.
Cole paused. "Grandfather, I’ll be back once I’ve taken care of this matter. Since I’ve agreed to take the position of Family Head, I won’t go back on my word."
With that, he helped the Duke of Baelen out, not once looking back.
And Deloria was dragged out by Leon’s men.
Once the living room was empty, Old Man Cole seemed to age ten years in an instant, slumping weakly into his chair.
The old butler, worried, began to pat his back to soothe him. "Old Master..."
"I’m fine," Old Man Cole said, waving his hand to cut him off. "She got what she deserved."
Did he love his child? Of course, he did.
But he loved himself more, and he loved the family estate, built over generations, even more.
And his eldest grandson, Cole, was capable, ruthless, and well-connected—the perfect choice for Family Head.
But ultimately, he had become estranged from his eldest grandson...
’So be it. Under Cole’s leadership, the Jones Family would surely go further. And as for himself, this grandfather could at least live out his remaining years in peace. That was enough.’
After leaving the house, Cole looked up at the brightly shining sun.
Next up was Brown.
