Chapter 148 - 147: Long Time No See
Nina Jennings came over to talk to Yvonne Lowell, but before she could even get close, she was subjected to an eyeful of their PDA.
Leo Grant calmly swallowed the cake in his mouth, not even sparing her a glance.
"This is just a little fun between a couple. It’s normal for a single person like you not to understand."
"Hey! Whatever, I’m not going to argue with you. Step aside. I’m here to talk to Yvonne about something important," Nina Jennings shot him a look.
Hearing this, Yvonne Lowell hooked her finger around his. "Why don’t you go chat with my older brother or Boss Crawford for a bit?"
Leo Grant pursed his lips. "Fine. But make sure you come find me later."
"Okay, I’ll find you as soon as we’re done talking."
Leo Grant turned and left reluctantly, not forgetting to take the cake plate from her hand.
"TSK TSK TSK, not bad, girl. You’ve trained him well," Nina Jennings said, looking at her teasingly.
Yvonne Lowell shot her a sidelong glance. "Get to the point."
Nina Jennings cleared her throat and jutted her chin diagonally across the room.
"See that pretty young lady over there in the apricot gown? Does she look familiar to you? I feel like I’ve seen her before, but I can’t place her."
Based on her understanding of Yvonne Lowell, if it was truly someone they knew, Yvonne would definitely remember.
Because aside from being the best at holding grudges, Yvonne Lowell also had an excellent memory for beautiful things.
Yvonne Lowell looked up and saw a vaguely familiar face.
Her eyes narrowed as she sifted through her memories.
Finally, a pretty face, even more innocent and pale than the girl’s across the room, surfaced in her mind.
She spoke with certainty, "That’s Finn."
Nina Jennings was stunned for a moment, then looked at the girl across the room in pleasant surprise. "You mean that sickly little thing?!"
The two of them had once taken an assassination mission. The target was a major corrupt official, holed up in a top-floor VIP suite of a large hospital in Country M.
With a combination of skill and luck, everything had gone very smoothly for them.
But just as they were preparing to leave, a guard who should have been absent during the shift change suddenly pushed the door open.
The two reacted instantly, taking them out with their silenced pistols. But these loyal hounds, before joining their master in death, still managed to sound the alarm.
The entire hospital went into lockdown instantly. The two exchanged a look and jumped straight out the window.
They landed on the windowsill of a hospital room one floor below, where they saw a lone girl with an Asian face sitting on the bed. She looked to be only a year or two younger than them.
When the girl saw them, not only did she not panic or scream, she actually looked at them calmly and waved them inside.
The pair froze for a second, but given the emergency, they chose to jump into the room.
Before either of them could speak, the girl told them there were her sister’s clothes in the wardrobe and that perhaps they could make do and change their outfits.
Yvonne Lowell and Nina Jennings thought for a moment, then agreed.
So they took off their outer masks and changed their clothes. They were still wearing hyper-realistic masks underneath, so they weren’t worried about being recognized later.
And just like that, they became "sisters" visiting a patient, successfully avoiding the guards’ search.
They learned from their later conversation that the girl’s name was Zoe Vance. She was from Aurelia and had come to Country M for medical treatment.
At the time, Nina Jennings had even teased the girl, asking if she wasn’t worried they were bad people.
She remembered the girl’s reply: "If you wanted to hurt me, you could have done it from outside the window, couldn’t you?"
"I don’t know the exact line between good people and bad people, but I’ve read reports online about the person staying on the floor above me."
"Even though I’m not from this country, the fact that you could cause such chaos upstairs makes you good people in the eyes of most of its citizens. And since you didn’t hurt me, you’re good people to me."
After leaving the hospital, they looked up Zoe Vance’s background.
They discovered another reason her parents had sent her abroad: back home, she had a paternal uncle who was covetously trying to seize power.
They worried he would harm the frail and sickly girl, so sending her far from home was also a form of protection.
Nina Jennings’s heart softened. The next day, she returned to the hospital, brought up Michael White’s name, and offered to treat her illness as a reward for taking them in.
Of course, it would depend on the girl’s own willingness.
The young girl was moved to tears. She had thought she would spend the rest of her life bedridden, kept alive only by medication.
She never expected that this chance encounter would give her a new lease on life.
After Zoe Vance recovered, she asked for their contact information but was refused.
They all thought their paths would never cross again. But a year later, the little rascal hacked the website of their Pluto headquarters.
It wasn’t that hackers hadn’t tried to breach their website before, but this was the first one daring enough to make code that looked like splattering poop on their screens.
When Yvonne Lowell hacked the other party’s computer camera, she discovered it was an old acquaintance.
Yvonne Lowell was so furious that she immediately tracked down her address, grabbed Nina Jennings, and marched right over to her door.
It was also on that occasion that Zoe Vance learned their real names and saw their true faces.
Yvonne Lowell, appreciating her talent, wanted to recruit her, but this time it was the girl’s turn to refuse.
Her reason was simple: she needed to study hard so she could return to Aurelia to take the national college entrance exams.
Yvonne Lowell and Nina Jennings: ...
But they didn’t force the issue, and the matter was dropped.
Although they later heard about Zoe Vance’s achievements in the world of computing, that day had been the last time they met.
Her mind returned to the present.
Yvonne Lowell’s lips curled as she looked at the girl across the room. The computer newbie from all those years ago was now the famous "Yu," one of the top five hackers in the world.
As if sensing their gaze, the girl turned her head, and her eyes couldn’t help but light up.
Nina Jennings smiled and waved at her. The young girl lifted the hem of her skirt and scurried over. "Sis Lowell, Nina."
Yvonne Lowell patted her on the head. "Long time no see, Finn."
"I actually saw you guys as soon as I came in, but you looked busy, so I was too shy to come over," Zoe Vance said, scratching her head in embarrassment.
Nina Jennings discreetly took her wrist. The results of the pulse diagnosis made her let out a huge sigh of relief.
She poked her on the forehead in mock annoyance and said softly,
"Silly girl, what’s with this ghostly makeup? You almost made me doubt my own medical skills."
"Hehe, sometimes showing a little weakness is a form of self-preservation."
Currently, only her parents and older sister knew she had recovered; everyone else was kept in the dark.
Although her scumbag second uncle and aunt were in prison, and her older cousin hadn’t turned out bad thanks to being raised by their grandparents, she hadn’t forgotten about her younger cousin. That one had inherited her parents’ vicious nature to a T.
’If she kept pretending to be sick, maybe she could bait someone into making a move?’
Nina Jennings raised an eyebrow. "Not bad, you’ve got a sharp mind. When did you come back to Aurelia?"
"During summer vacation. I’m a senior at Solstice High now."
"Summer vacation? Then why didn’t you come to my return banquet?" Yvonne Lowell asked, looking at her suspiciously.
