Chapter 54— The Gateway to Ash.
Chapter 54— The Gateway to Ash.
Seventy-two hours passed in a fury of silent, calculated preparations.
Deep within the subterranean chambers of the Underworld Stronghold—far beneath the bustling streets of the capital—the heavy ambient mana video vibrated with an intense, high-frequency hum.
Giant runic conduits, carved directly into the ancient bedrock, glowed with brilliant violet light as they siphoned energy from the bound Second Heavenly Seal.
Kaelen stood on the stone observation platform overlooking the central portal ring.
His dark coat rustled gently in the cold draft created by the stabilizing spatial distortion.
At his hip, the Void Blade rested silently in its sheath, its dark steel absorbing the flickering violet light of the chamber.
Ren was stationed at the main control console, his hands moving across holographic arrays with practiced speed.
Sweating slightly despite the cool temperature of the cavern, his crimson eyes reflected lines of scrolling spatial coordinates.

"Calculations are locked, Kaelen," Ren called out, tapping a final sequence into the glowing console.
"The spatial tunnel bypasses the main naval arrays along the Sea of Ash. We’re dropping straight into a dead zone near the border port of Oakhaven."
Lyra walked up the stone steps to join Kaelen on the platform, her holy sword strapped securely to her back. She wore light silver-and-black traveling armor designed for mobility rather than ceremonial display. Her jaw was set, her blue eyes sharp with quiet determination.
"Elena has taken full control of the Royal Council alongside King Alden," Lyra reported quietly. "The capital’s defense arrays have been reinforced, and House Vance’s remaining assets have been liquidated into military supplies for the eastern watchtowers."
"Good," Kaelen replied smoothly, without turning his head. "This realm must hold its ground if an imperial scout ship slips past us."
Tsubaki emerged from the shadows near the entrance of the chamber, bowing his head respectfully toward Kaelen. His black katana was wrapped in fresh leather bindings, his aura completely suppressed to avoid drawing spatial attention. "The perimeter is secured, My Lord. No eyes within the capital are aware of the gateway’s activation."
HUMMMMMM!
A deep, resonant vibration shook the cavern floor as the central portal ring ignited. A vortex of dark violet energy erupted in the center of the stone structure, spinning violently before smoothing out into a mirror-like surface that reflected a bleak, desolate landscape of gray ash and black spires.

Kaelen stepped to the edge of the platform, his icy violet eyes locking onto the gray landscape visible through the gateway.
"The Vaelorian Empire operates under a strict hierarchy of strength," Kaelen stated, his voice calm and unyielding. "In their eyes, the Central Realm is nothing more than livestock to be harvested. We are not going there to negotiate."
Lyra drew a sharp breath, resting her gloved hand on the pommel of her blade. "We destroy their invasion infrastructure before it reaches our home."
"Precisely," Kaelen said.
He stepped off the platform, his boots crossing the threshold of the portal without a second of hesitation. Lyra, Ren, and Tsubaki followed immediately behind him, their figures disappearing into the swirling violet vortex.
SWOOSH!
The sensation of spatial travel lasted less than three seconds, but the contrast upon arrival was immediate and harsh.
The warm, moist air of the subterranean chamber was replaced by a biting, metallic chill. The sky above was not dark indigo or blue, but a perpetual twilight covered by heavy, swirling clouds of dark volcanic ash that obscured the sun.
Kaelen materialized on a high, rocky cliff overlooking a jagged coastline. Below them, the vast, black waters of the Sea of Ash churned violently against jagged obsidian rocks.

Ren dropped to one knee, checking his arm console as the spatial gateway behind them collapsed into a tiny, hidden runic mark carved into the cliffside.
"Gateway concealed," Ren confirmed, wiping a thin layer of fine gray ash from his screen.
"The spatial mark is anchored to the rock. I can reopen the return path in three seconds if we need an emergency extraction."
"We won’t need an extraction," Kaelen said coldly, sweeping his gaze across the horizon.
A few miles down the coast, nestled between two massive basalt cliffs, lay a sprawling fortified port city.
Giant iron watchtowers bristled with heavy mana cannons, while dozens of sleek, dark-hulled imperial warships rode the rough waves of the harbor.
Massive banners bearing the golden dragon emblem of the Vaelorian Empire fluttered heavily in the freezing wind.
"Oakhaven Port," Lyra murmured, standing beside Kaelen as she squinted through the hazy air. "It’s far larger than the capital’s naval docks."
"It’s not just a port," Ren added, pulling up local tactical schematics intercepted from Draven’s core. "It’s the primary assembly point for the Vaelorian 4th Vanguard Fleet. That’s where they’re gathering troops and mana supplies for the invasion."
Suddenly, Tsubaki’s ears twitched. His hand dropped to his hilt as he shifted into a low stance.
"My Lord. Patrol incoming from the eastern ridge. Three signatures."
Through the hazy, ash-filled air, three heavy armored figures riding quadrupedal, reptilian beasts crested the ridge fifty yards away. They were clad in the distinctive dark iron armor of Vaelorian border scouts, their lances glowing with faint red mana.
"Halt!" the lead scout bellowed, his voice amplified by his helmet’s array as he spotted Kaelen’s group. "Unregistered entities in Sector 9! Identify your authority or be executed on sight!"

The lead scout raised his hand, charging his mana lance to fire a flare into the sky to alert the port garrison. "Hostile intruders! Fire the—"
SCHWING!
The scout never finished his sentence.
Kaelen didn’t even turn his body. With a flick of his wrist, a thin line of void mana surged from his finger, slicing across fifty yards of open air in a fraction of a millisecond.
CRACK!
The lead scout’s head, along with his heavy iron helmet and the mana lance in his hand, was cleanly severed from his shoulders.
Blood sprayed into the gray ash as his body slumped lifelessly off his mount.
The remaining two scouts gasped in sheer terror, attempting to pull their beasts back—but Tsubaki was already behind them like a ghost.
Two silent flashes of black steel crossed in the air.
Slash!
Both scouts fell from their mounts, their armor cleaving open as Tsubaki smoothly sheathed his katana without a single drop of blood touching his blade.

Ren walked over to one of the fallen scouts, tapping his console against the dead soldier’s wrist gauntlet to siphon his imperial access codes.
"Got their clearance keys," Ren reported with a grin.
"These codes will provide us with access to Oakhaven’s lower supply channels without triggering the main city barrier."
Kaelen looked down at the massive, smoke-belching imperial port of Oakhaven, his eyes cold and unreadable beneath the gray sky of the Vaelorian Empire.
"The invasion fleet dies in the harbor," Kaelen commanded. "Move in."
