Death Game in another world

Chapter 49—The Broken Strings.

Chapter 49—The Broken Strings.

High above the subterranean vaults, the Grand Ballroom of the Royal Palace was a sea of glittering gold, polished white marble, and sparkling crystal chandeliers.

Music from a forty-piece orchestra floated through the air, mixing with the gentle clinking of wine flutes and the muffled laughter of the high nobility.

At the center of the raised royal dais stood Marquis Vance.

Clad in a tailored velvet coat embroidered with crimson threads and wearing the crest of the Royal Council, the Marquis raised his crystal goblet toward the massive crowd of dukes, barons, and military commanders.

His smile was smooth, relaxed, and triumphant — the smile of a man who believed he held every thread of the kingdom firmly within his hands.

"My esteemed lords and ladies," Marquis Vance spoke, his voice enchanted with sound-amplification magic so it echoed warmly across the massive hall.

"Tonight, we do not merely celebrate the anniversary of our kingdom’s prosperity. Tonight, we celebrate unity. With King Alden resting under the quiet care of the royal physicians, the Royal Council has worked tirelessly to secure our borders and ensure our eternal stability."

The crowd applauded politely, though several older dukes exchanged uneasy glances. Everyone knew the king had been a silent recluse for three years, but no one dared question the Marquis’s growing authority.

"To complete this vision of absolute harmony," Marquis Vance continued, his eyes gleaming with ambition, and he gestured toward the glass conservatory doors on the upper balcony.

"I am honored to announce the betrothal of my eldest son, Lord Julian Vance, to Lady Elena Silverwing! By merging our households, the legacy of the Silverwings shall be preserved under the protective wing of House Vance!"

Julian Vance, an arrogant young noble standing near the front, stepped forward with a smug smirk, bowing deeply to the cheering crowd.

The Marquis raised his glass higher, his smile widening.

"To the eternal glory of our realm—"

BZZZT!

Before the Marquis Vance could take a sip, a violent, agonizing shockwave erupted inside his brain.

It felt as though an incandescent iron spike had been driven directly through his skull from the inside out. The atmospheric mana surrounding him flickered wildly, turning pitch-black before snapping like a severed violin string.

"Gah!"

Marquis Vance gasped, his glass slipping from his gloved fingers and shattering loudly against the polished marble floor. Wine spilled like fresh blood across his boots as he staggered backward, clutching his temple while cold sweat instantly soaked his embroidered collar.

CLANG!

Parasitic System Core (Level 4): Disconnected from Host

The loud chatter in the ballroom died down instantly. The orchestra stumbled into an awkward silence as hundreds of eyes locked onto the breathless, trembling Marquis.

"My Lord?" Julian Vance rushed up the dais, reaching out to support his father’s trembling arm. "What is wrong? Father?"

"My... my head..." Vance wheezed, his vision burning with distorted red warning screens that blared across his sight. His heart hammered in terror.

The Parasitic Core — the secret external artifact given to him by his unseen patrons to control King Alden’s soul — had just been forcefully torn apart!

Panicking, the Marquis reached into his coat pocket with a trembling hand, pressing his finger against the encrypted communication rune linked exclusively to his private executioner squad.

Thaxton! Thaxton, answer me! Vance screamed mentally into the private network. Report immediately! What happened to the subterranean vault?!

There was no voice. No response.

On his private interface screen, a single grim system notification flashed in pulsing crimson text.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

Unit Status: Captain Thaxton — Signal Lost / Erased from System

Unit Status: Executioner Squad 1 — Signal Lost / Erased from System

---

The Marquis’s breath caught in his throat. His face drained of all color until he looked like a corpse standing under the bright chandeliers.

Thaxton... his invincible S-rank butcher... was dead. Erased in less than two minutes inside the royal vault.

"No..." Vance whispered, absolute horror seizing his soul as he looked toward the shadowy arches of the high balcony. "No, this is impossible... Who is in the palace?!"

Meanwhile, out in the serene, moonlit gardens of the East Tower, the breeze carried the faint scent of night-blooming jasmine and damp stone.

Lyra stood beside her sister Elena on the marble terrace overlooking the central courtyard. Elena was wrapped in a warm wool cloak, her silver-white hair glowing softly under the moonlight. Though still recovering from three years of lethargy, her eyes were clear, bright, and filled with a profound sense of peace.

Step. Step.

Footsteps echoed softly from the shadowed archway leading down to the subterranean conduits.

Tsubaki’s hand instantly dropped to the hilt of his black katana, standing guard in front of the sisters. But the moment the faint violet glow of spatial mana flickered through the gloom, Tsubaki relaxed his stance and stepped back into the shadows.

Kaelen walked out into the moonlight, his dark coat billowing gently, with Ren strolling right beside him while casually tossing a glowing golden artifact up and down in his palm.

The Second Heavenly Seal.

Lyra’s breath hitched. Her eyes darted from the golden seal in Ren’s hand to Kaelen’s serene, unreadable face. She noticed the fresh, microscopic faint flecks of dark blood near the hem of his dark boots — blood that didn’t belong to him.

"Kaelen..." Lyra whispered, stepping forward with her heart pounding against her chest.

"Thaxton... did you...?"

Kaelen stopped in front of her. His violet eyes met hers, soft yet carrying an absolute, unshakeable mantle of cold justice.

"The executioner who drove you from your home is no more," Kaelen said smoothly, his voice echoing with quiet tenderness. "The debt of the Silverwing household has been settled in full."

Tears instantly welled in Lyra’s eyes. She pressed her hand against her mouth to choke back a quiet sob, a massive, painful boulder of three years’ worth of trauma, fear, and guilt finally melting away from her chest.

Elena reached out, taking her sister’s hand and holding it tightly, her own eyes glistening with quiet gratitude as she bowed her head respectfully toward Kaelen.

"Thank you, My Lord," Elena said softly, her voice melodious and steady. "You saved my life, and you restored my sister’s honor."

"I did what was necessary for those under my mantle," Kaelen replied calmly.

Ren wiped a streak of cold sweat from his forehead and grinned, tucking the Second Heavenly Seal securely into an encrypted spatial pouch at his waist.

"The king’s soul thread has been completely restored, too. Old King Alden is probably breathing on his own right now. The Marquis’s control network just collapsed like a house of cards."

Ren looked up toward the bright glass windows of the main ballroom, where distant murmurs of confusion were drifting out into the night.

"Speaking of the Marquis... he just took a massive system backlash straight to his brain. He knows something is wrong, but he has no idea who hit him."

Lyra wiped the tears from her cheeks, her expression hardening as her eyes flared with a fierce, noble resolve. She gripped the hilt of her holy blade.

"Kaelen... the Marquis is currently announcing my sister’s forced betrothal to his son in front of every high noble in the realm. What are your orders? Do we extract Elena and retreat to the Underworld base now?"

Elena looked at Kaelen as well, waiting for the command of the man who had effortlessly brought down the shadow executioners of the kingdom in a single night.

Kaelen looked up at the towering spires of the Royal Palace. A cold, dark smile touched his lips — a smile that promised absolute ruin to those who dared stand in his path.

"Retreat?" Kaelen murmured smoothly, his violet eyes burning with absolute sovereign authority. "We did not break into the heart of this capital merely to run away in the dark like thieves."

He turned to look at his gathered circle — Lyra, Elena, Ren, and Tsubaki.

"The Marquis wished to use tonight’s banquet to consolidate his stolen rule over this kingdom," Kaelen said, his voice dropping into a deep, commanding register that resonated with the very fabric of space around them. "It would be impolite of us to deny him a proper audience."

Ren’s eyes lit up with a wicked, crimson glint. "You want to crash the party?"

"We do not crash it," Kaelen corrected coldly. "We claim it. Tonight, the nobility of this realm will learn who truly rules the shadows."

Kaelen gestured toward the grand doors leading into the main palace corridor. "Ren, lock down every exit in the Grand Ballroom. No noble, no guard, and no member of House Vance leaves the hall without my permission."

"Consider it done," Ren chuckled, his fingers already speeding across a newly spawned holographic console as he began locking the palace’s external defense runes from the inside. "I’ll seal the gates tight."

"Tsubaki, secure the balcony arches. Eliminate any guard who attempts to summon reinforcement troops from the outer barracks."

"Understood, my lord," Tsubaki bowed, vanishing into the night like a flicker of black smoke.

Kaelen turned to Lyra and Elena, offering them a calm, reassuring nod. "Lyra, Elena. It is time for House Silverwing to take back what was stolen three years ago."

Lyra drew her holy sword halfway from its sheath, the silver blade shining with a bright, pristine holy light that reflected the fierce determination in her eyes. "I am with you, Kaelen. To the end."

"Then let us begin," Kaelen commanded.

---

Inside the Grand Ballroom, the atmosphere had devolved into tense, anxious murmurs.

Marquis Vance was still leaning heavily against the dais table, his face pale as he drank a glass of cold water brought by his terrified servants. His head was pounding with a dull, throbbing ache, but his mind was racing at dangerous speeds.

Thaxton is dead... The seal control is gone... Someone is inside the palace system! Vance thought frantically, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the table. I need to retreat to the East Barracks! I need to mobilize the Royal Knights before—

CLANG!

A heavy, metallic thud echoed through the massive ballroom as the heavy oak main doors suddenly slammed shut on their own.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Before the guards could react, giant crimson runic seals appeared across all twelve exit doors, locking the massive iron latches in place with absolute, unbreakable force.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Julian Vance screamed, drawing his rapier and pointing it at the doors. "Guards! Open those doors immediately!"

"My... My Lord!" a captain of the Royal Guard shouted in panic, frantically pressing his palm against the door’s crystal panel. "The security array has been inverted! The exit gates are locked from the outside! The system isn’t responding to royal authorization!"

The nobles panicked, women gasping and noblemen shouting as the grand chandeliers above began to flicker wildly, their bright golden light dimming into an eerie, deep violet hue.

Then, high up on the central royal balcony overlooking the entire ballroom, a calm, cold voice echoed through the silent, terrified hall — a voice that carried the weight of absolute cosmic authority.

"Marquis Vance."

Every head in the ballroom snapped upward toward the high balcony.

Standing against the pale moonlight filtering through the stained-glass arches stood a tall figure in a dark coat, his dark hair rustling softly in the mountain breeze, his galaxy-bright violet eyes looking down at the Marquis as if he were nothing more than an insect pinned to stone.

Beside him stood Lyra Silverwing, her holy sword drawn, and Elena Silverwing, alive, healthy, and radiating pristine silver light.

The Marquis’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, his breath completely catching in his throat as his body trembled uncontrollably.

"You..." Vance gasped, horror choking his voice as he recognized the young man standing above him. "Kaelen...! You survived..."

Kaelen looked down at the pale, trembling Marquis, a cold, serene smile gracing his lips as spatial mana coiled around his boots like black lightning.

"The banquet has just begun, Marquis," Kaelen said smoothly, his voice echoing in the ears of every noble in the room. "And your judgment has arrived."
