Chapter 145: 145: WILLIAM WAITS ON THE BENCH(2)
-----------------------------------------
After Coach Lincoln finished his serious and motivational talk, the players stood up from their wooden benches and went out together to do some light warm up exercises on the grass before the game starts.
The team walked through the long stadium tunnel in a single file, and they could hear the massive noise of the crowd echoing off the thick concrete walls.
As the players headed out of the tunnel and stepped onto the green pitch, the home fans shouted with pure joy and celebrated their favorite players with loud chants.
The whole stadium was painted in bright tangerine orange colors, and the loyal supporters waved their huge flags to welcome the squad to the field. The players smiled and clapped back at the happy crowd as they began their warm up routine on the fresh grass, showing their deep appreciation for the amazing support.
The coaching staff were the ones conducting the light exercise, and they blew their whistles to keep the players moving in a straight and organized line. The assistant coaches arranged small orange cones on the field and led the team through some quick stretching and short jogging sessions to loosen their tight muscles for the tough game.
After the light exercises, the strikers and midfielders moved closer to the penalty area, and they started a fast shooting drill to test their accuracy in front of the goal.
They took turns kicking the heavy leather ball toward the net with great power, and the goalkeeper coach conducted a special warm up for the goalies too. Walker practiced his quick diving and caught several fast shots to prepare his hands and reflexes for the difficult match ahead.
The bright stadium lights shone down on the busy players as they completed their final stretches and passing drills. Then the match was about to start, so the players jogged off the field and went back into the quiet dressing room to change out of their tracksuits and into their official match kit.
The room was filled with a focused silence as the players pulled their bright orange jerseys over their heads and tied their football boots tight to avoid slipping on the grass.
They strapped on their hard shin guards to protect their lower legs from heavy tackles, and they drank cold water from their bottles to stay hydrated for the long battle. Now they are well prepared for the challenge, and they moved out of the locker room to the stadium tunnel so as to line up next to the opponent.
The two teams stood side by side in the narrow hallway, and the referee checked their metal studs and the match ball to ensure everything was fair and safe.
While the starting eleven waited for the official signal to walk out, the players on the bench passed by the tunnel to sit on their bench near the touchline. William wore his warm jacket over his match kit, and he walked alongside Eric and the other substitute players toward the dugout area.
They took their seats on the comfortable padded chairs under the transparent roof of the bench, and they watched the stadium fill up with even more excited fans.
Sitting on the bench gave William a much better perspective of the massive stadium, and now William have a clearer view of the beautiful moment. He could see the thousands of fans singing the club anthem in perfect unison, and the electric atmosphere made his young heart beat fast inside his strong chest.
He felt proud to be part of this amazing family, and he watched the big digital screen located above the stadium stands display the team logos. Suddenly, the television cameraman walked past the dugout, and the camera was put right on his face to broadcast his image to the watching world.
The big screen displayed William's face to the whole stadium, and when the fans saw him, they cheered loud and chanted his familiar name with great passion. The loud support from the home crowd touched his young heart, and William felt so emotional as he remembered his tough journey back to this beautiful coastal city.
He felt a lump form in his throat, but he took a deep breath and held his tears because he did not want to cry on live television. He gave a bright smile and raised his right hand to wave at the loyal supporters, and he knew he was ready to give his all when his time came to play.
A few minutes later, the stadium announcer called out the names of the starting players, and loud music played from the big speakers. The players entered the pitch in a straight line while holding the hands of young mascots, and they lined up in the center of the field to shake hands with the opponents.
The crowd roared as the team captains exchanged colorful club pennants and flipped a coin with the match officials. The players took their positions on the green grass, and the referee blew the whistle which signaled the beginning of the match.
Now the match had started, and the visiting team showed their physical strength right away from the center circle. Leeds United came prepared to fight for a victory, but Blackpool also had made more preparations to defend their home turf and win the important game.
Leeds United kicked off the ball and kept good possession in the middle of the pitch, and their midfielders passed the ball around to find an open space in the defense.
A Leeds midfielder tried to send a long pass to his fast striker, but Brooks read the game well and made a crucial interception to win the ball back for his team. Brooks passed the ball to Reed, and Blackpool started a fast counter attack to surprise the visiting defenders.
Reed ran down the right flank with great speed and made a smart overlap past the opposing fullback who tried to block his path. Reed reached the edge of the pitch and delivered a dangerous cross toward the crowded penalty area, and Morgan jumped high to head the ball toward the net.
However, a tall Leeds defender made a desperate clearance to push the heavy ball out of play, and the referee pointed to the corner flag to award Blackpool their first corner of the game.
Alonso ran to the corner flag to take the kick, and the tall center backs moved into the opponent's box to fight for the high ball. Alonso whipped the ball toward the near post with a lot of curve, but the Leeds goalkeeper jumped and punched the ball away with his strong fists.
The match intensity grew stronger and at the 5th minutes, Leeds United recovered the loose ball and tried to launch their own quick attack from the backline to catch Blackpool off guard.
Their fast winger ran down the left side of the pitch and tried to cut inside the penalty area to shoot, but Johnson stood his ground and made a clean tackle to steal the ball away from his feet. The game moved at a fast pace, and both teams fought hard for possession in the center of the pitch as the midfielders clashed.
At the 12th minutes, a Leeds striker made a fast run behind the defensive line, and his midfield teammate passed the ball straight to his feet. The striker took a quick shot and scored a goal, but the assistant referee raised his flag for a clear offside because the striker started his run too early.
The goal was canceled by the main referee, and the home fans cheered with massive relief as the score remained tied at zero.
Now Leeds were making a huge progress and tackle.
Blackpool restarted the game from the back, and Walker played a short pass to Johnson to build a new attack. Johnson looked up and sent a long diagonal pass to the left side where Alonso was making a fast run.
Alonso controlled the ball and sprinted down the touchline, and he delivered a low cross into the box for Fernandes. A Leeds defender tried to make a sliding clearance, but he missed the ball, and Fernandes shot the ball with his left foot.
The ball hit the side netting, and the fans groaned because it was a close chance to take the lead. The match continued with high intensity, and in the 20th minutes, Coleman worked hard in the midfield to stop sudden attacks before they reached the defenders.
Coleman made a brilliant interception near the halfway line, and he passed the ball to Barco who pushed forward into the opponent's half.
Barco saw Morgan making a run toward the near post, and he tried to slip a through ball past the defenders.
However, the Leeds captain made a strong block to stop the dangerous pass from reaching the striker. William watched this intense action from the bench, and he studied the small gaps in the defense so he could exploit them later when he enters the pitch.
