Chapter 144: 144: WILLIAM WAITS ON THE BENCH
It was a bright Saturday morning, and it was finally the long-awaited matchday against Leeds United. The excited players gathered early at the quiet Squires Gate training ground to start their busy day.
The morning sky was clear, and the fresh air felt good against their skin as they walked into the main building. The players met at the training facility first so they could move together as a united squad to the famous Bloomfield Road stadium for the big match.
The hardworking kit man had made beautiful clothes for the travel, and he placed them neatly on the benches in the dressing room. These special clothes were smart black tracksuits with the bright tangerine club badge stitched on the chest.
They prepared their minds for the tough match ahead, and everyone looked like a true professional athlete ready for a big battle. The matching clothes made them feel like a big family, and they were proud to represent the beautiful coastal city. The players zipped up their jackets and picked up their small bags to prepare for the short trip.
The important match will start in the next two hours, and the players are already walking outside and entering the massive team bus. The large bus was painted in the bright club colors, and the engine hummed as the driver waited for everyone to get on board.
William was also with the squad, and he climbed the steps of the bus with a huge smile on his face. The team bus had comfortable leather seats, and the windows were tinted to give them privacy from the busy traffic.
He sat down near a large glass window, and he felt well prepared to make his Premier League debut today. He had worked hard during the recent training sessions, and his young body felt strong and ready for the physical challenge.
As the heavy bus drove through the busy streets of the city, William looked out the window and saw many local people wearing the team jerseys. The short journey from the training ground to the stadium was smooth, and it gave the players time to relax their minds.
William listened to some calm music on his phone, and he pictured himself running on the green pitch and making great passes. He wanted to show his true talent to the world, and he felt no fear in his heart.
When they got to the Bloomfield Road stadium, the bus parked near the main entrance where the officials stood. William stepped off the bus, and he noticed that the setting was different from the one he had seen in the Championship division last season.
The massive stadium looked much bigger and brighter, and the security around the area was tight. The towering floodlights were already switched on, and they illuminated the sky above the massive arena.
The advertising boards near the gates were now shiny and digital, and the television cameras were placed in every corner of the ground to broadcast the game.
He knew that the Premier League was a huge stage for any young footballer, and the improved stadium setting proved that they were playing at the highest level of English football. The bright lights of the stadium made the whole place look like a massive entertainment arena, and William felt a rush of pure excitement run through his veins.
The players alighted from the bus, and they walked toward the stadium tunnel in a straight line.
When they were going to the dressing room, thousands of loyal fans were waiting behind the metal barricades to show their amazing support. Many children wore the bright orange jerseys, and they waved small flags in the air.
The fans were shouting their names with great joy as the players moved one after the other into the building. The loud cheers echoed through the air, and huge colorful banners were displayed too. Some of the big flags had welcome messages for William and the other new players, and the sight made the squad feel loved.
The supporters chanted club songs, and the loud noise made the players feel brave and strong for the upcoming battle. William smiled and waved his hand at the happy crowd before walking into the long tunnel. In the locker room, the players sat down on the soft wooden benches in front of their personal lockers.
They arranged their football boots, put on their thick match socks, and waited for the coach. They needed to know the starting lineup and the tactics they will use against the visiting team. The room was quiet because everyone was thinking about the big game and focusing their minds on securing a victory.
The heavy wooden door opened, and Coach Lincoln entered the quiet locker room with his tactical clipboard in his hand. He wore a neat suit instead of his usual training gear, and this formal look proved the high importance of the match.
He looked so focused, and his face showed pure determination as he walked straight to the center of the room. He stood in the middle of the seated players, and he looked around at their faces to make sure he had their full attention. Then, he spoke in a firm and serious voice to motivate his squad before the game.
"This is matchday two, and it is a wonderful day to let the Premier League know that we are not here to joke. We suffered a loss in our first game, so this must be our first win of the season. I want cooperation and total commitment this afternoon from every single player in this room. We must fight for every single ball and play as a united family on that pitch. I want to see pure passion and hard work, so that when the referee blows the final whistle, we will all celebrate our first win in the league together."
After Coach Lincoln said that, the players exchanged positive glances with each other, and they felt a strong wave of confidence fill the room. They nodded their heads in agreement, and they waited for the next thing the manager had to say. The inspirational speech changed the quiet mood into a strong desire to win the match.
Coach Lincoln brought out the large tactics board and placed it on a stand in front of the players. He picked up a black marker and announced his starting XI by writing their names on the white board. He wanted everyone to know their exact positions for the afternoon match.
"Walker will start as the goalkeeper today," the coach said as he wrote the name near the goalpost drawing.
"Johnson and Brooks, you will pair up as the center backs to protect the goal and build our play from the back. Reed and Alonso will play in the right and left side as our fullbacks to cover the wide areas.
For the midfield, Coleman, Barco, and Bennet will start and control the center of the pitch against their strong midfielders. Finally, Fernandes our captain, along with Valentino and Morgan, will lead the attack as the front three."
The players who heard their names called out felt a surge of pride, and they focused on the board to understand their specific roles. They knew they carried the heavy responsibility of starting the match on a positive note.
After naming the starting eleven, the manager looked at his notes and announced the substitute players for the day.
"Now for the substitute bench, we have Henderson, William, Cole, Harris, Eric, and Ibrahim. I need all of you to be ready to step on the pitch when I call your names during the game."
After this announcement, William found himself on the bench, but he didn't feel sad about the manager's decision. Instead, he felt more happy that he still made the matchday squad after just returning to the club. He felt proud to wear his new number fourteen jersey under his tracksuit.
Then the coach gave individual instructions to them before they went out for the final warm-up on the grass. He pointed his marker at the defenders and spoke like he is very serious with what he is saying.
"Johnson and Brooks, the two center backs should coordinate the backline and midfield. You must talk to each other and keep the defensive shape tight. Do not let their strikers run behind you.
Alonso and Reed, you should help the forwards by running up the wings, but you must also remember your main job. You must help the defenders when we lose the ball, and do not leave empty spaces behind you."
He then looked at the three starting midfielders and gave them their strict orders for the central battle.
"Coleman, Barco, and Bennet, the midfield should try and stop sudden attacks before it gets to the defenders. That means, they should always come back to help the defense too. You are the engine of this team, and you must also give the attackers accurate passes to score goals."
Lastly, he gave the attackers instructions to secure the victory. "Fernandes, Valentino, and Morgan, I want you to shoot at sight when you see the goal. Do not joke around with the ball inside the penalty box. Be ruthless and finish your chances."
The players listened to every word, and they stood up together, ready to conquer the football pitch and make their loyal fans proud.
