Chapter 141: 141: THE SHOCKING NEWS
William and Eric sat comfortably on the soft wooden benches inside the bright changing room.
The large room was very quiet because they were the first two people to arrive for the morning session, and the clean smell of fresh laundry hung gently in the air.
To pass the early time, they quickly started a nice conversation. Both William and Eric talked about football and what they are good at on the green pitch. William leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. He asked Eric,
"Can you tell me what you can do and also the club you came from"
Eric responded and said that he was a defensive midfielder who loved to tackle hard and intercept passes before the opponents could build an attack. He mentioned that his main strength was reading the flow of the game from the middle of the field, so he could protect the central defenders behind him.
Eric liked breaking up the play and winning the ball back for his team, making sure the midfield was always secure.
He also said that he come from Fulham football club.
They shared interesting stories about their past youth academies, and they found out that they both shared a deep passion for winning tough matches.
This simple chat helped break the morning ice, and it made Eric feel much more relaxed on his very first day at the new club. William felt happy to share his own experiences, and he wanted to make sure Eric did not feel lonely in a strange environment.
As they discussed their football skills and favorite moments on the pitch, the heavy wooden door of the changing room swung open.
The rest of the players came in, and they entered the room one after the other with loud voices. The morning silence was quickly replaced by cheerful laughter and happy chatter as more teammates arrived.
The teammates were so happy to see William again, and they rushed over to his locker with huge smiles on their faces, dropping their bags on the floor. They all exchanged pleasantries, and every single player gave William a warm hug to welcome him back to the permanent squad.
They patted his strong back, ruffled his hair, and told him how much they missed his presence during the long summer break. As the players entered the room and settled down, they also made sure to greet the new boy sitting in the corner.
They gave a warm hug to Eric as well, and they welcomed him into the Blackpool family with open arms and kind words. Eric felt a great sense of relief, and his nervous feelings faded away as he shook hands with the veteran players.
However, as William looked around the crowded and noisy room, he noticed that Kyle was not inside the changing room with the rest of the group.
William scanned the shiny room one more time to be sure, and he thought in his mind that Kyle had probably been doing extra drills on the pitch. Kyle always loved to arrive early to practice his free kicks and and passes, so that he could be the best and also make his name known to all fans, so William assumed his teammates who refused to make friend with him was just busy working hard outside on the cold grass.
The changing room became very busy as the players unpacked their heavy sports bags and put on their training kits. The sound of unzipping bags, dropping boots, and locker doors shutting filled the air.
The team captain, Fernandes, stood up from his seat near the center of the room, fixing his training jacket. He clapped his hands together to get everyone's attention, and he encouraged his team to dress fast for the morning session.
Fernandes raised his voice over the loud chatter and spoke like a true leader.
"Alright boys, listen to me and let us speed things up this morning! The coach and the staffs are waiting for us on the pitch right now, and we have a very big game against Leeds United coming up this weekend. We need to be sharp and focused," Fernandes said with a firm tone.
"If you have already kitted up and put your boots on, move outside immediately so we can start our warm-ups and avoid wasting any precious time."
His voice was encouraging, and it made the players move faster as they pulled on their bright jerseys. Coleman, the veteran midfielder, was also doing the same thing from the other side of the large room. Coleman pointed toward the main door and added his own words of motivation to push the squad forward.
"You heard the captain, lads! Let us show some good energy and total commitment today," Coleman said with a big clap of his hands.
"Do not keep Coach Lincoln waiting in the cold morning breeze. Grab your water bottles, tie your boot laces tight, and let us get out there to work hard for the badge!"
The players nodded their heads in agreement, and they quickly finished changing into their training uniforms, knowing the manager hated latecomers. They respected Fernandes and Coleman, and they always listened when the older players gave clear instructions.
William finished tying his white and gold football boots, and he grabbed his personal water bottle from the top shelf of his locker. He turned his head to Eric and motioned for the new boy to come along with him.
Eric quickly grabbed his own bottle and followed William outside, sticking close to the young winger as they navigated through the busy hallway. They walked side by side, and William gave Eric a few simple tips about how the manager runs the morning practice and what passing drills to expect first.
Fernandes and Coleman stood near the door as the younger players filed out of the room, and they saw how Eric stayed right beside William. The two older leaders observed this interaction, and they were happy because William actually behaved like a leader.
Even though William was still a young player who just signed a permanent contract, he was taking the time and effort to guide a brand new teammate. Fernandes and Coleman smiled at each other, knowing that supporting a new player was a very important part of building a strong and united squad.
They appreciated seeing William take on this mature role without anyone asking him to do it. It showed them that William was growing not just as a talented footballer, but also as a responsible young man who cared about the success of the entire team.
They remembered when William first arrived as a shy loan player, and seeing his new confidence made the veterans feel very proud. William and Eric continued down the long corridor together, and they chatted about the upcoming passing drills as they made their way toward the green training ground.
They pushed open the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway, and they went out on the pitch where the morning air was crisp and fresh. The huge green field looked beautiful under the rising sun, and the white painted lines were bright and clear.
Coach Lincoln and his assistant were standing near the center circle, and they were talking quietly while holding their tactical clipboards. The coaching staff had already set up colorful plastic cones, tall training poles, and small nets for the daily session.
But when they saw the players stepping out of the main building and walking onto the grass, they stopped their private conversation. Coach Lincoln raised a silver whistle to his lips, and he blew the whistle loudly, signaling that he wanted everyone's attention right away.
The sharp sound echoed across the open field, and the players stopped chatting and jogged over to the center circle. As the large group gathered around, Coach Lincoln saw Eric standing close with William.
The manager smiled slightly at this nice sight, pleased to see his new boy fitting in so well with the rest of the squad. Then, the coach focused his eyes back on the entire group and put on a serious face.
The players surrounded him in a tight circle, and they waited for his morning instructions in pure silence. The training ground became very quiet, and the wind blew gently against their faces. Coach Lincoln cleared his throat, crossed his strong arms over his chest, and looked around at the faces of his players. Lincoln said,
"I believe you all heard the news yesterday night?"
William blinked his eyes in confusion. He looked around at his teammates, and he realized that everyone else seemed to know exactly what the manager was talking about. Their faces looked serious and deep in thought.
William didn't know anything about the news, and he was completely shocked. He stood frozen on the grass, wondering what massive event had happened while he was busy enjoying the beach with his friends. The heavy suspense filled the cold air, leaving William desperate for an answer.
