Chapter 90: 90: THE TRUTH BEHIND REED'S HATRED

The morning light crept slowly through the gaps in the curtains, but it did not bring the usual sense of peace to William's bedroom. Instead, he woke up feeling as though a heavy weight was pressing down on his chest, and as soon as he tried to shift his legs, a sharp, white-hot flash of pain erupted from his left ankle.

He let out a soft groan and fell back against the pillows, staring up at the ceiling while the events of the previous night played through his mind like a recurring movie. He was exhausted, not just from the physical battle against Coventry City, but from the mental strain of the conversation he had shared with Fernandes in the car. The captain's question about his future at Chelsea was still ringing in his ears, making him feel caught between two different worlds that were pulling him in opposite directions.

Despite the throbbing in his leg, William knew that he couldn't afford to spend the day wallowing in bed because he had a mission to complete. He needed to find a way to recover quickly so he could be fit for the next set of matches, and he also had a very important meeting to attend.

The mystery of why Reed had asked to see him was like a puzzle piece that didn't quite fit, and the curiosity was starting to outweigh the physical discomfort he was feeling. He slowly sat up, gritting his teeth as he swung his feet to the floor, and he used the edge of his nightstand to steady himself.

Every step toward the door was a struggle, yet his determination kept him moving forward through the quiet apartment.

He limped down the short hallway, the silence of the morning making the sound of his uneven footsteps seem incredibly loud. When he reached Reed's door, he paused for a moment to catch his breath and straighten his shirt, feeling a wave of nervous energy wash over him.

He had spent the last few hours imagining this encounter, and in most of his thoughts, he pictured Kyle standing right beside Reed with a sneer on his face. He assumed that the two of them were finally going to confront him together to settle the unfriendliness that had plagued the locker room for weeks.

Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand and knocked softly, waiting for the inevitable tension that usually followed any interaction with the veteran players.

The door swung open almost immediately, and Reed stood there, looking much more relaxed than William had ever seen him. He gestured for William to come inside, and as the younger boy stepped into the room, he couldn't help but glance around the corners, searching for Kyle's shadow.

To his immense surprise, the room was empty and quiet, with only a single chair pulled out as if Reed had been expecting him to arrive alone. Reed closed the door and leaned against it, crossing his arms over his chest while he watched William struggle to find a comfortable way to sit down.

"You look like you've been through a war, kid," Reed started, his voice lacking the usual sharp edge of sarcasm that William had grown to expect.

"I saw the way you went down yesterday, and I honestly didn't think you'd be walking this morning. Before we get into anything else, I want to commend you for your hard work on the pitch. The quality you've brought to this midfield is something we haven't had in a long time, and you were the reason we walked away with those three points."

William blinked in confusion, his mouth falling open slightly because he was genuinely stunned to hear such high praise from the man who had spent months making his life miserable.

He had prepared himself for an argument or a cold lecture, but instead, he was receiving a compliment that felt sincere and heavy with meaning.

"I... I don't know what to say, Reed," William stammered, feeling the heat rise to his cheeks. "I didn't think you liked my style of play at all. I thought you wanted me gone."

Reed let out a dry, short laugh and walked over to the window, staring out at the training pitches in the distance.

"I know you're wondering about the change in my behavior, and honestly, you deserve an explanation," he said, turning back to face William with a somber expression.

"When you first arrived, I didn't see a talented teammate; I saw a newbie who was coming in to take my spot. I've spent four years at this club, bleeding for this badge and fighting in the mud, and then suddenly, a kid from Chelsea shows up and gets the starting role. It made me feel downgraded, and because you're only here on loan, I figured you didn't actually care about Blackpool."

He paused, allowing his words to sink in, and William felt a strange pang of sympathy for the veteran player.

"I thought you were just using us as a training ground," Reed continued, his voice dropping to a lower tone. "I assumed you would play for a few months, get your stats up, and then run back to your big club while we were left to deal with the fallout.

I even thought you had manipulated Coach Lincoln, using your Chelsea pedigree to make him trust you more than those of us who have been here through the hard times. I saw your arrival as a betrayal of the loyalty I had shown the club, so I decided to go against you from the very start."

William listened intently, finally seeing the situation from Reed's perspective, and he realized that the hostility hadn't been about him as a person, but about what he represented.

"I understand why you felt that way," William said softly, looking down at his bandaged ankle. "I never meant to disrespect the work you've put in here. I just wanted to prove that I could help the team grow."

"And you did prove it," Reed replied, nodding his head slowly.

"I've been watching you closely, even when I was acting like a jerk. I saw that you weren't playing for fame or to catch the eye of the Chelsea scouts; you were playing for the badge. You put your body on the line yesterday for a club that isn't even your permanent home, and that takes a level of loyalty that most players don't have. You're a sweet person, William, and I realized that I was wrong to treat you like an enemy just because I was afraid of losing my place."

A sense of relief washed over William, and he felt a massive weight lift off his shoulders as the tension between them finally dissolved.

"Thank you for saying that, Reed. It means more to me than you know," he said, offering a genuine smile.

"I promise that I will continue to be respectful of your history here, and I'll keep working as hard as I can to make sure we get promoted together."

Reed returned the nod, but then his face darkened, and the atmosphere in the room shifted back toward a more serious note.

"There's something else you need to be careful about," he warned, leaning in closer toward William. "I want you to be careful with Kyle and ignore his behavior from now on. He's going to do much more of cold looks and ignore you in the dressing room. He's bitter, William, and he isn't going to change his mind just because I did."

William felt a cold prickle of intuition on the back of his neck, because he had always known that Kyle was the primary source of the negativity, but hearing it from Reed made it feel much more dangerous.

"I thought you two were close," William whispered, his eyes wide with surprise. "You were always behind him since the day I arrived. Why are you telling me this now?"

Reed sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, looking a bit ashamed of his past actions. "I actually supported Kyle because we shared the same frustrations, and I thought he was looking out for the veterans of the squad. However, I later found out that his motives weren't about the team at all; they were just about his own ego. Even without relating with you very well over the last few months, I could see who the better person was, and I realized that I was following the wrong leader. You have the heart this team needs, while Kyle is only looking out for himself."

William sat back in his chair, his mind racing with the implications of what Reed had just revealed. He had gained a powerful ally in Reed, but he had also confirmed that Kyle was a lingering threat that wouldn't go away easily.

The internal politics of the team were proving to be just as difficult to navigate as the matches on the pitch, and he knew he would have to be incredibly smart to keep his focus where it belonged.

"I'll be careful," William promised, his voice steady despite the nerves fluttering in his stomach. "And I'm glad we finally talked, Reed. It feels like I can finally breathe again."

As William stood up to leave, struggling once more with his injury, Reed stepped forward to give him a supportive pat on the shoulder.

They had started the morning as rivals who barely spoke, but they were ending it with a newfound understanding that would change the dynamic of the entire team. William limped back toward his room, his mind full of questions about his future and the challenges ahead, yet for the first time in a long time, he didn't feel like he was fighting the battle all by himself.
