Chapter 75: 75: THE SILENT GRIND BEFORE THE STORM
-------------------
As the days of examination were approaching with a speed that felt both exciting and terrifying, William and his friends were preparing so hard that they barely had time to think about anything other than their textbooks and lecture notes.
The library had become their second home, and while the rest of the world seemed to move on with its usual business, William, Stone, and Adams remained locked in a fierce battle with complex equations and scientific theories. They knew that these final exams were the gateway to their future, so they spent every waking hour quizzing each other and solving past questions until their brains felt heavy with knowledge.
William was determined to have great success in the examination because he wanted to prove that a professional athlete could also be
an academic star, and he refused to let his focus slip even for a single second.
While William was buried in his studies, his teammates at Blackpool were looking for a way to win their upcoming matches and maintain their high position in the league table without their young star.
William suspected that Kyle, Harris, and Reed would be doing extra drills on the training ground, and he knew in his heart that they were working harder than ever so that the team would not miss his presence on the pitch.
It was a painful thought to imagine his rivals
excelling in his absence, and he realized that they were likely trying to prove to Coach Lincoln that the squad was perfectly fine without him. This realization added a different kind of pressure to his life, yet he chose to channel that anxiety into his books while he waited for his chance to return to the grass.
William, on the other hand, decided not to relax even though the coach had given him a break to focus on his studies, and consequently, he developed a very strict routine to balance his two lives.
After reading his books for several grueling hours and filling his mind with physics formulas, he would pack his training gear and head out to the local pitch to train himself in the quiet evening air. He understood perfectly well that he wasn't training for the next match on the schedule, but he was training for the future because he wanted to remain fit and sharp at all times.
He didn't want to return to the team after his exams only to find that his touch had become heavy or his stamina had faded, so he treated these solo sessions with the same seriousness as a professional cup final.
The personal training was not particularly interesting or fun because there was no one watching him or giving him instructions, and it was often just him running up and down the length of the empty field while the wind whistled through the goalposts.
In a normal team session, he would have Coach Lincoln shouting encouragement or Coleman giving him tactical advice, but now he had to be his own coach and his own motivator. He didn't let himself feel lonely or
discouraged by the silence, and instead, he put even more work into these personal drills to ensure he was pushing his body to its limits.
He performed dhuttle runs until his lungs burned, and he practiced his ball control by
weaving through imaginary defenders, pretending that he was navigating through a
crowded midfield in a high-stakes league match.
During these solitary hours, he spent a lot of time imagining the threats from Kyle and the other opposition he faced within his own locker room, and he used these dark thoughts as a powerful motivation not to relent at all. Every time his legs felt heavy or he wanted to stop and rest, he would picture Kyle's arrogant smirk or remember the way Reed had plotted against him in the shadows.
He knew that if he allowed himself to become weak, his rivals would be the first ones to celebrate his downfall and take his spot permanently. Therefore, he used their hatred as fuel for his fire, running faster and training harder because he wanted to be ready to reclaim his territory the moment his exams were over.
He also thought deeply about the people who truly believed in him, like Robert, Coach Tuchel, and his father, and he knew they would be incredibly proud if he became a great player and a successful student.
He didn't want to let them down after everything they had sacrificed for him, so he pushed himself beyond his physical limits during every solo session. He visualized the transition phases of a real match, practicing how he would receive a pass under pressure and deliver a perfectly timed passes and crosses to a teammate.
He worked on his interception techniques by throwing the ball against a wall and reacting to its unpredictable bounce, and he practiced his clearances to ensure his defensive skills remained as sharp as his attacking flair.
---------------------------
One evening, after finishing a particularly exhausting series of sprints, he dtood in the middle of the pitch and practiced his crossing technique, imagining Morgan waiting in the box for a delivery. He focused on hitting the near post with precision, and then he would quickly transition into a defensive posture to
simulate a counter-attack from the opposition.
He spent a long time working on his one-two pass combinations by using the concrete wall of the equipment shed, ensuring that his first touch was soft and his return pass was crisp. Even without a team around him, he was playing a full ninety-minute match in his head, and he refused to settle for anything less than perfection in every movement he made.
As the sun began to set and the shadows grew long over the grass, William finally decided to call it a day, his body soaked in sweat and his muscles vibrating with fatigue. He walked back to his room with a sense of quiet satisfaction, knowing that while his rivals were sleeping or relaxing, he had gained a tiny bit of an edge over them.
He reached his apartment and took a quick, cold shower to soothe his aching limbs, and then he sat down on the edge of his bed to check the upcoming schedule on his smartphone. He opened the official league app and saw the next fixture staring back at him:
Blackpool vs.Portsmouth
Coming up on Saturday the second day at Bloomfield Road, the home stadium of Blackpool FC.
A wave of mixed emotions washed over him as he stared at the screen because he knew that he wouldn't be playing in this important match.
He realized that Portsmouth would be a difficult opponent that would test the team's defense with a high-press system, and he felt a sharp pang of regret that he wouldn't be there to help Coleman control the middle of the park.
However, he also knew that his primary responsibility right now was to his education, and he made a firm decision that he would go to the stadium to support the team from the stands.
He wanted his teammates to see that he was still part of the family, even if he was currently fighting a different kind of battle in the examination hall.
The thought of the upcoming match stayed in his mind as he put his phone away and prepared for another hour of light reading before bed. He imagined the roar of the crowd at Bloomfield Road and the feeling of the vibration under his feet when the fans started chanting, and he promised himself that he would return to that atmosphere stronger than ever.
He knew that the road to the Premier League
was long and full of obstacles, but he was prepared to navigate through every one of them with the same tactical intelligence he used on the pitch.
He felt a sense of peace as he realized that he was doing everything in his power to succeed in both of his worlds, and he knew that his mentors would be proud of his discipline.
Finally, the exhaustion from the day's studying and training began to take its toll, and his eyelids felt as heavy as lead as he lay down on his pillow. He didn't have the energy to worry about Jamal's plots or Kyle's threats anymore,
and he allowed his mind to drift into a deep, dreamless sleep.
He had pushed himself to the limit, and his body was now demanding the rest it needed to
recover for the next day of academic and physical toil. As he fell asleep, the image of the Blackpool crest was the last thing he saw in his mind, a symbol of the dream he was fighting for every single day. He was a warrior, a student, and a hero in the making, and he knew that when he woke up, he would be one step closer to his ultimate goal.
The match against Portsmouth was coming, and although he would be a spectator this time, his heart was still very much in the
game. He was ready for whatever the future held, and with that final thought, he drifted off into a well-earned rest.
