Chapter 74: 74: THE TRAP IS ALREADY SET
------------------------
The early morning sun rose through the high library windows, and while the rest of the campus was still slowly waking up, William was already wide awake and filled with a sharp sense of purpose.
He had spent the previous night dreaming of tactical plays and biology diagrams, and as soon as his alarm clock chirped, he reached for his phone to call Stone and Adams. He knew that their final exams were the only thing standing between him and a full return to the
football pitch, so he invited them to meet at the school library to tackle their most difficult subjects together.
They agreed to meet at the large circular table in the back corner, which was a quiet area surrounded by rows of dusty reference books that made the perfect fortress for their intense study session.
William was the first to arrive, and as he set his heavy backpack down, he began to organize his pens, notebooks, and a thick textbook that focused specifically on advanced physics and mathematics. A few minutes later, Stone and Adams walked in with tired eyes but determined expressions, and they immediately pulled out their chairs to begin the day's academic drill.
They decided to start with physics, focusing on the complex laws of motion and the formulas for calculating force and velocity, which was a subject that often left them feeling overwhelmed.
They started solving various practice questions from past exam papers, and they made a pact to teach each other the hardest concepts so that no one was left behind in the struggle for academic success.
Whenever Stone looked confused by a specific equation involving gravitational pull, William would go and patiently put him through the steps until the logic finally clicked in his friend's mind.
They worked in a rhythmic, synchronized manner that was very similar to a midfield passing drill, where the flow of information moved smoothly from one person to the next. Adams was particularly strong at mathematics, so when William found himself stuck on a difficult calculus problem, Adams took the lead and explained the derivation of
the formula with such clarity that William felt a surge of relief.
The three friends were not naturally the top students in the class, but they were working
with a level of intensity that suggested they wanted to reach the very summit of their potential. They knew that their future careers depended on these results, and consequently, they treated every solved equation like a hard-earned goal on the pitch.
While this academic drill was going on in the quiet corner of the library, a familiar and unwelcome figure entered the room with a heavy, rhythmic stride. Jamal, who had once been William's fiercest rival during the football trials, walked in with a stack of books tucked under his arm, and his eyes immediately
scanned the room for a place to sit.
He saw William and his friends huddled
together in deep concentration, and a dark, bitter scowl instantly formed on his face as the memories of his past defeat came rushing back. Jamal was still incredibly angry because William had won the trial and taken the spotlight that Jamal felt belonged to him, and he was still desperately looking for a way to
get revenge and make William pay for his success.
He stood near the entrance for a long moment, watching the way William was leading his friends through their studies, and the sight only fueled the fire of jealousy that had been burning in his chest for weeks.
Jamal eventually chose a table that was only a few rows away, and as he sat down, he began to stare at William with a predatory gaze that was filled with pure, unfiltered malice. He wanted William to feel his presence, and he hoped that his hostile staring would be enough to break William's focus and make him
fail his practice questions.
William, however, was much smarter and more
disciplined than Jamal expected, and he immediately understood the look on Jamal's face without even having to look up from his notebook. He could feel the heat of Jamal's glare burning into the side of his head, but he made a conscious decision to ignore him completely, acting as if the bully didn't even exist in the same room.
This silent rejection made Jamal even more angry, because it was not the first time William had used his calm composure to win a mental battle, and Jamal felt as if he were being treated like a ghost who had no power to
disturb the peace.
Jamal's grip on his pen tightened until his knuckles turned white, and as he pretended to read his own textbook, his mind was actually racing with dark and manipulative thoughts.
He realized that he could not beat William on the football pitch, and it seemed that he might not be able to beat him in the classroom either, so he decided that he needed to find a different way to destroy his rival.
He began to think of a plan to punish William by doing something terrible terrible to him something that would tarnish his reputation and make the entire school lose their respect for him. Jamal knew that William was loved
by many people, including the coaches, the teachers, and the other students, and he hated that popularity with every fiber of his being. He wanted to find a way to turn that love into hate, and he believed that if he could frame William for a serious mistake, he could finally see the "star boy" fall from grace.
As the hours passed, William continued to lead Stone and Adams through their physics problems, and he felt a sense of quiet victory as they successfully solved a particularly difficult set of mathematics questions.
They were making great progress, and the bond between the three friends was growing stronger with every shared answer, yet William could still feel the lingering threat of Jamal's presence nearby. He didn't know exactly what Jamal was thinking, but he knew that a cornered and bitter enemy was capable of anything, so he remained alert while he continued to teach his friends.
The atmosphere in the library was a strange mix of academic focus and hidden tension, and the quiet scratching of pens on paper was the only sound that broke the stillness of the room.
Jamal watched them pack up their things a few hours later, and as he saw William sharing a laugh with Stone and Adams, he felt a sharp jab of resentment in his gut. He realized that simply staring at William was not enough to break him, and consequently, he knew he had to be more creative and more dangerous with his next move.
He began to visualize a scenario where William would be accused of something so shameful that even Coach Lincoln and Mr. Clement would have no choice but to turn their backs on him. Jamal wanted to make William pay for
every goal he had scored and every bit of praise he had received, and he was willing to wait for the perfect moment to strike.
He watched as the three friends walked toward the exit, and he made a silent vow that he would find a way to make William's upcoming exam period the most miserable time of his life.
William, however, was trying his best to keep his mind on the physics formulas, but the reality of his situation kept creeping back into his thoughts like a persistent shadow. He knew that he would not be allowed to play for the club until after his exams were finished, and this realization felt like a heavy stone sitting in the bottom of his stomach.
It pained him to know that while he was stuck in the library or the exam hall, Kyle and some of his other teammates would be more than happy to take his position on the pitch and prove that the team could win without him. He could almost hear Kyle's arrogant laughter in the locker room, and he knew that every minute he spent away from the grass was an
opportunity for his rivals to bury his reputation.
Along with the stress of losing his spot in the starting eleven, William was also deeply worried about Jamal's constant presence and the dark, calculating looks he kept receiving from across the library.
He didn't know what Jamal was planning to do or how he intended to take his revenge, and the uncertainty of the threat was almost more exhausting than the study itself. He felt as if he
were fighting a war on two fronts, with Kyle threatening his football career at the training ground and Jamal threatening his academic peace at school.
As he walked out of the library with Stone and Adams, William took a deep breath of the cool air, trying to find the courage to keep moving forward despite the shadows closing in on him. He was a warrior, but even a warrior had to be
careful when he didn't know where the next attack would come from.
