Chapter 51: 51: THE DEADLOCK
----------------
The moment finally arrived when the referee stepped toward the mouth of the tunnel, he gripped the match ball tightly under his arm, he signaled for the team to follow him out into the roaring cauldron of the stadium.
William walked directly behind the captain, feeling the rhythmic thump of his heart echoing the beat of the fans' drums, while his hands adjusted the hem of his black-and-green jersey.
He was wearing the special match-day boots his father had bought for him, and as the metallic studs struck the hard floor of the tunnel, he felt a surge of confidence because these weren't just shoes; they were a symbol of the trust and sacrifice his family had made for his career.
The transition from the dim tunnel to the open pitch was breathtaking, because the massive floodlights were so bright they seemed to turn the night into day, making the green turf look like a glowing emerald stage.
The shouts from the thousands of supporters were deafening, creating a wall of sound that vibrated through William's skin and filled him with an intense, electric excitement that
he had never felt before.
As the team lined up for the pre-match ceremonies, William reached for the zipper of his training jacket and pulled it down with a
slow, deliberate motion. He shed the outer layer to reveal the crisp, dark fabric of his jersey, and as he turned to face the stands, the name "WILLIAM" showed boldly across his back in bright white letters above the number 14.
It was a statement to the world that he was no longer a prospect on the sidelines, but a warrior ready for battle, and the sight of his own name under the lights made him feel like he was finally exactly where he was meant to be.
The two captains met in the center circle for the coin toss, and while they shook hands, William took his position on the right side of the pitch, digging his studs into the grass to ensure his grip was perfect.
His specific role in this high-stakes game was to play as a wing-back, which meant he had the massive responsibility of defending the right flank while also sprinting forward to
support the attack.
It was one of the most demanding positions on the field because it required infinite stamina and tactical intelligence, yet William felt
ready to embrace the challenge.
Suddenly, the referee's whistle sounded with a sharp, piercing blast that signaled the start of the match, and the stadium erupted into a fresh frenzy of noise. Within the first minute, the ball was played back to the midfield, and
William immediately moved into space to receive a crisp, horizontal pass from Johnson.
As the ball zipped across the grass toward him, William didn't hesitate; he controlled it with a soft touch of his instep and immediately
looked up to scan the field.
A Bristol City midfielder rushed toward him to apply pressure, but William was ready, and he performed a lightning-fast 360-degree spin—a perfect roulette—that left the opponent
stumbling past him as he moved into the open space.
Blackpool began the game by controlling the tempo, moving the ball with a level of confidence that showed they were not intimidated by the occasion. Coleman, acting as the primary playmaker in the middle, took possession of the ball near the center circle and looked toward the left wing where Fernandes was waving for it.
Coleman delivered a beautiful, lofted pass that bypassed the defense and landed perfectly at the feet of the captain. Fernandes, known for his clinical dribbling skills, immediately tried to take on his marker with a series of quick
step-overs and a sudden burst of speed.
He tried to cut inside toward the penalty area, but the Bristol City right-back was disciplined and stayed low to the ground, refusing to bite on the feints. In a split second, the defender timed his tackle perfectly and stole the ball right off Fernandes' boot, quickly clearing it with a powerful strike that sent the ball flying back toward the Blackpool half.
William watched the ball soar over his head, and he immediately transitioned into defensive mode, sprinting back toward his own box to ensure that the counter-attack didn't catch them off guard.
The game was going well in terms of possession, but as the minutes ticked by, it
became clear that Blackpool needed goals to justify their dominance on the ball.
Although they were passing with precision and moving with grace, the Bristol City defense was organized like a solid brick wall, closing down spaces and blocking shooting lanes with desperate intensity.
William stayed wide on the right, providing an outlet whenever the central midfielders were under pressure, but he could feel the tension building because a draw would not be enough to move them up to fourth place.
He received the ball again near the touchline and noticed that the Bristol City left-back was playing very close to him, trying to prevent him from crossing the ball into the box. William used his body to shield the ball, and then he
executed a clever "rainbow flick" over his own head to bypass the defender, a move that brought the fans to their feet with a collective gasp of awe.
He chased the ball down near the corner flag and sent a fizzing, low cross into the
"corridor of uncertainty," but Ibrahim was a fraction of a second too late to meet it, and the ball rolled harmlessly out for a goal kick.
As the players reset their positions, William wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked toward the dugout, where Coach Lincoln was pacing back and forth with a look of deep concentration.
The team was playing the role of the aggressor, but they were struggling to find the final "killer pass" that would break the deadlock and allow them to take the lead. While Coleman and Grant continued to recycle the ball in the middle, William realized that they were becoming too predictable by always trying to go through the wings.
"We need to change the angle!" William shouted to Coleman during a brief break
in play, gesturing toward the "D" of the penalty box where the space was tightest.
He knew that if they could draw the defenders out of position by playing quick, one-touch combinations in the center, it would create the gaps they needed for the strikers to exploit.
However, Bristol City was happy to sit
deep and absorb the pressure, essentially "parking the bus" and waiting for Blackpool to make a mistake so they could launch another dangerous counter-attack.
The question of how to go through and get goals began to haunt the players as the first half progressed, because every time they reached the final third of the pitch, the defenders would swarm them like a hive of angry bees.
William noticed that Harris on the other side was also struggling to find a way past his
marker, and even though Valentino was using his pace to make diagonal runs, the passes were being intercepted before they could reach him.
William decided to take a risk and tucked inside, leaving his wide position to join the midfield struggle and create an overload of players in the center. This movement confused the Bristol City markers for a moment, because they weren't dure whether to follow him or stay in their defensive zones.
While the defenders were hesitating, William received a short pass from Grant and immediately looked for Morgan, who was wrestling with a tall center-back near the penalty spot.
William feinted a long shot, drawing two defenders toward him, and then he disguised a delicate through-ball into the path of Fernandes, who had drifted into a more central position. It was a moment of pure vision, but the Bristol City goalkeeper was alert and rushed off his line to smother the ball just
before Fernandes could get a toe to it.
The crowd groaned in disappointment, but
William felt a spark of hope because they had finally managed to penetrate the heart of the opposition's defense.
The intensity of the match was rising with every passing minute, and as the players' jerseys became soaked with sweat, the physical battle became even more grueling. William felt the weight of his father's boots on his feet, and he used that thought to fuel his next sprint, refusing to let fatigue slow him down. He knew that the breakthrough was coming, but he also knew that one mistake at the back could ruin everything they had worked for during the tactical session.
As the referee checked his watch, William looked around at his teammates and saw
the same determination in their eyes that he felt in his heart.
They were a machine built for victory, but right now, the machine was missing its final gear—the goal that would change the standings and put them on the path to the top of the table. He took his position for a throw-in, his mind already racing ahead to the next play, wondering which one of them would be the hero to finally ripple the white netting and send the stadium into a state of pure, unbridled
joy.
