Chapter 50: 50: NINETY MINUTES TO PROVE HIMSELF
----------------
Coach Lincoln stood in the center of the dressing room, his eyes sharp as he clapped his hands together with a loud, echoing thud that signaled the end of the meeting.
"Alright, everyone! It is time to get those muscles moving and your minds focused on the task at hand," he shouted, his voice commanding and full of energy.
"The fans are waiting, the pitch is ready, and I want to see a high-intensity warm-up from every single one of you, so let's head out there and show them we mean business!"
The players immediately began to rise from their benches, the sound of metal studs clicking against the floor creating a rhythmic noise that filled the room.
While most of the team was busy adjusting their training tops and grabbing their water bottles, William noticed a heavy tension coming from the corner of the room where Reed was sitting.
Reed's face was twisted into a mask of pure frustration, and he slammed his locker door shut with such force that several players turned to look at him.
It was no secret why Reed was so angry, because for the first time this season,
he had been dropped from the starting line-up, and William was the one who had replaced him in the midfield.
Reed had been the regular starter for a long time, but Coach Lincoln's decision to put William in the number 14 role had clearly
wounded his pride and left him feeling bitter.
William could feel Reed's eyes burning into the back of his neck as he laced up his special match-day boots, but he chose not to say a word or even look in Reed's direction.
Although he knew that Reed wanted to start an argument or provoke him with a snide remark, William decided to ignore the negativity totally because he didn't want to waste a single ounce of his energy on drama.
He realized that the "silent sanctuary" rule from the afternoon practice was still serving him well, so he simply stood up, adjusted his training bib, and followed Fernandes toward
the door. He felt a sense of maturity washing over him, knowing that his performance on the pitch would be the only answer he needed to give to those who were unhappy with his promotion.
As the team stepped out of the dressing room and began the walk through the concrete tunnel, the muffled roar of the crowd started to grow louder with every step they took. William felt nervous when he finally emerged from the tunnel and onto the bright, green turf of the stadium.
The sheer volume of the cheering fans hit him like a physical wave, and he could feel the
vibration of the singing in his chest as he looked up at the sea of black and green scarves waving in the stands.
He took a deep breath, the cool evening air filling his lungs, and he felt a profound sense of belonging as he began to jog across the pitch with his teammates. He looked around the massive stadium, noticing the thousands of faces in the crowd, and he realized that tonight was his chance to prove all of the doubters wrong.
He knew there were people who still didn't like him or believed he was too young to handle the pressure of such a critical match, but instead of feeling intimidated, he felt a burning desire to make them proud of him.
He wanted to show every person in that stadium that Coach Lincoln had made the
right choice, and he wanted to turn his critics into his biggest supporters by the time the final whistle blew.
The warm-up session was designed to be brief and interesting, focusing on quick movements and sharp passing to get their hearts pumping at maximum speed.
William joined the group consisting of Coleman, Grant, and Barco for a passing
drill, and as they moved the ball in a tight circle, he made sure that every one of his touches was crisp and accurate.
He could feel the eyes of the fans on him
as he controlled the ball with the side of his boot and sent it zip-ping across the grass to Coleman, and every time the crowd cheered a successful piece of skill, his confidence grew.
The atmosphere was electric because the fans were already in full voice, chanting the team's name and banging drums that echoed throughout the entire facility. William found himself caught up in the rhythm of the moment, and as he went through his stretching routine, he allowed himself to dream of a future where those fans would be shouting his name specifically.
He imagined the sound of the whole stadium chanting "William! William!" after he scored a goal or provided a winning assist, and that thought gave him a boost of energy that made
his movements even sharper.
Even though he was focused on his own preparation, he could still see Reed's anger radiating from across the pitch where the substitutes were warming up separately. Reed was kicking the ball with unnecessary force and grumbling to Barco whenever they crossed paths, but William didn't let it distract him for even a second.
He knew that the team needed him to be calm and composed, so he kept his head down and continued to follow the instructions of the fitness coach. He realized that if he allowed Reed's bitterness to get inside his head, he would be doing exactly what his rival wanted, and that was a mistake he wasn't willing to make.
The team then moved into a shooting drill, where the attackers and midfielders took turns firing the ball at Walker in the goal. William watched as Fernandes and Morgan hammered shots into the top corners of the net, and when it was his turn, he approached the ball with the same clinical precision he had shown during the afternoon's set-piece session.
He struck the ball with the laces of his boot, and it flew through the air with a satisfying whirr before slamming into the back of the net with a loud rustle. The nearby fans cheered loudly for
the goal, and William felt a flicker of a smile touch his lips because he knew his father was somewhere in those stands watching his every move.
As the official warm-up came to an end, the fitness coach blew a loud whistle and signaled for everyone to head back to the dressing room for the final transition. William felt a lingering sense of excitement as he jogged toward the tunnel, his skin glowing with a light sweat and his heart beating with a steady,
powerful rhythm.
The brief session had been exactly what he needed to shake off the last of his nerves, and as he walked back through the tunnel, he felt more ready than he had ever been in his entire life.
The journey back into the dressing room was much faster than the walk out, because the players were now in a zone of total concentration as the 8 PM kickoff drew closer.
When they entered the room, the atmosphere was different than before, having shifted from a place of anticipation to a place of absolute
battle readiness. William walked straight to his locker and saw his match jersey waiting for him, the black and green colors looking even more vibrant now that the lights were fully dimmed for the pre-match ritual.
He began to pull off his training kit and change into the official match gear, feeling the high-quality fabric of the jersey settle against his shoulders like a suit of armor.
He could still sense Reed's lingering anger in the room, but it felt smaller and less significant now that the game was actually here. The rest
of the starting eleven were also changing in silence, their faces set in grim expressions of determination as they prepared to step out for the real war against Bristol City.
William took a moment to sit down and close his eyes, listening to the muffled sounds of the crowd outside and the clicking of boots around him. He thought about the journey he had taken to get to this locker room, from the training sessions in the sun to the silent sanctuary of the afternoon, and he knew that
everything had led to this moment.
He was no longer just a spectator or a
substitute; he was a key part of the Blackpool machine, and he was determined to leave everything he had on that pitch.
As he pulled on his socks and adjusted his shin guards, he felt a profound sense of clarity and purpose that made him feel invincible. He was ready to wear his name and his number 14 with pride, and as the captain, Fernandes, stood up to lead them out for the final time, William followed him with his head held high.
The time for talking was over, the warm-ups were finished, and the only thing that mattered now was the ninety minutes of football that lay ahead of them. He was ready to show the world, the doubters, and even Reed, exactly why he belonged in the starting eleven.
