Chapter 172 - artifact creation
I looked at one book at a time, trying to understand the craft.
Luna, sitting beside me, got a book of her own and studied it as well.
We stayed silent as I began to understand how this worked.
For example, you could take a normal ring, use a high-level monster core, and combine its power with your element and the desired effect to imbue the object.
You could add many effects as long as you had the resources and the mental power to handle them.
My eyes lit up.
"Hmm... this is really interesting."
Luna nodded.
"Hmm. From what I’ve read, I can understand that there are clearly limits to the items."
"If we don’t have a strong enough material and a good enough monster core, then even if we have only one of them, whether it’s strong or weak, there’s a high chance of failure."
I nodded.
We read many more books and exchanged our knowledge and important information with each other.
It was really enjoyable to study with her.
She was a genius, and her thought process was unique. I could gain many insights from her way of thinking about the subject.
We stayed like that for hours, studying, sharing food, and drinking juice.
Then we finally read the last book as well.
We put away all the books and shared all the knowledge we had gained with each other. I asked her about the questions that had been bothering me, and she asked me about hers as well.
By the end, we had a good understanding of how to create artifacts and what kinds of materials were needed.
I looked at her.
"Hey, it’s already too late. It’s nighttime. Let’s go and sleep so we can experiment tomorrow."
She nodded.
I returned all the books to the librarian before returning to our rooms.
"Good night, Luna."
She nodded and smiled.
"Good night, Gray."
After that, I went to sleep.
The next morning, I woke up and found Luna waiting for me at my door.
I greeted her with a bright smile, and we both went to breakfast.
Mom told us that all the things we needed had been prepared and that we could go and get them.
I nodded with a happy smile.
Amy looked at us and asked,
"Mom, what is it that you prepared for him? Tell me too."
Mom simply shook her head in refusal.
Amy’s eyes widened as she looked at us.
"What are you guys hiding from me? Tell me..."
We just shrugged, including Mom.
Amy was speechless.
"Mom, even you joined in this brat’s mischief?"
Mom didn’t reply.
Then she huffed and left with Elena.
We had already finished our breakfast, so I looked at Mom and asked,
"Mom, are there powerful cores included in the items you prepared? We read about the basics last night, and we have some idea of how to create them."
Mom smiled and nodded.
"Yeah. There are many powerful cores in there, as well as weaker ones for testing."
"If you need more, just say so."
Mom smiled.
I nodded with shining eyes.
"Okay, Mom. Thanks."
We left the dining room as well, but before we left, Mom stopped us.
"Gray, next week is Amy’s birthday. Someone is coming to meet you sometime this week. I can’t say the exact day, but expect a visitor."
I tilted my head.
"A visitor? Who wants to see me? Who is it?"
Mom just smiled.
"You’ll see."
I nodded.
Of course, she had piqued my curiosity now.
But I let it go.
Right now, I was more interested in artifact creation.
Luna and I went to the room Mom had told us about.
Inside, we found two labs—one for normal experiments and another for advanced experiments.
We went to the normal one.
We saw all the items Mom had prepared for us.
I took a look.
There were many different materials, monster cores of different sizes, gemstones, and many other things.
My eyes lit up at the sight.
Then I looked at Luna.
"Let’s start."
I nodded at that and brought out two lab coats.
I gave one to Luna and smirked.
"Let’s get to the bottom of this."
Luna looked at the lab coat and blinked once.
Then twice.
She smiled at that and put on her lab coat as well.
Today, she was wearing a light-blue outfit, so it matched her lab coat nicely.
As for me, I was wearing my usual gray outfit.
I always changed between black and other dark colors, but never bright ones. Those weren’t suited for me.
Amy nagged endlessly about this, but I just ignored her.
Then I asked,
"So, what are we going to start with?"
She thought for a moment and asked,
"How about we both take a gem and try to put a spell inside it?"
My eyes lit up.
"That’s an amazing idea. Let’s begin."
She took a yellow stone and concentrated her Light Element.
I took a dark-purple gem and used Darkness.
We didn’t know whether the color of the gem had any effect, so we simply chose them because they looked cool.
I concentrated Darkness into the gem and took a monster core.
I supplied my Darkness into the monster core and let it seep into the gem little by little.
After a few moments, it exploded.
With my Perception, I caught it immediately and created a Space Barrier to block the shards.
Then I took another gem and used a less powerful monster core.
I kept an eye on Luna’s experiment as well.
She used a less powerful core too, but incredibly, her first attempt worked.
The power was very low, though.
I tried a second time and managed to create a Darkness gem.
I let Luna use it.
A small Dark Bullet appeared from it.
Her eyes lit up.
"Hmm. You did it as well."
I nodded, and we tried a few more experiments like that.
The more we experimented, the more proficiency we gained.
I used Space as well, and the first few gems simply blew up as soon as I injected Space into them.
But soon, we found the right balance with the help of my Perception.
Luna also made a lot of progress. Her Ice gems became as pure as they could get.
Then we moved on to a small ring.
I tried to imbue it with Darkness, but it wouldn’t work no matter what we did.
Luna tried with her Light Element as well, but it didn’t do anything.
So we decided to end it for the day.
It was already the end of the day.
We looked at each other and blinked.
"Where did the time go? We didn’t even notice it."
She nodded as well.
"Amy already sent us lunch through a maid. She respects our privacy."
Then we left for our rooms.
After refreshing ourselves with a wash, we came out feeling completely refreshed.
Then we went to the dining table while discussing what changes we could make to the ring to make it work.
Mom saw us, so we greeted everyone and sat down.
As soon as I sat down, Amy asked,
"What happened today? What did you two do in there all day? I had some work, so I haven’t had time to look into it."
I kept a straight face and replied,
"It’s a secret."
She huffed.
"Ahh, fine. Keep your secrets. I don’t want to know."
I smiled at that.
Mom asked,
"So, how’s your progress?"
I brightened up.
"It’s so fun! We made so much progress today."
Mom nodded. She had already expected this result.
Then we enjoyed our dinner, and everyone left to sleep.
Over the next few days, Luna and I got up in the morning, ate breakfast, and went to the lab.
We worked on the ring like mad scientists.
We tried countless combinations and different materials.
We changed the output, changed the elements, and tested different methods.
Finally, we figured it out.
We needed to create the spell construct beforehand and transfer it into the core.
Then, using the core, we could transfer the spell into the ring.
We also needed to have the result clearly in our minds and use a large amount of mental energy to make it work.
After days of practice, we finally succeeded in creating our first artifact.
It was an Ice Ring that could store one Ice spell.
We could choose the spell, but it couldn’t exceed the ring’s capacity.
Then we high-fived each other.
"We finally did it!"
Luna nodded, and we both had happy smiles as we looked at the ring and tried it out.
It worked perfectly, exactly as we intended.
Our eyes shone with determination as we saw the result of our first artifact.
Then I entered a normal spell into it and gave it to Luna.
She simply used her mana to activate it.
And it really worked.
"Yey! Our first artifact is successful!"
Then we took a break and discussed the Space Ring.
Luna showed me her Space Ring, and we studied it together.
Once again, night came, so we decided to continue our experiments tomorrow.
We were both enjoying this far too much.
