Chapter 94 - 95 : Mock Battle
The following week, at the training grounds of Tokyo Jujutsu High, Mark stretched his shoulders and looked at the three first-years standing before him.
"Alright. Come at me with everything you’ve got. If even one of you manages to land a clean hit on me, training ends for today."
Nobara’s eyes lit up as she spun her hammer. "Seriously?" A grin spread across her face.
"Perfect. I’m sick of these school uniforms. I’ll beat you, take the day off, and go buy some new clothes."
Yuji cracked his knuckles and dropped into a fighting stance while Megumi quietly lowered his center of gravity, eyes never leaving Mark.
Mark chuckled. "Well, you can tr—"
He didn’t even get to finish. Yuji disappeared from his spot and instantly appeared behind him, throwing a straight punch toward Mark’s face.
Fast. Just as expected. His physical strength really is ridiculous.
Without even turning around, Mark tilted his head just enough for Yuji’s fist to slice through empty air, then casually lifted one leg and drove his foot straight into Yuji’s backside.
Thud!
"Ow!"
Yuji stumbled several meters forward before barely catching himself. Rubbing the sore spot, he turned around with an offended look.
"Couldn’t you have kicked somewhere else?"
"You attacked first."
Before Yuji could complain further, nails shot toward Mark from behind — Nobara had already made her move.
At almost the same instant, Megumi clasped his hands together, preparing to bring his shikigami into the fight.
A small grin appeared on Mark’s face. "Now that’s more like it. They’re finally attacking together."
Nobara’s nails flew one after another, each aimed to cut off his escape routes rather than hit him directly. Megumi completed his hand sign.
"Divine Dogs."
The two shikigami burst from the shadows, splitting up to attack from opposite sides.
Yuji didn’t waste the opening — the moment Mark’s attention shifted toward the shikigami, he charged in again with a flurry of punches.
Mark calmly stepped to the side.
Yuji’s fist narrowly missed his face. He twisted just enough to avoid a slash from one Divine Dog before lightly hopping backward, causing Nobara’s nails to fly past where he’d been standing a moment earlier.
"Tch!" Nobara immediately adjusted her position. "Don’t let him breathe!"
Yuji lunged forward again while Megumi directed both Divine Dogs from different angles — one went for Mark’s legs, the other leaped toward his shoulder. Mark simply shifted his footing.
The first dog rushed past. He leaned backward just enough for the second one’s claws to miss his chest by a hair before spinning around Yuji’s punch. Yuji’s momentum carried him straight into the path of one of the Divine Dogs.
"Watch out!" Megumi shouted.
Yuji hastily jumped aside, narrowly avoiding the collision.
"Better," Mark said. "But you’re still getting in each other’s way."
Nobara clicked her tongue and drove another handful of nails toward him. Mark casually walked between them as if he already knew exactly where each one would land. Not a single nail touched him.
Megumi frowned. He’s not using cursed energy.
From the beginning of the spar until now, Mark hadn’t activated a cursed technique or reinforced his body with cursed energy. He was relying entirely on reflexes, timing, and movement.
Yuji noticed it too. "He’s just dodging!"
"Then don’t give him anywhere to dodge!" Nobara shouted.
The three immediately changed their approach — Yuji attacked from the front without letting up, Nobara continuously launched nails to limit Mark’s movement, and Megumi controlled the battlefield with his shikigami, trying to corner him from every direction.
Even surrounded from all sides, Mark calmly slipped through every opening.
"Cursed Technique: Straw Doll Technique." Nobara drove a nail into the ground with her hammer. "Hairpin."
Several cursed nails embedded in the ground detonated one after another, forcing Mark to jump sideways. Before he could land, Megumi’s hands came together.
"Divine Dogs." The black and white shikigami burst from the shadows, one attacking from the front while the other circled behind. "Nue."
A large winged shikigami swooped down from above, electricity crackling around its wings. Yuji didn’t hesitate — the instant Mark avoided Nue, he dashed forward with a straight punch followed by a low kick.
Mark shifted one step to the left. Yuji’s punch missed.
He lifted his foot just enough for the low kick to pass underneath before turning his shoulders, allowing one Divine Dog to brush past his jacket.
Nobara had already anticipated his movement — another nail flew toward where he was about to step. Mark simply changed direction. The nail struck the ground instead.
For the next several minutes, the three first-years continued attacking without giving him a moment to rest.
Nobara stopped for a moment, breathing a little heavier than before. "What the hell... would you stop dodging and get hit already?"
Mark looked at her as he casually stepped around another one of Yuji’s punches. "What type of curse would wait for you to exorcise it?"
He tilted his head, avoiding another nail.
"If your attack misses, I’m going to move. You’re trying too hard to land the perfect hit. In a real fight, the other side isn’t going to stand still and cooperate."
Megumi watched Mark’s movements carefully instead of rushing in again.
He’s reading our attacks before they happen. If we keep chasing him one by one, we’ll never touch him. His hands came together.
"Toad."
A large frog shikigami emerged from the shadows behind Mark. Before he could turn around, its tongue shot forward and wrapped tightly around his waist.
"Yuji! Kugisaki! Now!" Megumi shouted.
Yuji exploded forward, the ground cracking beneath his feet as he drove a punch straight toward Mark’s chest. At the same time, Nobara swung her hammer.
"Cursed Technique: Straw Doll Technique! Hairpin!"
Several nails flew toward Mark from different angles, leaving him almost no room to dodge.
Mark looked down at the tongue wrapped around him. "...Wow." He tugged lightly on it. "Pretty strong."
Yuji closed the remaining distance in an instant. "Got you!"
Nobara smiled. "This time you can’t dodge."
"We’ll see." Mark planted one foot and pulled — instead of freeing himself from the tongue, he yanked the entire frog shikigami toward him.
The sudden force caught Megumi off guard. The frog was dragged several meters across the ground, pulling directly into Yuji’s path and ruining his timing.
"Oh, come on!"
Yuji hastily changed his footing to avoid crashing into it.
Mark used that brief opening to slip free from the loosened tongue, sidestepping Nobara’s incoming nails by only a few centimeters. They struck the ground behind him.
Landing lightly a short distance away, Mark dusted off his sleeve. "Not bad. That was your best teamwork so far." He looked at Megumi.
"The idea was good." Then at Yuji and Nobara. "You two were just a split second late."
He rolled his neck and stepped forward.
"Alright. My turn. And as promised, I won’t use any cursed techniques. Just physical strength." He settled into a simple fighting stance and took a slow breath.
"First Gate... Second Gate... Open."
"Huh?" all three said at the same time.
Before any of them could figure out what he meant, Mark vanished.
The next two minutes passed in a blur.
Yuji rushed in first with a straight punch at full strength.
Mark slipped to the side, avoided it by a few centimeters, drove his shoulder into Yuji’s chest, and sent him rolling across the ground with a quick sweep.
Nobara immediately tried to create distance and threw several nails while swinging her hammer, but Mark zigzagged between them without slowing down.
He reached her in an instant, tapped the back of her hammer with two fingers to throw off her balance, then lightly flicked her forehead before she could recover.
"Ow!"
At the same time, Megumi summoned the Divine Dogs.
They attacked together — one from the front, one from behind. Mark ducked under one set of claws, stepped over the other, grabbed the black Divine Dog by the scruff of its neck, and tossed it aside.
Before the white Divine Dog could bite, he gently pushed its head away with his palm, sending it tumbling across the training ground.
Megumi immediately formed another hand sign. "Toad!"
The frog’s tongue shot toward Mark. He caught it with one hand. "...Again?"
He gave it a small tug. The frog was pulled forward instead, dragging Megumi a step with it and breaking his rhythm.
Yuji was already back on his feet and charged again.
Mark met him head-on this time — the two exchanged several punches, but every strike Yuji threw was either redirected or narrowly avoided. Mark finally caught Yuji’s wrist, turned his body, and threw him cleanly over his shoulder.
Thud!
By the time the dust settled, all three first-years were lying on the ground, breathing heavily.
Yuji stared at the sky. "That guy’s a monster... what is that ridiculous physical strength?"
Nobara turned her head toward him. "You’re the one to talk. Your physical strength is ridiculous too."
Yuji scratched his cheek. "...Fair."
Megumi remained silent. Every shikigami he had summoned had been defeated.
Mark hadn’t used cursed energy or a cursed technique. He had beaten all three of them using nothing but speed, technique, and overwhelming physical ability.
