Chapter 88 - 89 : Eight Gates
"Hmm... what is this location? It looks depressing," Mark muttered, looking at the address Satomi had given him.
Standing before him was an abandoned hospital on the outskirts of Tokyo. Broken windows, rusted gates, cracked concrete walls — it looked as though it had been left to rot for decades.
He let out a sigh. Since he’d spent the last few days doing nothing but eating and wandering around Tokyo, Satomi had finally decided he’d been slacking enough and assigned him his first mission.
Eliminate a Grade 1 curse.
Curses were malevolent creatures born from the negative emotions of humanity — fear, hatred, despair, regret, jealousy, grief.
Whenever those emotions accumulated, cursed energy gathered and eventually gave birth to cursed spirits. Twisted mockeries of human beings, existing only to harm and kill.
Tokyo, with one of the largest populations in Japan, generated an enormous amount of negative emotion every day, and cursed spirits appeared there far more frequently than most other places.
Jujutsu Society classified curses into grades. Grade 4 represented the weakest — little more than nuisances.
Grade 3 and 2 were progressively more dangerous, requiring trained sorcerers.
Grade 1 stood near the top, possessing intelligence, powerful cursed energy, and abilities capable of overwhelming most sorcerers.
Above all of them stood the Special Grades — monsters so dangerous that each one was considered an extraordinary threat.
Against Special Grades, death could come instantly, and in some cases the fate waiting afterward was worse than dying.
Mark looked back at the building. "So... Grade 1, huh?" A small grin spread across his face. "Let’s see what jujutsu curses are actually like."
Before entering, he remembered something Satomi had taught him. "Oh, right. First, the veil."
He raised his hand and focused his cursed energy.
A black curtain spread from above, descending over the abandoned hospital like an enormous dome, swallowing the entire building before expanding across the surrounding grounds and cutting the area off from the outside world.
The sounds of the city vanished. Even the sunlight seemed dimmer beneath it.
Mark nodded. "Good. Now no one’s going to interrupt me."
With both hands in his pockets, he walked through the broken entrance and disappeared into the darkness.
The air inside was damp and carried the stench of mold mixed with something rotten.
The long corridors were lined with overturned wheelchairs, rusted hospital beds, and dried bloodstains that had long since turned black.
As Mark walked deeper inside, he noticed several weak curses lurking in the halls — small curses tearing into one another like starving animals, devouring each other’s flesh to grow stronger.
One ripped the arm off another and shoved it into its mouth. Another leaped onto its back and bit through its neck.
"Gross..." Mark muttered.
The moment he spoke, the corridor fell silent. Every curse slowly turned toward him.
Then a scraping sound echoed through the hallway.
Scrape... Scrape...
Something crawled across the ceiling. Mark looked up.
A grotesque humanoid curse with six insect-like legs clung upside down above him. It wore a torn patient’s gown while dozens of empty medicine bottles protruded from its swollen back. Its mouth stretched from ear to ear into an unnatural smile.
The curse tilted its head. "Patients..." Its voice sounded like several people speaking at once. "...should take their medicine." Its smile widened until the corners of its mouth split open. "Patients... take your medicine."
Mark calmly looked it up and down. "So... a Grade 2." A faint smile appeared on his face. "Time to stretch a little."
He shifted his stance and took a slow breath. "Might Guy... First Gate... Gate of Opening."
A surge of power flowed through his body. His muscles tightened as energy and physical strength erupted together. A powerful shockwave burst beneath his feet, cracking the hospital floor.
The curse shrieked and rushed forward, all six legs digging into the walls and ceiling as it crawled with terrifying speed. Its claws swung downward.
Mark vanished. The claws ripped through the floor.
A thunderous crack echoed through the corridor as his punch buried itself into the curse’s side and launched the monster through three concrete walls.
The abandoned hospital shook violently. Chunks of concrete rained onto the lower floors.
The curse crashed into an operating room. Mark was already there.
His elbow smashed into its skull and sent it through the ceiling.
He jumped after it, seized two of its legs midair, and slammed the entire body back into the rooftop. The roof collapsed. Steel bars bent. Concrete exploded in every direction.
The curse let out a distorted scream.
"Hmm..." Mark rolled his shoulder. "The First Gate isn’t enough. Second Gate... Gate of Rest."
Heat rushed through his body. He disappeared again. The curse barely raised an arm before his kick connected with its chest and blasted straight through the building.
The entire side of the hospital collapsed outward as the curse flew through it like a cannonball.
Mark landed outside. "...Still alive?"
The mangled curse slowly dragged itself out of the rubble, broken limbs twisting back into place. "Patients... take..."
"Third Gate... Gate of Life ."
Another surge erupted through his body. The ground shattered beneath him.
In a single step he crossed dozens of meters. His fist struck the curse and the air itself exploded.
The curse’s torso burst apart — one arm flew into the parking lot, its lower body smashed into a nearby ambulance, its head rocketed through the hospital entrance.
Mark caught the flying head before it landed. "...Still not dead?"
The severed head opened its mouth. "Patients..."
Mark sighed. "You’re annoying." He tossed the head upward. "Fourth Gate... Gate of Pain."
Power erupted throughout his body, veins bulging across his arms. The instant the head reached its highest point —
Mark vanished.
Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom.
A barrage of punches erupted in the air, each strike creating a shockwave that tore apart the surrounding concrete.
The remaining pieces of the curse were blown apart again and again — an arm landed on the roof, part of its torso crashed through a wall, its head rolled into the shattered parking lot, its remaining legs lay hundreds of meters apart.
Mark landed quietly.
The curse wasn’t dead. None of the pieces dissolved. Instead they continued twitching, slowly dragging themselves toward one another.
"...Right." Mark watched the pieces crawl. "A curse can only be killed by cursed energy."
He cracked his knuckles, ready to continue — but the curse, apparently having reassessed the situation, turned its scattered pieces around and began fleeing in the opposite direction as fast as its mangled body would allow.
Mark stared after it. "...It ran away."
