Chapter 106: A Quiet Day
With the two women now away, Ronan walked out of the house with a heavy heart.
He walked from the inner city to the outer city, looking at the humans going about their day with smiles on their faces.
He observed the fights, kids playing in the gaps when they saw his adventurer clothes.
He could see some people pointing at him in surprise and awe, and some kids probably dreaming of becoming an adventurer.
Ronan bought a lot of food, with priority being those similar to the ones he used to eat on Earth. It didn’t matter if he couldn’t eat them because he was an undead; he still stuffed everything he could into his mouth.
Because of the distraction brought by his clothes, he decided to change them.
"Give me some new sets of clothes..." Entering the boutique, Ronan spoke to the female behind the counter.
"Ah..."
"Yes, sir. Please, this way..." She smiled when she realized Ronan was an adventurer. He was brought to the best section in the shop, with quality clothes, as Ronan took his time trying them one after the other.
There were also other people in the shop trying new clothes. Ronan glanced at them as he was done with the clothes, picking a rather vibrant sets of clothes as he dropped ten gold coins on the counter.
"Everything is on me. Tell them to pick as much as they want," Ronan finished as he went out with his new clothes.
Meanwhile, the woman trembled.
This...
Ten gold coins?
Everything in her shop wasn’t even worth this much. This was something she didn’t expect.
But of course, he was an adventurer. She had no thought of not telling those in the shop. Anyways, even if all her clothes were picked, she would still be in gain, so she excitedly told them.
Not only the people shopping, but her workers attending to them erupted with joy.
Some people went out intending to thank Ronan, but he was nowhere in sight.
Ronan went on eating and trying new food. Even if he couldn’t taste anything, he complimented the cooking and was generous.
Today was just him taking time off, watching the humans.
More than a hundred gold left his hands.
Unlike when he left the house with a heavy heart, the more time he spent outside, the calmer his heart became, as it almost seemed like he was being washed clean.
Ronan didn’t go back until it was dark.
"Gark..."
Ronan vomited all the food he ate. His body trembled, but he had no regrets. Even if he couldn’t taste the food, it was something he would still do once again.
"Sir... are you... okay?"
Just then, in the dark alleyways, Ronan heard a trembling voice as a small child in tattered clothes came out.
His lips were cold and broken by the fierce wind. It was cold around this time, especially at night.
A small child without clothes would inevitably suffer and would be prone to falling sick, not to talk of the boy’s hollowed face.
A beggar, maybe?
Life really was cruel. At least, that was what the kid would think, right?
"Here... maybe the food was bad, but I have this..." The boy spoke as he hurriedly checked his clothes. He brought out a fresh piece of bread and offered it to Ronan.
Ronan’s eyes narrowed, not understanding.
You are hungry. Maybe this is even the last bread you are depending on to last you through the week.
You might even be rationing it, meaning going days without eating and only eating a bit when you can’t hold on.
Yet you saw a stranger who just vomited the food he had eaten, and the first thing you did was give away the food you needed for survival?
This was pure stupidity.
Ronan grabbed the bone-thin arm and dragged him closer as the boy yelped, his face showing fear.
Ronan observed the kid.
Brown, dirty hair. Black eyes. Thin, bony cheeks.
He was also malnourished. He would be underweight compared to the kids his age.
At least, he should be twelve, but he looked like he was five years old.
Yet, with everything, apart from the fear in the boy’s eyes, there was something Ronan didn’t fully understand.
Humanity, was it?
Kindness... who knows?
More so, who gives a fuck?
This was something Ronan didn’t have.
If he had only his last bread, hungry... and it was the last hope he had to survive for the next week or until he could see another one, he would never give it to a stranger who looked to just have a bad stomach after eating till he was full.
Ronan opened his mouth as it expanded twice as wide as a normal human’s. Four fangs appeared, and crimson eyes were seen as the kid’s body trembled. He wanted to scream, but it was too late.
Splash!
Blood hit the wall as his teeth sank into the boy’s neck before he ripped apart the flesh. The boy instantly fell onto the ground.
His eyes grew lifeless as Ronan enjoyed the taste of the blood. He drove his teeth into the open wound and started sucking it greedily.
It wasn’t until after an hour that Ronan walked out.
He had already disposed of the clothes he wore and had picked out one of the other sets he bought.
In the alleyway, only a bone with some flesh still around it was left. The boy’s flesh had been eaten and his blood sucked dry, leaving only a piece of bread on the ground.
The moonlight hit Ronan’s face as he opened his mouth slightly, his tongue licking the few stains of blood around his teeth.
"Let’s begin..." Ronan muttered with a smile as he walked around the city.
The night wasn’t meant to be calm as a few Blood Servants were born.
It was around dawn before Ronan returned to the house. It was quiet. At first, Ronan wanted to talk to the two women, but...
Forget it. He should give them time. Maybe Yen might be able to convince Hesa, or at least she shouldn’t do something that might cost them in the future.
Entering his room, Ronan took a cold bath before he slept.
His mind was put at ease as it seemed like a big hurdle in his mind had been crossed.
