Chapter 143 – The First Throne’s Mark
The expedition returned to the village before nightfall, carrying the latest maps and a new set of questions. The buried garden had been unlike anything they had encountered before. It was not a ruin filled with traps, nor was it a dormant weapon waiting to be activated. It was a functioning ecosystem that had survived beneath the earth for countless years, sustained by the same network that connected the forest, the village well, and the eastern hills.
Yet the discovery of the archway had changed everything.
The inscription had not mentioned a destination. It had described a principle: the road continued where life chose to grow.
Orion gathered the researchers inside the village hall while the others waited nearby. A large regional map covered the central table, with markers placed at every known point of resonance. The forest structure, the village well, the barren hill, and the buried garden formed a clear eastern path.
One of the researchers placed a new marker beyond the garden.
"The next fluctuation occurred here," she explained. "We detected it shortly after the archway activated."
Marcus leaned over the map. "How far away?"
"Approximately fifteen kilometers."
Ryan stared at the distance. "So we’re walking another fifteen kilometers tomorrow?"
"Unless you have wings," Elena replied.
Ryan considered that. "I could probably negotiate for some."
"You couldn’t negotiate with a chicken."
"That chicken was unreasonable."
Orion ignored their exchange and studied the new marker. "What is located there?"
The researcher opened an old record and frowned.
"That is the strange part. The area was surveyed several times, but no settlement or ruin was ever recorded. However, there is one unusual detail."
"Which is?" Caelan asked.
"Every survey reported that the land was unusually stable. No landslides, no erosion, no major changes in terrain, even during severe storms."
Azrael looked at the map.
"That isn’t natural."
The researcher turned toward him. "You believe the network is responsible?"
"Possibly. If the structure beneath the garden carries energy eastward, it may also be stabilizing the land along its path."
Seraphina studied the map more closely. "Then the next location may not be another structure. It could be an area being protected."
Orion nodded. "We’ll investigate in the morning."
Before he could continue, the lamps inside the hall flickered.
A faint vibration passed through the floor.
Everyone fell silent.
Azrael immediately turned toward the eastern wall. His perception spread through the village, following the resonance beneath the soil. The pulse was different this time. It wasn’t moving through the roots or flowing through the wells.
It was gathering.
Seraphina felt it as well, but where Azrael sensed a pressure beneath the earth, she felt the surrounding life becoming still.
"The plants are listening," she murmured.
Orion stepped away from the table. "Everyone outside."
The villagers gathered in the open square as the ground began to glow.
The light did not rise from the well. Instead, thin lines appeared across the earth, spreading outward from the center of the settlement. They formed a wide circular pattern that passed beneath houses, through the square, and around the old well without damaging anything.
The pattern was familiar.
A golden line appeared first.
A black line followed.
Then a colorless mark formed between them.
But this time, the three forces did not create an entrance. They arranged themselves into the shape of a throne.
The image remained suspended above the ground, formed entirely from light.
Marcus stared at it.
"That wasn’t there before."
"No," Azrael said.
His eyes narrowed as he studied the pattern. The structure wasn’t merely displaying the three forces. It was using them to preserve a precise formation. Genesis maintained the living energy within the village, Oblivion removed harmful instability, and the colorless force kept the two from interfering with each other.
Seraphina stepped closer.
"The formation is protecting the village."
Azrael shook his head slightly. "Not just the village."
He looked toward the eastern hills.
"It’s protecting the road."
The light expanded, revealing faint lines extending beneath the surrounding land. The network became visible for a brief moment, stretching from the forest to the village, from the village to the barren hill, and from there toward the buried garden.
Then another line appeared.
It traveled farther east than any of them had previously detected.
At its end stood the faint outline of a towering figure seated upon a throne.
The image was incomplete, little more than a silhouette formed from shifting energy. No face could be seen, and no voice accompanied its appearance. Yet the presence of the figure carried an unmistakable sense of permanence.
The ground beneath the village became perfectly still.
Even the wind stopped.
Seraphina felt the life around her settle into a strange rhythm. The trees no longer rustled, the animals remained motionless, and the villagers stood quietly as if the entire settlement had become part of a single living system.
Azrael focused on the silhouette.
He could not sense hostility.
He could not sense an invitation either.
Instead, he felt a principle being demonstrated.
Stability.
Something had once been placed here to keep the network from collapsing.
Orion looked toward the researchers. "Can you identify it?"
They were already checking their instruments, but every crystal had gone dark.
One researcher shook her head. "The energy isn’t behaving like a normal fluctuation. It’s too organized."
Another opened an old archive tablet and began searching through historical records.
Then she stopped.
"I found something."
Orion turned toward her.
The researcher read from the damaged record. "Before the division of the ancient realms, seven thrones were said to have maintained the balance of the greater world. Their keepers were not rulers in the ordinary sense. They were appointed to preserve certain principles when the forces of existence became unstable."
She looked up at the glowing silhouette.
"This symbol may be connected to one of them."
The light suddenly intensified.
Azrael felt pressure against his perception. It wasn’t trying to force him away. It was testing whether he would attempt to understand it through power alone.
He remembered his master’s voice.
The stone was never the lesson.
Azrael slowly lowered his hand.
Instead of reaching toward the formation, he listened.
The energy beneath the village moved in three distinct rhythms. Genesis flowed through the living roots. Oblivion passed through the stone and removed small traces of accumulated decay. The colorless force connected both paths, maintaining the space between them.
Azrael recognized the pattern.
The formation wasn’t a throne in the literal sense.
It was a point of balance.
He extended a small amount of Oblivion through Astraeus, not as an attack, but as a careful thread. He guided it toward a damaged section of the underground network where the energy had begun to gather unevenly.
The moment his power touched the damaged section, the formation trembled.
Seraphina immediately understood what he was doing.
"That part is carrying too much pressure," she said.
She raised her hand and released a gentle stream of Genesis energy. Rather than forcing more energy into the network, she guided the living roots surrounding the damaged section, encouraging them to spread and create additional channels.
Azrael severed the unstable portion.
Seraphina restored the living pathways around it.
The formation stabilized.
For the first time, the colorless mark brightened.
The silhouette of the throne became clearer.
A symbol appeared above it: a circle surrounded by seven narrow points, with one point shining more brightly than the others.
The researcher studying the records whispered, "The First Throne."
The image lasted only a few seconds before fading into the earth.
The wind returned.
The trees began moving again.
The villagers slowly released the breaths they had been holding.
No structure rose from the ground. No enemy appeared. Nothing demanded that the expedition follow it.
But the network had revealed something important.
The eastern road had not been created randomly.
It had been maintained by an ancient system connected to the Seven Thrones.
Orion looked at Azrael and Seraphina.
"You two stabilized the formation."
Azrael glanced at the place where the light had vanished.
"We only corrected what was failing."
Seraphina looked toward the eastern horizon. "And the network showed us where the next failure may be."
Far beyond the village, another pulse moved through the earth.
This time, it carried a faint golden light.
Then a black one.
Between them, a colorless line appeared and vanished.
The road continued eastward.
And somewhere beyond the buried garden, the legacy of the Seven Thrones was beginning to reveal itself.
