Genesis & Oblivion: The Celestial Evolution System

Chapter 121 – Beyond the Tower

Light flooded Azrael’s vision.

For several seconds, he could see nothing but white. The sensation of solid ground beneath his feet returned gradually, followed by the sound of wind moving through trees.

He opened his eyes.

They were standing in a familiar forest.

The Tower was gone.

Behind them stood nothing except a massive stone archway covered in ancient markings. There was no entrance, no staircase, and no sign that the enormous structure they had spent so long inside had ever existed beyond the arch.

Seraphina looked around in disbelief. "We’re back."

Azrael slowly turned toward the sky.

The sun was exactly where it had been when they entered the Tower.

He frowned.

"Not much time passed."

Caelan looked at him. "How much?"

Azrael concentrated for a moment, comparing the surrounding energy with his memories.

"Less than an hour."

Everyone fell silent.

They had experienced dozens of trials, witnessed forgotten civilizations, explored memories that stretched back to the First Heaven, and uncovered secrets that had existed long before the current gods.

Yet outside the Tower, barely any time had passed.

Marcus laughed in disbelief. "You’re telling me we spent all that time in there and the world barely noticed?"

Ryan stretched his arms. "I’m not complaining."

Seraphina smiled, but her attention remained on the stone archway.

"The Tower is still there."

Azrael looked at her.

"Somewhere beyond that entrance, yes. But its purpose isn’t ours anymore."

She nodded.

Their journey inside the Tower was finished.

For the first time since entering it, neither of them felt the need to wonder what floor came next.

There was no next floor.

No trial.

No staircase waiting for them.

The Tower was behind them.

Seraphina took a deep breath of the fresh air. "I didn’t realize how much I missed this."

Azrael gave her a small smile. "The forest?"

"Everything."

She looked toward the distant mountains.

"The sky. The sunlight. Being able to walk somewhere without wondering whether the Tower is about to throw another trial at us."

Caelan laughed quietly.

"I understand that feeling."

The others gradually relaxed as well.

They had spent so long adapting to the Tower that ordinary surroundings almost felt unfamiliar.

Azrael, however, couldn’t completely relax.

His attention was focused on something else.

He could feel a change within himself.

It wasn’t a sudden increase in strength.

There was no dramatic surge of energy.

Instead, his perception had become sharper.

The world felt more connected.

The wind moving through the trees had a rhythm.

The earth beneath his feet carried a faint resonance.

Even the distant mountains seemed to possess their own presence.

Azrael closed his eyes.

For a moment, he could almost feel the entire forest breathing.

His Aetherion Resonance responded naturally.

He opened his eyes again.

Seraphina noticed.

"You felt it too?"

"Yes."

She smiled.

"Genesis Bloom is reacting to the environment differently as well. It’s almost like I can sense the life around us without actively using my abilities."

Azrael nodded.

The Tower had not simply given them skills.

It had changed how they understood the world.

But before they could discuss it further, Caelan suddenly looked toward the road.

"Someone is coming."

Everyone turned.

A carriage appeared in the distance, traveling along the forest road toward them. Several armored riders surrounded it.

Azrael immediately recognized the insignia.

"The academy."

Marcus sighed with relief.

"Then we’re not far from home."

As the carriage approached, one of the riders raised a hand.

"Stop!"

The group stepped aside.

The rider looked at them for several seconds before his eyes widened.

"You’re the expedition team from the Tower."

Caelan nodded. "Yes."

The man’s expression changed immediately.

"You were supposed to return yesterday."

Azrael exchanged a glance with Seraphina.

"Yesterday?"

The rider nodded. "The academy has been waiting for you."

Azrael frowned.

The Tower had distorted their perception of time enough that they had no idea how long their absence had felt from the outside.

The rider continued, "Headmaster Orion ordered us to find you if you didn’t return by today."

Seraphina stepped forward. "Is something wrong?"

The rider hesitated.

"Nothing confirmed. But there have been reports of unusual activity around several regions."

Azrael’s expression became serious.

"What kind of activity?"

"Monsters appearing outside their normal territories. Several ancient ruins have become active. There have also been reports of strange energy fluctuations."

The rider lowered his voice.

"And the worst one came from the northern mountains."

Azrael’s eyes narrowed.

"What happened there?"

"We don’t know."

The rider shook his head. "The scouts sent to investigate never returned."

The group became quiet.

Seraphina looked at Azrael.

The timing bothered her.

They had just returned from a place that had revealed the existence of the First Heaven, the Seven Custodians, the separation of Genesis and Oblivion, and their connection to something far older than the current world.

Now ancient ruins were becoming active.

Azrael wasn’t willing to assume it was a coincidence.

But he also refused to jump to conclusions.

"Take us to the academy."

The rider nodded.

Everyone began climbing into the carriage.

Before entering, Seraphina looked back at the stone archway one final time.

For a brief moment, she thought she saw a faint golden glow beneath the ancient markings.

Then it disappeared.

She smiled slightly and turned away.

The Tower had given them knowledge.

It had not given them every answer.

That was fine.

They would find the remaining answers themselves.

Inside the carriage, Azrael sat beside Seraphina while Caelan, Orin, Lyanna, Marcus, and the others occupied the remaining seats.

The journey back to the academy began.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Seraphina leaned toward her brother.

"So."

Azrael glanced at her.

"We’re finally leaving the Tower behind."

"Yes."

She smiled.

"What do you want to do first?"

Azrael thought about it.

"Sleep."

Seraphina stared at him before laughing.

"That wasn’t the answer I expected."

"I haven’t slept properly since we entered."

"Fair."

She leaned back against the seat.

"Then I’ll sleep too."

The others soon joined their laughter.

For the first time in a long while, the twins were simply enjoying being together.

No prophecy.

No ancient memories.

No forgotten custodians.

No cosmic forces.

Just brother and sister traveling home.

But as the carriage disappeared down the road, far away in the northern mountains, something unexpected happened.

Deep beneath an abandoned ruin, an ancient formation that had remained dormant for countless years suddenly reacted to a familiar energy.

Golden light appeared along one side.

Black light appeared along the other.

The two energies remained separate.

Then, slowly, a third symbol appeared between them.

A symbol neither Genesis nor Oblivion.

A symbol representing something the Tower had shown the twins only once.

Choice.

The formation remained active.

And somewhere within the darkness beneath the mountains, an ancient stone door began to open.
