Chapter 120 – The Final Choice
The throne room remained completely still.
Azrael and Seraphina stood before the three thrones, neither willing to approach them yet. The golden throne radiated a gentle warmth that Seraphina could feel against her skin, while the black throne seemed to absorb the surrounding light. The third throne, however, was different. It possessed no aura at all, yet somehow it drew their attention more strongly than the other two.
Caelan slowly walked closer. "What is that third throne supposed to represent?"
"I don’t know," Azrael replied.
Seraphina studied it carefully. "Maybe it isn’t meant to represent a power."
Azrael looked at her.
She continued, "The golden throne represents Genesis. The black one represents Oblivion. If the third throne belongs between them, perhaps it represents the one thing neither of them can decide."
"Choice," Azrael said.
The moment he spoke, the chamber reacted.
The three thrones disappeared.
The floor beneath them transformed into a vast field filled with countless images of worlds. Some were flourishing with life, while others were collapsing. In one world, a civilization begged for another chance after reaching the end of its existence. In another, a dying planet continued producing life despite having almost nothing left. Elsewhere, a powerful kingdom had become a threat to millions, yet its people still lived ordinary lives and knew nothing of the destruction their rulers were preparing.
Seraphina stared at the visions.
"This is different from everything we’ve seen before."
A voice answered from everywhere at once.
"Because there is no correct answer."
The Origin Custodian appeared.
This time, its form was clearer than before. It still had no face, but its outline was no longer completely featureless. It resembled a person wearing a simple white robe, standing calmly between Genesis and Oblivion.
Azrael immediately stepped forward. "You said we were chosen because we could understand what others could not. What exactly were you expecting us to understand?"
"That Genesis is not salvation."
The figure turned toward Seraphina.
"Creation can preserve suffering. Life can become a burden when it is forced to continue. To create something is to accept responsibility for what that creation becomes."
Seraphina remained silent, absorbing the words.
The Origin Custodian then turned toward Azrael.
"And Oblivion is not destruction."
Azrael’s eyes narrowed.
"To end something can be cruel. It can also be mercy. Destruction without understanding is meaningless, but refusing to allow anything to end is equally destructive."
The visions around them changed.
Seraphina saw a civilization that had survived for millions of years only because Genesis constantly restored everything that was lost. Its people could never die, but neither could they truly change. Their world had become a prison disguised as paradise.
Azrael saw another civilization consumed by endless destruction. Every generation was erased before it could leave anything behind.
Neither world was balanced.
Neither had been allowed to follow its natural path.
The Origin Custodian spoke again.
"The six custodians believed that if they controlled Genesis and Oblivion, they could control existence itself. They were wrong. Existence cannot be governed by preventing every mistake."
Azrael looked toward the figure. "And you?"
"I made a different mistake."
The answer surprised him.
The Origin Custodian looked toward the two twins.
"I believed that separating Genesis and Oblivion would give existence enough time to recover. I believed that one day someone would reunite them naturally."
Seraphina’s expression changed. "But that never happened."
"No."
The figure lowered its head slightly.
"The separation became history. History became religion. Religion became law. Eventually, almost everyone forgot that Genesis and Oblivion had ever been one cycle."
Azrael understood.
"And the Tower?"
"The Tower was created to prevent understanding from disappearing completely."
The chamber changed again.
They saw countless people entering the Tower throughout history. Some reached only the early floors. Others went farther. A few reached places neither twin had yet seen. Every challenger left behind something different: a technique, an insight, a memory, a decision, a lesson.
The Tower preserved them all.
Not their names.
Not their power.
Their understanding.
Seraphina looked around quietly.
"So this entire place was built to preserve what the realms kept forgetting."
"Yes."
Azrael looked toward the Origin Custodian. "Then why bring us here?"
"Because the Tower could preserve the past, but it could not determine the future."
The figure raised its hand.
The entire chamber disappeared.
Azrael and Seraphina suddenly found themselves standing before two enormous doors.
One was golden.
The other was black.
The golden door displayed countless forms of life. The black door displayed worlds reaching their natural conclusions.
Between them was a narrow path.
The Origin Custodian spoke one final time.
"You have learned what Genesis is. You have learned what Oblivion is. Now decide what they should become."
Seraphina looked toward Azrael.
He looked back.
Neither moved.
There was no pressure forcing them to choose.
No countdown.
No enemy.
No reward waiting behind either door.
For the first time, the Tower had given them something more difficult than a battle.
It had given them responsibility.
Seraphina finally spoke.
"I don’t think we should choose one."
Azrael smiled faintly.
"I was thinking the same thing."
She turned toward the two doors.
"Genesis shouldn’t exist without an ending."
"And Oblivion shouldn’t exist without something worth preserving."
They stepped forward together.
Instead of opening either door, Azrael placed his hand between them.
Seraphina placed hers over his.
The golden and black doors began to tremble.
Their powers spread outward, but instead of colliding, they moved around one another.
Genesis created.
Oblivion ended.
Creation followed destruction.
Destruction made room for creation.
The cycle began turning again.
The Origin Custodian watched in silence.
Then, for the first time, its featureless face seemed almost peaceful.
"You understand."
The Tower shook.
Not violently.
It felt more like a vast structure finally releasing a breath it had held for an eternity.
The two doors vanished.
The white chamber returned.
Then the Tower System appeared.
[Floor 39 Complete.]
[Final Understanding Confirmed.]
Genesis and Oblivion are not opposing paths.
They are complementary forces within existence.
The cycle has been understood.
Azrael looked at Seraphina.
"That was the final trial."
"No," she replied.
He raised an eyebrow.
She smiled.
"I think the Tower still has one thing left to show us."
As if responding to her words, a staircase appeared.
Unlike every previous staircase, this one did not continue upward into darkness.
It led directly toward a massive circular chamber visible above them.
At the entrance were two words.
FINAL FLOOR.
Marcus let out a long breath.
"Finally."
Ryan laughed. "I thought we’d never get there."
Caelan smiled as they began climbing.
Even Azrael couldn’t deny the relief he felt.
The Tower had changed all of them.
They had entered seeking strength.
They were leaving with something far more valuable.
Understanding.
When they reached the top, the final chamber opened before them.
There was no guardian.
No puzzle.
No battlefield.
At the center stood a massive crystal pillar containing thousands of glowing fragments.
Memories.
Every challenger who had ever entered the Tower had left something behind.
The Tower had preserved them.
Azrael stepped closer.
One fragment floated toward him.
Inside it was the image of a young swordsman learning to fight without relying on his weapon.
Another moved toward Seraphina.
Inside was a healer choosing to save a single wounded person rather than chase glory by saving thousands.
Then countless others appeared.
Every lesson.
Every failure.
Every discovery.
Every choice.
Seraphina looked at Azrael.
"This is what the Tower really wanted us to see."
Azrael nodded.
"The journey wasn’t about reaching the top."
The Tower System appeared for the final time.
[Final Floor – The Legacy]
Objective: Leave your understanding behind.
The Tower preserves knowledge.
Every challenger contributes to what comes next.
What will you leave behind?
Azrael thought about everything he had learned.
Resonance.
Instinct.
Strength.
Oblivion.
His path had never been about becoming the strongest person in existence.
Seraphina thought about Genesis.
Life.
Protection.
Creation.
She had learned that saving someone did not always mean preventing their suffering.
Sometimes it meant standing beside them when suffering could not be prevented.
They looked at each other.
Then they placed their hands against the crystal.
Azrael allowed a fragment of his understanding to enter it.
Seraphina did the same.
The crystal illuminated the entire chamber.
A new memory appeared.
Two figures standing together.
One surrounded by black.
The other surrounded by gold.
The image was not of their past.
It was a record of what they had chosen to become.
The Tower System delivered its final message.
[Legacy Recorded.]
[Twin Understanding Preserved.]
[Tower Completion Condition Fulfilled.]
[All participants have completed the Tower.]
[Tower Arc Complete.]
The message remained for several seconds before fading.
Then the Tower began opening.
A massive gate appeared ahead of them, revealing sunlight on the other side.
Real sunlight.
The first they had seen in what felt like an eternity.
Seraphina smiled.
"We’re going home."
Azrael looked toward the opening.
"Yes."
The group began walking toward the exit.
Nobody knew exactly what awaited them beyond it.
But for once, that uncertainty didn’t bother Azrael.
The Tower had taught him that not everything needed to be known before taking the next step.
He and Seraphina crossed the threshold together.
Behind them, the Tower remained silent.
Its purpose had been fulfilled.
Its memories would remain.
Its lessons would remain.
And somewhere within its endless halls, the understanding left behind by two twins had become part of the knowledge that future challengers might one day discover.
But Azrael and Seraphina were already looking forward.
Their Tower journey was over.
Their real journey was only beginning.
