Session 38 – I’m so tired of killing
I sniffled and swiped at the tears on my cheeks as I heard horns and shouting. I sat up on the bed and looked to the door. I could hear footsteps as people ran past. I slipped my boots back on and crept over to the door. It creaked open as I touched it. Well then, it wasn't even locked. I actually felt a bit insulted at that. The coast looked clear so I tip-toed down the hallway.
The tap of my boots on the cold stone floor echoed down the hallway, slowed only by the expensive tapestries hung every hundred feet along the walls. There was no theme or pattern to the tapestries, they seemed to have been chosen only to project the appearance of wealth. It wasn't really a castle, but I was gonna count it anyway. This was my first castle!
My enthusiasm of exploring an almost castle faded quickly, because I really hate being by myself. And yet somehow, I had been alone most of my life. I wrapped my arms around myself. There's no one to talk to and I felt very exposed with no way to defend myself. I just wanted to go home. Home with Paz and never have to think about HIM again. But he's a god. There's no escaping him. And I knew that I hadn't seen the last of him. The tears threatened to run free again. Fuck! I hated that he held this much power over me; both literally and emotionally.
In my more immediate predicament, I needed to find a weapon. I can do this, I believe in me. And.. now I'm talking to myself. Like, I do that a lot I feel like, but this felt different; nervous and desperate. I blew out a heavy sigh.
This hallway felt endless. I chose a door at random and opened it. A chef looked up at me from her stove.
"Your lemon squares and hot cocoa are excellent." I gave her a thumbs up.
"T-thank you? Who are you exactly?" She picked up a ladle wearily.
My shoulders slumped. "I don't even know any more. I was a chef. I didn't have any family, but I had a few friends. I was.. not happy, I guess, but content? Life was simple. And then I get dragged into this world and I'm running and killing and.. and..." My voice cracked and the tears came again. And getting violated by gods. Fuck, I felt so dirty. I really wanted to scrub my skin off, but even thinking about the bath made my stomach heave.
She hesitated for a moment, completely baffled, but then moved over and shut the kitchen door. "So, you're here to work with me?"
I snorted through my nose. "Not exactly. I'm actually here to rob your boss." I sucked in my lip and not for the first time, reflected on how I needed to think more before I spoke. I looked at the ladle in her hand and realized she was better armed than I was. I decided it didn't matter. I was so tired.
She raised the ladle threateningly. "I don't want anything to do with that! Get out of here." Yeah. That's fair. No need to drag her into my mess.
I trudged back out into the hall and sighed. I opened another door to a room with six beds. A man sitting on one of the beds with a chain shirt next to him was pulling on boots. He looked up and we stared at each other, our eyes locked in mortal combat. This was another face that I was going to see in my nightmares. The face of the next man I would kill. He was young, but already scruffy. The look of a man who's small number of years had been difficult and had forced him to make hard choices to survive. The thread of tension snapped and I lunged for him as he scrambled for his sword.
We tumbled together over the far side of the bed, swearing and punching as we fell. He grabbed a fistful of my hair, pulling my ponytail loose. The sword skittered across the floor and I landed on top of him. My blonde hair spilled in a curtain around us, and the moment seemed to freeze in time for a heartbeat. He grabbed my hips and launched me with his knee. I fell over his head, my face smashing into the floor. I tasted blood and rolled to my knees.
I blindly kicked behind me and was rewarded with a grunt of pain. I spun around, sweeping my tail low as I went. His knees knocked together as my tail collided with them and he fell sideways back onto the floor.
"Fucking bitch!" He roared and dove for me. I squealed and kicked but my boot missed and he landed awkwardly on top of me. I felt a sharp pain in my knee. I tried to roll him off, but he was too heavy. He grunted in pain as my tail whipped against his side, leaving a nasty welt. He scrambled to secure his leverage, pinning my legs under him as his elbow connected with my face. Stars exploded behind my eyes and my vision blurred.
"Fuck you!" I thrashed and clawed at him, drawing blood and leaving jagged red lines across his face. He caught my hands. I gasped as fear and panic surged up through me, choking off all thought except to escape. I thrashed even harder, bucking every way I could in a desperate attempt to get him off me. His elbow collided with my face again and my movements slowed. I coughed up blood, wheezing for breath and struggling to stay conscious.
He grinned down at me; the satisfied smirk of someone who knows he's won. His hands closed around my throat and tightened. My hands, already sluggish, swollen, and dulled from pain, pounded weakly at his chest. My arms fell down to my sides as the light faded. My fingers touched steel. I desperately grabbed it and used the very last of my strength to swing it up. The man's laugh frozen on his face as his own sword buried itself up into his side.
