Chapter 208: Age of Forgotten II

Kaiser thought for a moment before asking another question.

"Before we discuss the legacy, can you tell me more about the Age of the Forgotten? What exactly was this place, and what happened here?"

For a brief moment, the woman remained silent.

When she finally spoke, the amusement that had previously filled her voice was gone. Instead, there was a faint trace of nostalgia, as though she were remembering a time that had passed so long ago that even the memories themselves had begun to fade.

[The Age of the Forgotten... It was once an age of unparalleled glory, a time when the Gods walked among the heavens and countless divine civilizations flourished throughout the realms.]

[This place was known as the Divine Sanctuary, the home of the Forgotten Gods. It was a realm where magnificent divine palaces stood tall enough to pierce the heavens, where rivers of divine energy flowed endlessly across the land, and where the laws of existence could be studied and comprehended by those fortunate enough to dwell here.]

[Even the weakest beings who lived within this sanctuary possessed opportunities that ordinary mortals could scarcely imagine. With access to divine energy and the knowledge left behind by the Gods, they could cultivate powers that would appear miraculous to the outside world.]

Kaiser glanced across the seemingly endless grassland surrounding him.

No matter how far he looked, he could see nothing but green grass stretching toward the distant horizon. There were no towering palaces, no traces of ancient cities, and certainly no rivers overflowing with divine energy.

’This place? It looks like an ordinary grassland. Where are all the things she’s talking about?’

As though sensing his confusion, the woman continued.

[What thou seest now is but the remains of a world that hath long since perished. The palaces have crumbled into dust, the rivers of divine energy have run dry, and the lands that once flourished beneath the protection of the Gods have been reduced to what thou seest before thee.]

[Even the names of those who once ruled this realm have vanished from the memories of the living. Their achievements, their civilizations, and the countless lives they protected have all been swallowed by the passage of time.]

Her voice grew quieter as she continued.

[Yet this sanctuary was not always so desolate. There was a time when it stood among the greatest realms in existence, a place where the Gods gathered to explore the mysteries of creation, comprehend the laws governing all things, and pursue truths that lay beyond the understanding of ordinary beings.]

[It was a place of knowledge, power, and endless possibilities. A place where even the Gods believed that the secrets of existence could eventually be unraveled.]

She paused briefly.

[But even the Gods were not beyond the reach of calamity.]

Kaiser listened carefully. Until now, he had only known that the woman wanted revenge against those responsible for the destruction of this place. He had not expected its past to be so extraordinary.

If even Gods had gathered here to study the mysteries of existence, then the Divine Sanctuary must once have possessed knowledge far beyond anything available in the present age.

And yet, all of it had disappeared.

"What happened? Was this place attacked by another civilization?"

[An attack? Hmph. If it had been nothing more than an invasion, the Divine Sanctuary would not have fallen into such ruin.]

A trace of coldness entered the woman’s voice.

[The calamity that befell this realm was far greater than any war between civilizations. It was an event that shook the very foundations of existence itself. An enemy emerged from beyond the boundaries known to the Gods, bringing forth powers that even they struggled to comprehend.]

[They were known as the Outer Beings.]

Kaiser narrowed his eyes.

’The Outer Beings... So, those are the ones she mentioned earlier.’

He recalled her explanation about the Cosmic System being a cage. If these Outer Beings were responsible for the downfall of the Gods, then there was a good chance that the system and the ancient war were connected.

However, he still lacked enough information to understand how everything fit together.

The woman continued speaking.

[The Outer Beings were unlike the enemies the Gods had faced before. They did not seek to conquer a single world, rule over a collection of realms, or establish an empire. Such ambitions were insignificant compared to their true purpose.]

[Wherever their influence reached, the natural order began to distort. The laws that governed life, death, space, time, and countless other aspects of existence became unstable. Worlds that had existed for countless ages began to collapse, while the very principles that held reality together were twisted beyond recognition.]

[Their presence alone was enough to bring calamity upon entire civilizations. And the longer they remained within a realm, the more deeply their influence spread.]

Kaiser frowned.

If the woman’s words were accurate, these Outer Beings were not simply powerful enemies. They were something that could threaten the fundamental laws of the world itself.

Even the strongest mortals he knew would be insignificant before such an existence.

"Then the Gods fought against them?"

[Indeed. When the threat became impossible to ignore, the Gods united for the first time in an effort to protect existence from destruction.]

[They gathered the strength of their civilizations, called upon their divine laws, and unleashed powers capable of shaking entire realms. Countless divine races joined the war, each contributing whatever strength they possessed.]

[The battle continued for an age beyond mortal reckoning. The heavens trembled, stars were extinguished, and countless realms were torn apart. The boundaries separating existence from nothingness were shattered, while the laws governing entire worlds were damaged beyond repair.]

[It was a war in which even the Gods, beings who had once believed themselves capable of overcoming any obstacle, were forced to confront the possibility of their own destruction.]

Kaiser remained silent, trying to imagine the scale of such a conflict.

He had already encountered powerful beings and witnessed battles that could devastate entire regions. However, the war described by the woman existed on a completely different level.

If entire realms had been destroyed during the conflict, then the power of those involved must have surpassed anything he could currently comprehend.

Yet, despite all that strength, the Gods had still failed to destroy their enemies.

The woman’s next words confirmed his suspicion.

[Despite their combined might, the Gods discovered that the Outer Beings could not be completely destroyed by ordinary means. Every victory came at a terrible cost, and the longer the war continued, the more existence itself suffered.]

[They soon understood that continuing the battle would only bring about the destruction they had sought to prevent. Even if they managed to defeat their enemies eventually, there might be nothing left to protect.]

Her voice became heavier.

[Thus, the Gods were faced with a choice. They could continue fighting until everything was destroyed, or sacrifice what remained of their power to imprison the Outer Beings and prevent their influence from spreading further.]

[In the end, they chose the latter.]

Kaiser slowly narrowed his eyes.

"And the Cosmic System is one of those prisons?"

[One of them, yes.]

The answer came without hesitation.

Kaiser fell silent for several seconds.
