Chapter 160: Mjolnir’s Anger
"Mjolnir’s been with me for thousands of years, and I’ve never once had to repair it. It’s probably just acting up. Don’t worry. I’ll take it back and have someone look at it," Thor said with an awkward laugh, though even he didn’t sound convinced.
But what exactly was Mjolnir? A divine weapon, it was one of the strongest in all of Asgard, and to Thor, it was nothing short of the best of the best.
In Thor’s mind, much of his success in the wars he’d fought across the Nine Realms could be credited to that hammer. He even thought, without Mjolnir, his combat strength would drop by at least fifty percent.
As if it could hear his thoughts, the hammer in his hand gave a faint vibration.
Thor shared a bond with Mjolnir that went beyond words. He had no choice but to concede silently, ’Sixty percent.’
The hammer immediately began to glow with golden light.
’Alright, seventy percent.’
Seeing that the hammer was still dissatisfied, Thor bargained, ’Eighty percent... No, ninety. That’s as high as it goes, I contributed too.’
Only then did Mjolnir finally settle down. The light faded, and it quieted down.
Seeing everyone staring at him in confusion, Thor explained, "There’s really something wrong with Mjolnir, seriously."
The Mjolnir in his hand flared with light again. If it could talk, it would definitely scream that it was being framed.
It didn’t want to be lifted by Daniel either. That man was greedy, selfish, arrogant, and ignorant. It had no idea how he possessed such terrifying strength.
It had tried to resist, but it was useless. The guy was simply too strong, so what was it supposed to do?
And now Thor was trying to pin the whole thing on it. Unhappy, the hammer vibrated violently in Thor’s grip.
’What are you doing? You’re making me look like an idiot!?’ Thor thought to it.
The hammer sent its outrage straight back to him.
’You’re upset? I’m furious. We’ve been together for thousands of years, and this is how you treat me? You betrayed me.’
Thor felt like this had to be the unluckiest day of his life. Never again, he was never going out on this date again.
He had already been through one disaster after another, and now even his hammer had abandoned him, it was devastating.
Loki spoke up at that moment.
"Let me try."
He had always been obsessed with Mjolnir, but the hammer had never given him the slightest bit of attention. Now that it actually seemed to be having issues and flashing with light, he took the chance to fulfill his wish.
Today, he was going to lift this hammer and throw it as far away as he could. Loki reached out and grabbed the handle while Thor was still dazed and effortlessly pulled the hammer from his hand.
And then... there was nothing.
There was no triumphant moment, no dramatic display of strength. Instead, Loki was yanked straight down to the ground by the hammer, nearly wrenching his back in the process.
"Ow!" Loki cried out in pain, completely baffled.
’What the hell just happened?’ he thought.
’What’s going on?’ Sif and the Warriors Three were just as stunned. It was one twist after another.
At first, they were shocked that Daniel could lift Mjolnir. Then Thor claimed there was something wrong with the hammer. And now Loki had grabbed it and immediately been dragged to the ground.
So, was there actually some problem with the hammer or not? They were deeply confused, but also a bit relieved.
Luckily, Loki had gone first. Otherwise, one of them might have been the one getting slammed into the ground.
As Thor’s good friends, they had always been curious about Mjolnir. Under normal circumstances, none of them could lift it. But if Thor was telling the truth and the hammer really had an issue, then maybe they had a chance.
They could finally find out what it felt like to hold Mjolnir. And, of course, they could take a picture and go back to Asgard bragging about it.
After all, everyone in Asgard knew that no one could lift Mjolnir except Thor. If any of them managed to pull it off, they’d have a story to tell for the rest of their lives.
Even though the hammer was small and didn’t look all that imposing, it was still Mjolnir. What Asgardian wouldn’t want to lift it?
.....
Watching Loki get up in pain, Thor said awkwardly, "Well... looks like there’s nothing wrong with it after all."
A murderous look flashed through Loki’s eyes, that had really hurt. His armor was already heavy and rigid, so getting slammed into the ground while wearing it had been anything but pleasant.
"It must be because the two of us are cut from the same cloth. We’re both selfless, noble, and virtuous, so Mjolnir recognized that in me and allowed me to lift it," Daniel said, lying through his teeth.
There was no way he could admit that he’d lifted the hammer through sheer brute force. Wouldn’t that just make it sound like he was some kind of muscle-bound brute with no moral character?
Daniel was a man who aspired to be good. Other people failing to lift Mjolnir was perfectly understandable. But someone as morally impeccable as him? There was no way he could fail.
"Hahaha!" Thor laughed loudly, mostly to hide what he was really thinking. He patted Daniel on the shoulder and said, "Exactly! You have a heart of gold, just like me. That’s why Mjolnir accepted you. And to celebrate our shared virtues, I invite you to Asgard. We should celebrate properly, and besides, you helped us out today."
Thor knew there was another possibility, but he just couldn’t bring himself to believe it.
’How could anyone possibly have that kind of physical strength? That’s impossible!’
As far as Thor was concerned, Asgard was one of the greatest powers in the universe. The only reason it hadn’t grown into an empire on the scale of the universe’s greatest powers was because his father had never wanted to achieve that kind of power through endless bloodshed and slaughter.
Thor had always believed Asgardians were the strongest. If an Asgardian couldn’t do something, then surely there couldn’t be anyone who could.
Odin had protected Thor too well. Or perhaps he’d simply kept him too sheltered from reality.
"Sure," Daniel agreed. He was already planning to head to Asgard, so staying there for a few days wasn’t a problem, and taking the Bifrost back would certainly be more convenient.
.....
Asgard — Odin’s Palace
Odin sat across from his wife, Queen Frigga.
"The future has changed again," Frigga said.
A powerful sorceress in her own right, Frigga possessed an extraordinary command of magic and knew countless spells.
She had even taught Loki everything he knew about magic, though Loki had apparently taken a different path, often preferring deception, weapons, or a more direct approach when magic wasn’t enough.
"Yes," Odin said. "But who can truly see the future clearly?" He paused. "Even the All-Father cannot interfere with the flow of time."
Compared with Frigga, Odin looked ancient.
His once-powerful frame was covered in the signs of age. White hair crowned his head, deep wrinkles lined his face, and his beard had turned completely gray. An eyepatch covered his one eye, giving him an appearance just like Fury.
"There’s something else," Frigga said hesitantly. "Ragnarok seems to have disappeared. I can no longer see it."
Odin’s expression changed.
"Is that so?"
He had grown old. These days, he rarely drew upon his divine power. His power continued to grow, but his aging body could no longer withstand the strain.
Still, after hearing Frigga’s words, he endured the discomfort and summoned his power once more.
His remaining eye stared into the void. For a moment, it seemed as though his gaze pierced through the endless expanse of time itself. Then he closed his eye.
After a long silence, Odin finally spoke, "It’s him."
"Who?" Frigga asked.
"Do you remember what happened five years ago? I was in the Odinsleep when I suddenly awakened."
"I remember." Frigga nodded. "It frightened me. I thought something had gone wrong with your body, as you shouldn’t have awakened at that time."
"It was because of this man." Odin raised a hand, and an image of Daniel appeared in the air between them.
Frigga stared at it and asked, "Who is he?"
"His name is Daniel Danvers, a Midgardian."
Odin’s expression grew solemn.
"Five years ago, he suddenly released an enormous surge of energy. The force was powerful enough to destroy Asgard. It startled me awake."
"From that day onward, I noticed that Asgard’s future had changed. I could no longer see what lay ahead."
"How is that possible?" Frigga asked, voicing the same disbelief Thor and the others had felt.
"I don’t know either." Odin’s gaze remained fixed on Daniel’s image.
"But he is extremely powerful. Even now, with my divine power greater than it has ever been, I can’t say for certain who would win if I fought him."
Odin was old, after all. His body could no longer withstand the full extent of his power, and age had tempered the once-warlike fury within him.
Had this been Odin in his youth, he wouldn’t have wasted time wondering whether he was outmatched. He would have fought first, as he had never been the sort of man to admit defeat before the battle even began.
In his youth, Odin hadn’t been much different from Thor. But living for thousands of years had taught him one thing: there was no shame in being cautious.
Frigga frowned, and couldn’t help asking, "But what does this have to do with Ragnarok?""
"Because that man is with our son right now," Odin said slowly.
