Chapter 159: Thor’s Shock
"Uh..." Daniel didn’t know how to put it, as saying it out loud would be pretty embarrassing for Thor.
After thinking it over for a moment, Daniel decided it was better to be straightforward.
"Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Daniel Danvers. I’m a human from Earth, and I’m twenty-seven years old..."
The moment he said those words, strange expressions appeared on Thor and his men faces.
"Twenty-seven years old?" Thor repeated, staring at Daniel in disbelief.
At the same time, he was dying of embarrassment inside. He had just bragged about how young he was and how much room he still had to grow, only to have reality prove him wrong moments later.
Thor was screaming internally. He strongly suspected that Daniel was actually far older than twenty-seven, a primordial monster hiding behind a youthful appearance. Otherwise, how could anyone explain his ridiculous level of strength?
This was just too freakish. The universe was vast, and there were countless worlds with advanced technology. For all Thor knew, Daniel could be some ancient monster tens of thousands of years old who was merely pretending to be young.
As for Earth? Thor felt the name sounded faintly familiar, but he couldn’t quite place it at the moment.
"Yep, twenty-seven," Daniel confirmed.
"Are your years on Earth different from standard cosmic years?" Thor asked, still unwilling to give up hope. "Perhaps one Earth year is equal to several hundred or even a thousand years elsewhere?"
"Nope. Just regular years," Daniel replied. "Although..."
Thor’s eyes lit up slightly.
Daniel quickly continued, "Although saying I’m twenty-seven isn’t entirely accurate. I’ll be turning twenty-eight soon. Let me think... Yeah, it’s only a few days away."
Daniel’s birthday was truly special because he was born on the very first day of the year, January 1st.
"..."
Thor was rendered utterly speechless, thoroughly struck down. He was hundreds of years older than this guy, yet he was apparently nowhere near as strong.
It felt terrible. Right then, the woman standing beside them spoke. "Earth? Isn’t that Midgard?"
"Sif?" Thor turned toward her.
"I remember the humans of Midgard call their realm Earth," Sif said, looking at Daniel.
"Exactly," Daniel said with a smile. "That’s where I’m from. We have plenty of legends about you guys back on Earth."
"How is that possible?" Thor asked skeptically. "I’ve been to Midgard before. The humans there are incredibly weak. They’re nothing compared to us Asgardians."
Daniel simply chuckled and shrugged. He had no intention of explaining. After Thor and the others had taken a moment to process everything, Daniel spoke again.
"Why don’t you guys introduce yourselves? We have legends about all of you on Earth, but Thor’s hammer is the only thing that really helps me connect the dots. Honestly, I can’t recognize the rest of you."
Loki stood right beside Thor, while Daniel, naturally, acted as though he didn’t know him at all.
In reality, Daniel recognized basically all of them. He was simply playing dumb. If he started calling everyone by name, it would be difficult to explain how he knew so much about them.
"Sif."
"Volstagg."
"Hogun."
"Fandral."
Finally, Loki, still wearing his distinctive horned helmet, stepped forward.
"Loki, God of Mischief," he introduced himself. Then he raised an eyebrow. "Have you really never heard of me?"
Loki felt deeply uncomfortable inside. At this point, he still had no idea that he was adopted. He genuinely believed he was Odin’s biological son, just like Thor. So why was Thor so much more famous than him?
Daniel had recognized Thor almost immediately, yet he hadn’t recognized Loki at all. The realization cast an even darker shadow over Loki’s heart.
It had always been like this, even when they were children.
Thor was all muscle and no brains, completely unsuited to inherit the throne of the All-Father. He was far better suited to be a warrior on the front lines, and yet, everyone continued to treat him as the heir.
I’m far smarter than him. A king should be wise, not some mindless brute.
Loki envied Thor, yet at the same time, he genuinely loved his brother.
His feelings toward Thor had always been complicated, an inseparable mixture of affection, jealousy, admiration, and resentment.
He wanted to prove himself. He wanted everyone to see that he was just as worthy, if not more worthy, than Thor. But no matter what he did, everyone’s attention always seemed to gravitate toward Thor.
Loki was left standing in his brother’s shadow, unseen and forgotten. So, love and hatred intertwined in his heart.
"I’ve heard of you. I’ve definitely heard of you," Daniel said with a chuckle. "It’s just a little hard to connect the name with the person. After all, not everyone walks around carrying Mjolnir."
Hearing Daniel mention Mjolnir, Thor proudly raised the hammer in his hand.
This was his beloved prized possession, a divine weapon that not just anyone could wield. It was a symbol of his status and power.
Daniel might be powerful, but did he have Mjolnir? Nope.
Mjolnir was exclusive to him. Aside from Thor himself, who else could possibly lift it? Well, there was his father, Odin, of course.
Thor tightened his grip on Mjolnir.
’Mjolnir...’
Loki silently repeated the name in his mind, feeling even more irritated. He wanted to swing the hammer around too, but unfortunately, he couldn’t even lift it.
"I heard that no one can lift Mjolnir except its rightful wielder. Is that true?" Daniel asked curiously.
He was genuinely interested in the hammer.
Mjolnir was a weapon that recognized its wielder. Only someone possessing qualities such as courage, selflessness, and righteousness could lift it. Otherwise, it was impossibly heavy.
Daniel sighed inwardly. Even though he had made mistakes in the past, he always corrected them when he realized he was wrong. As far as he was concerned, he possessed all the virtues required to wield the hammer.
Hadn’t Thor himself made plenty of mistakes before? And hadn’t he been able to lift Mjolnir again after correcting them?
’I’m a pretty great guy, so surely I should be able to lift it,’ Daniel thought to himself.
In Daniel’s mind, he fully met all the virtuous criteria required to lift Mjolnir.
"Haha, of course."
Thor’s spirits immediately lifted when the conversation turned to his hammer.
"Mjolnir is one of the greatest weapons in Asgard. It was forged from the heart of a dying star. It can command the winds and rain, and even control thunder and lightning."
He proudly held up the hammer.
"More importantly, only someone deemed worthy by Mjolnir itself can lift it. And I am the one it has deemed worthy."
The moment Thor started talking about his hammer, his confidence returned. No matter how powerful Daniel was, he didn’t have Mjolnir. And if he couldn’t lift it, then what did all that strength matter?
Thor was secretly hoping Daniel would ask to try. If Daniel failed to lift the hammer and was dragged to the ground by its weight, Thor would finally have something to laugh about.
And, conveniently enough, Daniel walked straight into the trap.
"Mind if I give it a try?" Daniel asked.
The moment those words were spoken, Thor gloated internally while generously handing over his beloved hammer.
"Here you go." Then, as if offering a sincere warning, he added, "Be careful now. Don’t let it hurt you."
While offering a reminder on the surface, Thor was practically bursting with joy inside. Daniel was about to make a fool of himself, and he couldn’t wait to see it.
Thor didn’t really have anything against Daniel. It was just that Daniel’s flashy entrance had stolen the spotlight, effortlessly taking down his enemies and leaving Thor feeling a little overlooked. Now that Daniel was about to struggle with the hammer, Thor couldn’t help but feel a little better about the whole situation.
As for Daniel actually lifting the hammer? Thor didn’t believe it for a second.
Daniel took Mjolnir. His hand paused for a split second. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he casually tossed the hammer into the air a couple of times.
"Pretty light."
Daniel looked completely relaxed, but that was only on the surface. In reality, he was putting a considerable amount of strength into his arm.
Mjolnir hadn’t deemed him worthy.
That meant he wasn’t receiving any special assistance from the enchantment. He was simply bearing the hammer’s raw physical weight; the weight of a weapon forged from the heart of a star.
If Daniel hadn’t possessed such ridiculous physical strength, the hammer would have dragged him straight to the ground.
’This hammer has to be broken.’ Daniel thought to himself. ’How could it possibly fail to recognize an outstanding individual like me?’
Thor had initially tried to act nonchalant, but seeing Daniel take Mjolnir and casually lift it up, he couldn’t hold his composure any longer.
He immediately snatched the hammer back from Daniel’s hands, bringing it close to his eyes to inspect it thoroughly while muttering under his breath.
"That makes no sense. Did something go wrong with it?"
To make sure, Thor swung Mjolnir through the air a few times. Everything seemed perfectly normal, yet Thor’s expression grew more awkward with each swing.
"Yeah, something must’ve gone wrong with it," Thor said with an awkward laugh, trying to play it off.
