Chapter 139: Quiet Reflection
Night fell.
The sky shimmered with countless stars. Unlike Earth, Yaka had three natural satellites, and all three full moons rested gracefully above the horizon, bathing the world in silver light.
The universe was vast, and there was no shortage of wonders. The Yaka people could technically be considered a race blessed with superhuman abilities, though their powers were far from suited for battle.
Nature Attunement, that was their power.
The Yaka were an entirely female race, and every member possessed extraordinary beauty. They were nature’s chosen children, the elves of the forest, perfectly in tune with the world around them.
Their ability granted them a deep affinity with plant life, allowing them to maintain a faint, subtle connection with flora. However, it was far too weak to ever be utilized in battle; it was only useful for growing and nurturing vegetation.
They were the absolute best gardeners in the cosmos.
Since the city had been heavily damaged and hadn’t been cleared out yet, Daniel and the others spent the evening in the forest, where the Yaka people hosted a massive bonfire gathering.
At this moment, Quill was thoroughly immersed in the crowd of girls, dancing right along with them. The group sang and danced together, creating an exceptionally lively atmosphere that seemed to successfully wash away a great deal of the grief from earlier that day.
"Aren’t you going to join the dance?"
Watching the figures twisting and moving by the bonfire, Nadia, the Queen of the Yaka people, questioned Daniel.
Daniel offered a slight smile. "No, thanks. I’m not very good at it."
Nadia didn’t push the matter further. Gazing at the scene filled with joy and laughter, she spoke with a look of pure infatuation.
"This is wonderful. Our people can finally enjoy peace again, living a serene, happy life."
"Yeah, it really is nice."
At this moment, Daniel felt a sudden wave of emotion welling up inside. "Your way of life is quite enviable, completely carefree. I hope you can continue living like this forever."
Staring at the smiling faces of the Yaka citizens, Daniel began to reflect deeply.
’Over these past five years... has my ego grown too large? Have I let my power get to my head? Have I lost sight of who I truly am?’ Daniel wondered to himself.
’The life I wanted to live was one of absolute freedom and lack of restraint, but that freedom was never meant to be built upon the suffering of others.’
These past few years, Daniel had lived exceptionally pleasantly. He had witnessed countless bizarre, breathtaking sights across the universe, encountered all sorts of alien races, and gazed upon various cosmic wonders.
However, he seemed to have become somewhat reckless and unscrupulous. Precisely because he viewed aliens as inherently different from him, as entirely separate species, Daniel had gradually begun to view life with a sense of cold indifference.
’What was my initial purpose?’ Daniel asked himself.
’To enjoy life, and to keep my power under control.’ he answered.
’Why is it that on Earth, I can successfully maintain a deep respect for every single life, yet out in the cosmos, I completely failed to do so?’
Over the course of five years, Daniel had witnessed countless battles across the universe. He never bothered keeping track of the exact number of lives affected by his actions, but the weight of those events had slowly begun to settle on his shoulders.
The conflict on Hala, the Kree homeworld, was the one that haunted him the most.
Billions of people had been caught in a war they never asked for. The Kree forces had continued their attacks without regard for the lives of their own citizens, using their own people as pieces on a battlefield. Daniel had fought against them, but he couldn’t deny that his choices had contributed to the destruction left behind.
The same was true for the countless battles that followed. Enemy fleets had been defeated, worlds had been changed forever, and countless lives had been affected by conflicts that grew far beyond a simple fight between individuals.
It was too much to ignore. Thinking back on everything, Daniel felt a sudden chill run through him.
’How many people have been affected because of my actions?’
A deep unease began to creep into his heart.
’When exactly did I start losing sight of myself?’
Daniel lowered his eyes, staring at his own hands.
They looked the same as always strong, steady, and familiar. His face was still the same face everyone recognized. Yet, for some reason, he felt like he was looking at a stranger.
’They fought against me, but did that truly make every one of them my enemy? How many of those lives had nothing to do with the choices that brought us here?’
Daniel fell silent.
’On Hala, my true enemy was the Supreme Intelligence. If I had defeated it first, perhaps things could have ended differently.
But the Kree forces refused to back down. They continued their attacks without hesitation, even knowing that their own people would be caught in the middle.
In the end, countless lives were affected by a war that should never have reached that point. No matter the circumstances, I still have to remember the weight of the power I carry.’
For the first time in years, Daniel stopped seeing himself as an unstoppable force and started seeing the consequences of being one. The power to protect and the power to destroy were often separated by only one choice.
’Did the ordinary Kree citizens truly have a personal grudge against me? Before this war, how many of them had even heard of Earth?’
’The Kree Empire had spent countless years expanding through conquest. They invaded worlds, seized their resources, crushed civilizations that resisted them, and left entire planets suffering under their rule. Countless races had lost their homes, their freedom, and their futures because of the empire’s ambitions.
In the end, their defeat brought freedom to many civilizations that had been oppressed for generations. Worlds that had lived under Kree control were finally given a chance to rebuild their own futures.’
’But even knowing that, I still can’t pretend the cost meant nothing. Those who ruled the empire made their choices. The armies that carried out their orders made theirs. But there were also ordinary people caught in the middle, people who had never personally wronged me.’
Where there are pacifists, there will inevitably be warmongers; there is no absolute right or wrong. In fact, even those civilizations invaded by the Kree might not necessarily remain peace-loving if they suddenly possessed immense power.
This world rarely features absolute right and wrong. One man’s hero is another man’s bitter enemy. When positions differ, are concepts like right versus wrong or good versus bad truly absolute?
For some unknown reason, a flood of profound thoughts suddenly erupted within Daniel’s mind at this exact moment.
"Somewhere along the way... my ego got bigger than it should have," Daniel muttered to himself.
’When did it start?’ He cast his mind back. ’It must have been right after Carol came back.’
Carol had returned to Earth, and the two of them had fought a massive battle. It was precisely during that encounter that Daniel underwent his ultimate metamorphosis.
Previously, although he was exceptionally strong, he still possessed distinct vulnerabilities. At the very least, he had no way of dealing with the Ancient One back then and actively chose to steer clear of her.
The vast majority of the Ancient One’s sorcery was completely ineffective against him, but when it came to magic involving the mind or the soul, Daniel possessed absolutely zero resistance.
Daniel still remembered how, when he had once gone looking for trouble with the Ancient One, his mind had suddenly gone blank for no apparent reason. Before he knew it, she had sent him on a grand tour of the multiverse.
Even now, thinking back on that experience left him with a lingering sense of dread.
Fortunately, the Ancient One had no malicious intent toward him. Otherwise, Daniel would’ve been completely screwed.
’Wait a minute.’ Daniel suddenly thought. ’A sudden daze?’
He remembered that, under normal circumstances, there was no way Carol should have been able to punch him straight into the core of the sun. Yet somehow, he had fallen into a strange daze at that exact moment, giving Carol the perfect opportunity to take advantage of it.
"The Ancient One." Daniel whispered under his breath.
That bald woman... she was hundreds of years old, yet she could still hold a grudge like nobody else.
Daniel remembered it clearly now, the strange smile on the Ancient One’s face when she said she was looking forward to his next encounter with Carol.
She had been enjoying every second of it.
’Seriously? You’re hundreds of years old, and you’re still this petty?’ Daniel thought. ’Your ability to hold a grudge is honestly impressive.’
Daniel complained about the Ancient One in his mind.
’Once I get back, I’m making a trip to Kamar-Taj and stealing your favorite antique teapot. Let’s see how you’ll manage without your precious little teapot after that.’
Daniel thought viciously to himself, knowing the Ancient One’s teapot was an exceptional treasure.
Daniel quickly brushed the thoughts of the Ancient One aside, continuing to contemplate why he had transformed into this state.
’It seems that after my transformation, when I realized I no longer had any obvious weaknesses and that there were hardly any opponents in this universe who could truly challenge me, my ego started growing out of control.
Back then, I was much more restrained. I lived like an ordinary law-abiding citizen and never used my abilities to harm innocent people or abuse my power. The only exceptions were Wakanda and that Hydra base.’
With those thoughts, a genuine smile surfaced on Daniel’s face as he recalled his past life.
’Back then, I was incredibly happy too.’
The more he analyzed it, the more Daniel realized that he had been wrong.
If he continued down this path, his emotions would only grow more and more detached. On Earth, at the very least, he had family and friends to keep his power in check. But out in the cosmos?
The only person who could barely qualify as a friend was Quill. And was he actually a good influence? Not even close. He was a disaster through and through.
’I can’t allow this to continue.’ Daniel said to himself. ’If I keep going down this path, I will only sink deeper and deeper, until eventually, I might not even care about my own family and friends.’
A strong desire to return home began to grow within Daniel’s heart.
Out in the vastness of space, Daniel had no one to keep him grounded. And with so many idiots constantly picking fights they couldn’t win, he’d had no choice but to defend himself, which had ended up causing more trouble than he ever intended.
’Once we’re done on Sakaar, I’m going straight back to Earth. The universe is way too chaotic, and there are way too many troublemakers out here. Honestly, someone like me is probably better off just staying home.’
