Chapter 138: Yaka’s Gratitude
Daniel took a few steps, then suddenly halted.
’Wait a minute. Am I stupid? I clearly won the fight, so why am I the one walking away?’
With that realization, he turned to the Chitauri soldiers trembling in the surrounding area and said, "In half an hour, I don’t want to see a single one of you remaining on Yaka."
Hearing this, the Chitauri soldiers scattered in a wild scramble, running back toward their spaceships without so much as looking back.
Still, they remained somewhat loyal. Before fleeing, they made sure to drag Thanos out of the crater and carry him along with them.
...
Watching Thanos’s fleet finally leave Yaka, the survivors embraced one another in overwhelming relief. They had made it through the catastrophe, but the joy of surviving was overshadowed by the grief of losing so many of their people. Holding each other tightly, they cried openly, mourning the fallen while giving thanks that they were still alive.
By this time, Quill had long since sprinted down from the spaceship, his stomach suddenly no longer hurting. Not long after Thanos was knocked unconscious, he had eagerly disembarked the vessel and run over to comfort the grieving, beautiful Yaka ladies.
By the time Daniel reached Quill, he found him comforting two grieving Yaka women. Quill held their hands gently, speaking to them in a calm, reassuring voice as he helped them through their loss.
"What are you two chatting about?" Daniel asked with a smile, currently in an exceptionally good mood.
It felt like playing a video game and suddenly realizing you were fully decked out in god-tier endgame gear, with completely overpowered stats. Then, when you reached the final boss far earlier than expected, you found out it couldn’t even survive your basic attacks.
After pummeling Thanos, Daniel now had absolutely no worries about the future. The Space Stone was securely in his possession, which meant Thanos could never possibly collect all six Infinity Stones. Without a complete version of the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos had no way of dealing with him.
’There’s really no helping it. It’s not like I wanted to be this powerful; I actually wanted a bit of a challenge or a setback. But my raw strength simply doesn’t allow it, so what can I do?’
Daniel couldn’t help feeling smug. The only reason he hadn’t finished Thanos off was because he wanted to see how far the guy could go, otherwise, it would all be too easy and far too boring.
Entering a dungeon only to instantly one-shot the boss offered absolutely no sense of accomplishment or satisfaction.
Upon seeing Daniel, the two beautiful Yaka ladies didn’t even bother wiping away their tears. They instantly flung Quill’s hands aside and rushed forward, reaching out to grasp Daniel’s hands.
Who was Daniel? Just how fast were his reflexes? He effortlessly dodged the hands of the two women, taking a swift step backward while eyeing them with a look of pure vigilance.
"What do you think you’re doing? Assault? Trying to take advantage of me? Let me tell you, I am not that kind of easy man. I have a girlfriend."
"They merely wish to express their profound gratitude toward you."
A highly melodious female voice drifted over from behind Daniel.
Turning his head around, he saw an exceptionally noble-looking Yaka woman standing there.
Although her once formal clothes were filthy and torn in several places, she still carried herself with the unmistakable air of someone powerful, someone who is used to being in command.
"And you are?" Daniel asked.
"Your Majesty." The two Yaka women bowed respectfully.
"My name is Nadia, the Queen of Yaka," Nadia said, forcing a warm smile onto her face despite the deep sorrow she felt.
"We are immensely grateful to you for saving us." Nadia took Daniel’s hand and gently pressed a kiss upon the back of it.
"Please remain on Yaka for a few days so we may properly repay you for your actions. Right now, this place is a bit ruined," Nadia remarked, casting a brief glance at the surrounding debris. "So, please do not mind the state of things."
Nadia spoke with complete sincerity, looking at Daniel with eyes as soft and gentle as still water.
"Haha."
More and more Yaka citizens slowly began gathering around their location. Watching all these beautiful ladies gazing at him with uniform looks of deep gratitude, Daniel felt a wave of secret gratification welling up inside.
’No wonder people choose to become superheroes.’ Daniel thought to himself. ’The looks of gratitude and adoration from the people really do make a person feel incredibly good. Especially when it’s entirely composed of beautiful women.’
While harboring those inner thoughts, Daniel maintained a humble expression on the surface, speaking politely.
"I was only doing what I believed was right, anyone else would’ve done the same."
"You give yourself too little credit. Strength like yours is rare enough, but strength alone isn’t what saved us. You chose to stand up for people you’d never met and risk everything for them, not everyone would have done that. You saved our entire race. To the Yaka people, you are a true hero."
For some reason, Daniel felt that the gaze Nadia directed toward him had grown somewhat burning.
As Daniel and Nadia conversed, Quill suddenly realized that he had been completely sidelined. Daniel had completely stolen all his thunder; right now, every single Yaka citizen’s gaze was fixed entirely upon Daniel.
Thus, he took a step forward. "Daniel, we should get going. I’ve fully rested up, so let’s resume our journey and head to Sakaar."
"He is?" Nadia inquired.
"My companion," Daniel explained.
"To be capable of acting as your companion, he must certainly be exceptionally powerful as well." Nadia directed her gaze onto Quill.
The two Yaka ladies whose hands Quill had been holding just moments ago also looked over at him.
Finding himself back in the spotlight, Quill flashed a grin, planting his hands on his hips as he said, "It’s alright, it’s alright. I usually don’t care much for raw violence; I am far more adept at utilizing my intellect."
"Then you must surely possess extraordinary wisdom," Nadia praised.
Hearing those words filled Quill with pure joy, and his face nearly broke into an enormous grin.
"Please stay on Yaka for a few days and allow us the chance to show our gratitude to both of you," Nadia said, continuing to persuade them to stay.
"Easy enough, easy enough," Quill chuckled.
"By the way, I do not know the names of our two heroes. Although we Yaka people live isolated in this remote corner, we still receive a fair amount of cosmic news. We wish for the entire universe to learn of your heroic deeds."
"Well, about that..." Quill and Daniel exchanged a brief glance, hesitating.
The reputation of the two of them was anything but good.
One could practically say they were completely infamous throughout the cosmos. If word of this got out, someone would definitely suspect that they had used physical threats to force the Yaka people to praise them.
The Yaka people simply didn’t care to follow external news; otherwise, they would have definitely known their grand reputations by now. Well, technically it was Star-Lord’s infamous reputation, since he took the fall for all the blame.
"There is no need for that," Daniel declined. "It was merely a small matter of helping out; there’s no need to make it known to everyone."
"Your heroic deeds ought to be spread across the universe. Furthermore, the one you defeated was Thanos himself."
Thanos had been famous for countless years, after all, and his recognition far surpassed Daniel and Quill’s.
"It’s really unnecessary," Daniel waved his hand. "We prefer to maintain a low profile, don’t we?" Daniel gave Quill a slight shove.
"Yeah, definitely." Quill nodded in agreement. He had just been staring blankly at one of the Yaka women, only snapping out of his daze when Daniel nudged him.
"We don’t care for showing off." Quill added.
Nadia carefully observed the expressions on Daniel and Quill’s faces. Seeing that they didn’t appear to be lying, she could only let the matter drop. Thus, she spoke up.
"Then could we at least learn the grand names of our two heroes? We wish to record your deeds directly into the history of Yaka, so that future generations will forever remember you both.
Please do not refuse; if it weren’t for you two, I truly shudder to think what would have become of our home in the future."
Quill hadn’t actually lifted a finger in the fight, but Nadia still included him anyway.
"Oh, how could I possibly be so bold." Daniel said with a smile, before immediately following up with, "My name is Daniel Danvers."
This was the first time Daniel had ever experienced such genuine gratitude. Dropping his aloof, distant facade entirely, he asked with a bright, sunny expression.
"By the way, do you guys take pictures? If you do, make sure you get my good side. Actually, forget that, make sure you capture my best side."
Daniel lowered his head to look down at his suit, noticing a small layer of dust on it.
"No, this suit has gotten dirty. I’m going to go change into a different set."
The moment the words left his mouth, he vanished into thin air, leaving behind a completely unsurprised Quill and a crowd of Yaka citizens staring at one another in utter bewilderment.
