House of The Dragon:The Rise of the Emperor of the Seven Kingdoms

Chapter 83 - 82 - The Game Is Brutal (II)

In House Velaryon’s tent.

"My lord, there has still been no movement from the king." A Velaryon soldier approached Corlys and whispered in a tone full of anger.

"And there won’t be." Before Corlys could answer, Rhaenys spoke in an emotionless tone. She seemed calm, but, whether it was Corlys or the guards around them, everyone felt a chill.

Rhaenys kept speaking in an emotionless tone. "He doesn’t care whether we knew or not. He doesn’t care if he’s the one to blame; he only cares about the Iron Throne and his successor. What we did crossed a line we shouldn’t have crossed.

"Because of your greed, our son is fighting for his life in that castle you built and value so much." Rhaenys looked at Corlys and said every word in a still emotionless tone. "Corlys, no matter how much money you have or how many ships you own, nothing but the Throne will satisfy that hunger for power inside you."

"Was it worth it?" Rhaenys asked in a calm tone, looking at the husband with whom she had shared a bed for ten whole years.

Corlys remained indifferent, or rather, he was calm. The calmer he was, the better he could understand what had happened. "You’re tired; you should sleep, Rhaenys."

Rhaenys’s eyebrows furrowed sharply; she finally showed a reaction, and that reaction was one of anger and fury. "You said sleep!?"

Rhaenys stood up and walked toward Corlys and spoke in a chilling tone. "How can I sleep knowing my son is fighting for his life while I sleep!? Tell me, Corlys, can you sleep?"

The guards just lowered their heads and wished they were deaf at that moment. Corlys was a proud man and, because of that, valued greatly the reputation he had built with his own hands. The guards already knew their fate was to sail the seas and rarely return home.

"I can sleep through storms that even your dragon could not fly through, so how could I not sleep at this moment?" Corlys looked at his furious wife and said in a calm tone, trying to soften the scene that was happening.

Rhaenys let out a laugh hearing those words. "Is that what this is about? Trying to belittle me by showing how strong and powerful you are? Do you think I’m exaggerating?"

"I regret marrying you," Rhaenys said, making Corlys’s expression change drastically. "If I had married Maekar or Daemon, they would have burned King’s Landing to avenge our son and not stood there scheming in a tent while our own son fights desperately for his life."

If Corlys’s face had been cold before, at this moment it was dark. Every word from Rhaenys made the proud Corlys furious. Impulsively, he raised his hand and slapped Rhaenys.

Slap!

The moment he gave the slap, Corlys deeply regretted it. He knew Rhaenys was worried and furious because of recent events; he should not have hurt her any further.

Rhaenys touched her own face with a disbelieving expression. She was a princess, born as the eldest daughter of the kingdom’s crown prince. Hit her? No, no one had ever even dared raise a hand to try to hit her.

Feeling the bitter taste of blood between her lips, Rhaenys looked at her husband with a cold look and turned around, walking toward the exit of the tent.

"Rhaenys, wait, that was a mistake on my part." Corlys grabbed Rhaenys’s arm and tried to explain, but the woman simply pulled free and left the tent without looking back.

"DAMN IT!!!!" Seeing this, Corlys exploded with fury; he started throwing everything to the floor while breaking some jars.

Not knowing what was happening in the tent, Rhaenys arrived where Meleys was and saw two other enormous dragons not far away. Vermithor and Silverwing.

Rhaenys knew it was an explicit threat from the king. However, she did not care about anything else; she just wanted to go to Driftmark to be by her son’s side.

Vermithor opened his eyes and blinked his double eyelids; he showed a cruel smile looking at the figure climbing onto the dragon. The bronze dragon raised his enormous body and got ready. If the red female dared to head toward his rider’s nest, he would kill her.

Silverwing had also already woken up and risen, looking at the female dragon with much more calm than her scaled companion. However, she too readied herself to attack should the red dragon dare to go toward the nest where her rider was.

Rhaenys noticed this but did not care. She settled into the saddle and grabbed the reins. Meleys rose from the ground and took flight.

Meleys was considered one of the fastest dragons in Westeros, easily surpassing Caraxes and Vhagar, which proved true in the next moment. The dragon quickly disappeared into the night sky like a scarlet arrow.

Vermithor almost showed a look of human disappointment on his scaled face and lay back down on the ground. Silverwing, being the good girl that she was, let out a long guttural sound and lay down beside him, her tail curling around Vermithor’s tail.

-

On the balcony, Jaehaerys watched the scene with a calm look. Although he could not see well because of the darkness, he could see the enormous shapes moving in the dark.

Jaehaerys let out a sigh and felt that things had been spiraling out of control ever since Maekar arrived in King’s Landing. His calm kingdom had ceased to exist the moment that brat appeared at the Red Keep. It almost felt like a curse.

However, looking in the direction Meleys had disappeared, Jaehaerys showed a satisfied smile. Although he had not managed to kill the dragon or cut off the boy’s ear, he had achieved something he considered quite satisfying.

Ruining his granddaughter’s marriage.

Jaehaerys wanted to see if Rhaenys would dare cross that dangerous line again.

"Look at that disgusting smile." Hearing the old woman’s voice behind him, Jaehaerys looked at Alysanne, who wore a white nightgown and appeared very calm.

"Before you accuse me, I did not order the boy killed." Jaehaerys would not explain his actions to anyone else on this planet, but Alysanne was not included on that list.

The look of anger on Alysanne’s face disappeared upon hearing those words. She knew better than anyone that her husband was too proud to lie about something like that.

"It was an accident; I only wanted the dragon dead and his ear to serve as a warning to Rhaenys, but, as you may have noticed, it was a complete disaster." Jaehaerys said in a calm tone, still with a touch of anger in his tone, remembering what had happened.

With Lyrios’s failure, Jaehaerys naturally sent for him to return but discovered his Master of whisperers had hanged himself.

Alysanne’s brow furrowed but relaxed the next moment. Better to lose an ear than to lose a life. She approached her husband, placed her hand on his chest, and looked directly into his eyes.

"That’s my husband, the proud king I know; he would never lower himself to kill a child."

Jaehaerys looked at his wife, who stared at him intently, and understood the implications in her words.

"I don’t know whether to feel offended that you think me so foolish or proud that you think me so brave, to the point of thinking I would dare kill Maekar and Gael’s son." Jaehaerys said in a powerless tone.

"That boy is insane." Jaehaerys spoke in a calm tone. "If I did to his son what I did to Rhaenys’s, he would not hesitate to mount Bahamut and burn the entire city of King’s Landing and everyone in it to create a funeral procession all the way to hell."

Jaehaerys truly would not do such a thing, not to Maekar, someone as impulsive as Daemon. Those impulsive men with dragons were the worst thing he wanted in his life, but he had gotten three of them in his lifetime. Maegor, Daemon, and Maekar.

Hearing those words, a smile appeared on Alysanne’s lips. "I’m glad I chose the right husband for my daughter."

Jaehaerys just scoffed but did not deny that he too was satisfied with Alysanne’s choice. Maekar could protect his daughter, even from him, the king. Not to mention from anyone else.
