Chapter 82 - 81 - The Game Is Brutal (I)
At this moment, Maekar and Gael had not even had the chance to have their wedding night when Alysanne barged into their room with a sad expression. The powerful queen’s face was somewhat pale, but her gaze never showed panic.
"What happened?" Putting on his shirt, Maekar sensed something was wrong and asked in a solemn tone. Beside him, Gael also put on a simple nightgown and looked anxiously at her mother.
"About half a day ago, three men broke into Laenor’s room and tried to kill the dragon Seasmoke. The dragon fought back and burned two men to death. Laenor was pushed and hit his head on the corner of the table. His life was saved, but he is in a coma at the moment."
"Damn it, Jaehaerys really is decisive." Maekar remarked in a tone genuinely impressed by Jaehaerys’s coldness and cruelty. Although he too might have chosen to kill the boy and the dragon, he would perhaps have hesitated for a few days before making such a cruel decision.
If Maekar had known Jaehaerys only wanted the boy’s ear and not to kill him, he would probably have felt embarrassed, since, in that case, it was he who was even crueler than Jaehaerys.
"Any movement from Corlys, or rather, any movement from Rhaenys and Meleys?" Maekar asked with a thoughtful look. Corlys himself was not the problem; the problem was a mother riding a giant dragon full of fury.
"Meleys hasn’t moved from her spot; Vermithor and Silverwing are around the dragon at this moment." Alysanne said, still sad. Obviously, whether it was her or Jaehaerys, they had already taken precautions so Rhaenys would not try to invade the castle with the dragon and cause a tragedy.
"Couldn’t it have waited a few more days? My wedding to Gael was today, and they spilled blood." Maekar said in a powerless tone, but there was a touch of pleasure in his eyes. Although it was contemptible, even repugnant, to turn an attempted murder of a child into something profitable, politics was a gray area of humanity.
"But, husband, we spilled blood at our own wedding and even drank it." Gael said in a calm, gentle tone, looking at Maekar with an attentive and tender gaze. She could see Maekar was happy about what had happened and even wished for Laenor’s death.
After all, if Laenor died by Jaehaerys’s orders, there would only be one person the Red Faction could vote for. Maekar himself.
Viserys was supported by Jaehaerys, and, with what had just happened, it was unlikely House Baratheon and Stark would vote for Viserys. In other words, Laenor’s death could make two great noble houses ally with Maekar.
Laenor’s death was almost a divine gift for Maekar and his supporters. She could even imagine when the news spread among Maekar’s supporters, there would be many people celebrating.
However, Maekar could not show himself to be happy about such tragic news, especially in front of Alysanne. After all, Laenor was her great-grandson.
Maekar looked at Gael and, noticing her reproachful look, realized he was showing too much happiness over the possible death of a child and quickly changed his expression, showing a calm, expressionless look.
Gael showed a satisfied look, looked at her mother, and asked in a worried tone. "I assume there will be a meeting."
Alysanne shook her head and answered in a firm tone. "My husband has never been a man to accept that he was wrong, much less now. Jaehaerys will not do that, or rather, he will simply act as if this event never happened."
Maekar was not surprised. Kings were kings, the proudest and most egotistical beings of humanity. Apologize? Try to make amends for one’s own mistake? Sorry, perhaps those words were not in any king’s dictionary. Especially if the guilty party was a great and powerful king.
"It seems things will get out of control," Maekar said in a calm tone. "Rhaenys and Corlys certainly will not let this incident pass without consequences."
"And what could they do?" Gael was not as optimistic as Maekar about Rhaenys and Corlys retaliating. Attacking Jaehaerys was attacking the entire kingdom. If House Velaryon did not want to be erased from Westeros, they only had to stay quiet.
"I never said they would attack physically, but what could make Jaehaerys suffer quite a bit at this moment?" Maekar said in a calm tone, but his lips curved into a smile.
Now, he just needed to wait and see whether Laenor would recover. Honestly, dying was the least of Laenor’s problems. As someone modern, he knew better than anyone how sensitive the human brain was.
The kind of accident Laenor had suffered was, at the very least, a traumatic brain injury. Not to mention the aftereffects of such a wound, it would be surprising if he could even move his body again.
Seeing this, Alysanne let out a tired sigh. She understood the implications in her grandson’s words. Laenor, whether living or dying, was something extremely good for Maekar.
"Maekar, I have to ask you to reinforce the castle’s guards." Alysanne spoke in a heavy tone. Being a mother herself, Alysanne could understand how terrible a mother could become after seeing her child go through something of this magnitude.
Alysanne had gone through a similar feeling when Aemon died. She had only not gone to the battlefield because she was ill at the time; otherwise, she would have done much more than burn pirates and ships. She would have burned the entire City of Myr for letting those pirates exist.
So Alysanne did not doubt at all what Rhaenys might do in this state of rage.
Maekar just nodded his head and spoke. "I will ask Roderick to do that."
Alysanne looked at Maekar and Gael, noticing she was intruding on the couple’s wedding night, and showed an apologetic smile. She gave a kiss on Maekar’s cheek and a kiss on Gael’s cheek, then left with her back slightly more hunched.
"This shook my mother more than I expected." Gael remarked with an uncomfortable touch.
"In the end, he is her great grandson." Maekar said, holding his wife’s hand.
After hesitating for a moment, Gael touched her belly and asked in a worried tone. "Maekar, if we put an egg in our children’s cradle, will he try to kill them too?"
Maekar fell silent, and the smile on his lips disappeared completely. He held Gael’s face with both hands and spoke in a tone that sent chills through the princess.
"Gael, that day will never come."
"Jaehaerys, know that if anything happens to you or to anyone I love, I will burn King’s Landing and every soul in it. I will reduce everything to ashes and bury the entire capital."
Unlike with Rhaenys and Corlys, Jaehaerys truly did not have the nerve to do the same kind of thing to Maekar’s descendants. Because he knew, Maekar was someone who liked conspiracies and rules. You could try to kill him, but if you broke the rules trying to kill Gael or his future children, Maekar would break them too.
No. Maekar would flip the chessboard over and break the entire game.
That was the silent tactical agreement between Maekar and Jaehaerys. They had made no agreement at all, but that agreement needed no handshake, no promise, no paper, since both knew their own personalities.
As they say, only a madman can fight another madman.
Gael felt no fear after learning Maekar would burn so many people; she only felt a sense of safety and knew her choice had not been wrong. A man who cannot protect his own family has failed as a man.
Unlike Corlys, her niece’s husband, he would never even come close to Maekar. This was the man with whom she had chosen to spend her life and carry on his line.
"Let’s go to bed and satisfy my desires, husband." Gael, feeling her blood boil through her body, spoke in a seductive tone tinged with a touch of grace and lust.
A smile appeared on Maekar’s lips; he picked Gael up in his arms and walked toward the bed.
That night was a night of sorrow for some and joy for others.

Note: Have you guys heard of the game Dinoblade? It’s literally like Dark Souls, but instead of a human player, you control a dinosaur with a giant sword in its mouth as it battles other dinosaurs armed with weapons... Definitely interesting.
