Chapter 87: Li Susu
After all, people are never satisfied with the status quo. Once they have a car and a house, they’ll want a better car and a better house—a better life.
Once people can’t earn enough money to satisfy their desires, their lives become filled with conflict.
Arguments and fights become commonplace.
This is especially true for men. If a man can’t make good money after getting married, he’ll constantly be nagged by his wife, which is something young men today absolutely dread.
But it’s different for women. As long as they’re reasonably attractive, they can always find a partner who is well-off.
Of course, some women have high standards and are so picky they can never find their Mr. Right. Once they reach a certain age, they have no choice but to compromise and settle for second best, or else end up alone for the rest of their lives.
Before long, the door to the private room opened. A man walked in, dressed head to toe in a designer suit, his hair slick and shiny.
He was one of Chu Feng’s college classmates, Huang Bin, and he was the one who had organized this reunion.
Chu Feng had heard from other classmates that Huang Bin had made a lot of money in Beihai City.
"Sorry to keep you all waiting. Oh? Hasn’t Li Susu arrived yet?" Huang Bin said with a glance around the room.
"President Huang, you’re such a busy man. You organized the reunion, but then you don’t even show up. That’s not very cool of you," someone remarked.
"Hey, business has been hectic, you know? I was just next door talking business with another company president. I just stopped by to say hi, didn’t I? Remember to message me when Li Susu gets here." After a few perfunctory greetings, Huang Bin left the room.
Everyone could see that the guy didn’t give a damn about any of them. It seemed Li Susu was his only target.
Everyone else was just an accessory.
This left Gao Feng looking thoroughly displeased. That guy was completely out of line.
"Sigh. People these days... once they get rich, they forget everything else."
"If he doesn’t want to talk to us, then forget him. We can talk amongst ourselves. I heard you’ve started your own business now, Gao Feng. Set up a factory, bought a car... you’re doing pretty well for yourself," a female classmate said, looking at him in a new light.
It was obvious she was interested in Gao Feng.
"Nah, I’m just messing around, dabbling in a few things. You can’t even call it a factory. There are only eight or nine of us in total," Gao Feng said.
"That’s still better than most people! You’re not getting any younger, so why haven’t you thought about getting married?" the female classmate pressed, deliberately leaning in closer.
Her intentions couldn’t be more obvious. Everyone could see she was into Gao Feng.
"What’s there to consider? I can barely take care of myself right now. Where would I find the energy to get married?" Gao Feng said, deliberately deflecting.
He wasn’t an idiot; he could tell the female classmate was interested in him.
However, he’d heard things about her before. She was a total gold-digger. Rumor had it she’d done some shady things to make money, and gossip about it had already made the rounds among their old classmates. That’s why Gao Feng wanted nothing to do with her.
At this point, another classmate turned to Chu Feng.
"Chu Feng, where’s your wife from? Is she from back home? Really, you should’ve brought her so we could all meet her. We’re all old classmates who haven’t seen each other in ages. Besides, it’s obvious Huang Bin is just using this reunion as an excuse to get closer to Li Susu. He couldn’t care less about us, so it would’ve been nice to have your wife join us for dinner."
Everyone had already seen right through Huang Bin’s little scheme. It’s true what they say: only the most profit-driven people can make real money.
"My wife is from Beihai City," Chu Feng said. "This is a reunion for us old classmates. It wouldn’t be right to call her over."
"Wow, Chu Feng, you’re something else! You actually married a rich local woman?" several classmates exclaimed in surprise.
"Just a coincidence. I guess I just have dumb luck," Chu Feng said with a smile.
"I hear the rich local women here are loaded. They own several buildings and all that. Does that mean you spend your days just waking up and collecting rent?" someone asked curiously.
"Not quite. When I wake up, I go watch the main gate. I’m a security guard," Chu Feng said, making no attempt to hide his profession.
In Chu Feng’s eyes, there was nothing to be ashamed of.
Being a security guard wasn’t a disgraceful job; he was earning a living with his own two hands.
"No way. You’re actually a security guard? How much can you possibly make a month doing that? It’s probably not even enough to support yourself." Hearing this, the faces of those few female classmates, which had been full of interest, instantly fell. They made a few dismissive comments and then stopped talking to him.
Chu Feng was unfazed by this. He couldn’t care less.
He had only come to this reunion for Gao Feng’s sake. If his friend hadn’t asked him to come, Chu Feng wouldn’t have bothered showing up.
He had never been particularly close with anyone else back in college.
"What’s wrong with being a security guard? Is it supposed to be shameful?" Gao Feng said, a little angry when he saw the female classmates ignoring Chu Feng.
Then he turned to Chu Feng. "Feng, why don’t you come work with me? As long as I’ve got food on my plate, I’ll make sure you do too."
Chu Feng smiled. "Feng, I appreciate the offer, really. But I’m pretty comfortable as a security guard right now. If I ever feel like quitting, I’ll come find you. There’s no need to be so formal between us, right?"
"Alright, you said it. Just don’t complain that my operation is too small for you," Gao Feng replied.
After waiting a while longer, Gao Feng glanced at his phone, looking a bit anxious.
"Why isn’t Li Susu here yet? She has no respect for anyone’s time. I have to get back to work later," Gao Feng grumbled.
"We’ve already waited this long, what’s a little longer? If she’s still not here soon, we can just go grab a drink somewhere else by ourselves," Chu Feng said.
"Deal. If I’d known it was going to be like this, I wouldn’t have come. We could have just gotten a drink, just the two of us," Gao Feng said, clearly irritated.
The reunion was supposed to start at eight, but it was already almost nine, and she still hadn’t shown up.
Soon, it was ten past nine, and everyone was getting impatient.
It wasn’t about the free meal; everyone just wanted a chance for old classmates to get together and catch up.
At this point, Gao Feng couldn’t sit still any longer. "Forget this, I’m not waiting anymore," he said abruptly. "Let’s go get a drink somewhere else."
"Sounds good," Chu Feng said with a nod. He didn’t want to sit around waiting either; it was a complete waste of time.
The two of them got up, and just as they were about to head out, the door to the room swung open.
A fashionable young woman stood at the entrance. Beside her, Huang Bin was smiling and chatting incessantly.
Behind the young woman were three or four other girls. Chu Feng glanced at them and found them familiar, recognizing them as former classmates.
"Huang Bin," one of the girls said with a smile, "we may be old classmates, but if you want Susu to help you out, you’re going to have to drink a little more later, won’t you? To show your sincerity."
