Chapter 178: First Contact with the Invaders from Another Dimension
Liam remained motionless in front of the screen.
Pix’s latest message was still floating before his eyes.
[Pix: And it didn’t come alone.]
’How many are there?’
The response took a few seconds.
[Pix: I can’t determine the exact number.]
Liam clenched his teeth.
’Then tell me what you can.’
[Pix: The creature Jordan and the others are facing isn’t a normal dungeon creature.]
[Pix: It’s a being that belongs to another dimension.]
Liam looked at Armstrong.
"What’s happening?" the captain asked.
Liam hesitated.
"The pixie from my system believes that creature belongs to another dimension."
Armstrong frowned.
"And what does that mean?"
"It probably means we’re not dealing with an invasion of simple monsters."
Liam looked back at the screen.
"We’re dealing with visitors."
Armstrong remained silent.
The difference seemed small, but it wasn’t.
If that creature really belonged to another dimension, then it had an intelligence and origin completely different from those of dungeon monsters.
And that meant there could be more.
Many more.
"Can you ask that pixie anything else?" Armstrong asked.
"I’ll try."
Liam closed his eyes.
’Pix, why are they here?’
[Pix: I don’t know.]
’Do they want to invade us?’
[Pix: I don’t know.]
Liam opened his eyes.
"She always gives me the same answer."
Armstrong looked at him.
"Because she probably doesn’t know either."
Liam nodded.
"But there is something we do know."
"What?"
Liam pointed at the screen.
"They can cross between dungeons."
Armstrong immediately understood.
"Then we have to stop them from coming through."
"Exactly."
A technician interrupted them.
"Sub-Captain Davis!"
Liam turned around.
"What happened?"
"We’ve restored communication with the team!"
Liam quickly approached.
The screen once again displayed images.
The forest was covered in smoke, and several trees had been destroyed.
Jordan was standing in front of a massive creature.
Carol and Emily were behind him.
Chuck was holding several weapons.
Lena had her black sword ready.
Zayn and Nora were standing to one side.
Ray was protecting the three unconscious hunters.
Chloe remained near the group.
"Jordan!" Liam shouted.
The hunter’s voice came through the communicator.
"Boss!"
"How are you guys?"
"Everyone’s alive!"
Liam let out a sigh of relief.
"And the creature?"
Jordan looked ahead.
"It’s still standing in front of us."
The camera stabilized.
For the first time, Liam could see it clearly.
It was a massive creature, standing more than three meters tall.
Its body appeared to be covered in dark armor.
It had four arms.
Two of them held weapons that looked like swords made of violet energy.
Its eyes glowed an intense red.
But what caught Liam’s attention the most was its face.
It didn’t look like a beast.
It had distinctly humanoid features.
"It doesn’t look like a normal monster," Armstrong said.
"It isn’t," Liam replied.
The creature took a step forward.
Jordan raised his fists.
"I don’t know if it can understand us!"
The creature raised one of its weapons.
"I can understand you."
Everyone froze.
Chuck slowly lowered one of his hands.
"Oh."
Lena blinked.
"It talks."
Jordan looked at the others.
"That makes things easier."
The creature observed the hunters.
"We don’t want to fight."
Carol narrowed her eyes.
"Then lower your weapons."
The creature remained still.
"You attacked first."
Chuck raised an eyebrow.
"Technically, that’s true."
Emily looked at him.
"Chuck!"
"What? It’s true."
The creature lowered its weapons slightly.
"We did not come to conquer your world."
Liam watched everything through the screen.
’Then what are they looking for?’
The question seemed obvious.
But before he could ask it, the creature spoke.
"We seek refuge."
The group fell silent.
Jordan slowly lowered his fists.
"Refuge?"
The creature nodded.
"Our world is dying."
◇◆◇
Liam felt the room fall silent.
"What did it say?" Armstrong asked.
Liam repeated the creature’s words.
"It seems their world is dying."
Armstrong stared at the screen.
"Then the dungeons..."
"Could be their escape routes."
Liam remembered everything.
The dungeons appearing.
The alterations.
The dimensional connections.
The energy accumulating.
The rift.
Everything was beginning to make sense.
’They’re not trying to invade our world.’
’They’re simply trying to reach it.’
But there was something he didn’t understand.
"Why now?"
A message from Pix appeared before his eyes.
[Pix: Because the dimensional connections are becoming stronger.]
’Because of the dungeon energy?’
[Pix: Yes.]
’Then the dungeons are acting as bridges.’
[Pix: Exactly.]
Liam looked at the screen again.
The creature was talking to Jordan.
"Why is your world dying?" Jordan asked.
The creature lowered its head.
"The energy of our dimension is disappearing."
Nora took a step forward.
"Energy?"
"Everything needs energy to exist."
The creature looked toward the sky.
"Our world began losing it a long time ago."
"And that’s why you came here?" Emily asked.
"Yes."
Carol crossed her arms.
"How many of you are there?"
The creature remained silent.
Finally, it answered:
"Many."
Liam felt a shiver.
’That’s not good.’
Armstrong seemed to be thinking the same thing.
"Ask them if there are more connections," he said.
Liam relayed the question through the communicator.
Jordan asked:
"Are there more portals?"
The creature answered:
"Yes."
Liam’s eyes widened.
"How many?"
The creature looked toward the sky.
"Enough."
The communicator filled with interference again.
Then a noise could be heard.
A roar.
But it wasn’t coming from the creature standing in front of them.
It was coming from far away.
The creature raised its head.
For the first time, its expression changed.
It looked worried.
"They’ve begun."
Jordan frowned.
"What’s begun?"
The creature answered:
"The other doors."
◇◆◇
In the control room, several alarms began sounding at the same time.
"Sub-Captain!"
Liam turned around.
"What happened?"
The technician was pale.
"We’re detecting other dimensional alterations!"
"Where?"
The map appeared on the screen.
One point.
Two.
Five.
Ten.
Liam felt his heart stop.
"How many?"
"We can’t count them!"
New points appeared on the map.
Some were near cities.
Others were in rural areas.
Others were in the middle of oceans.
Armstrong approached the map.
"This is happening all over the world."
Liam watched the signals.
’The dungeons...’
Every dungeon that had evolved was reacting.
And dimensional rifts were beginning to appear around the planet.
"Can we close the doors?" Armstrong asked.
The technician shook his head.
"We don’t know how."
Liam looked at Pix.
’Can you do anything?’
Pix slowly shook her head.
[Pix: No, I’m sorry.]
Liam felt a weight in his chest.
[Pix: Liam, this no longer depends on a single dungeon.]
[Pix: The dimensions are beginning to connect to one another.]
Liam clenched his fists.
"Then we have to find the source."
Armstrong heard him.
"The source?"
"Yes."
Liam pointed at the map.
"If all these dungeons are connected, there must be a central point."
Armstrong studied the data.
"And if we find that point?"
Liam looked at the system chat, waiting for an answer.
The little pixie remained silent for several long seconds.
But then a message appeared.
[Pix: If you destroy the connection point...]
[Pix: You might be able to cut off all the connections.]
Liam took a deep breath.
"Then that’s our priority."
Armstrong nodded.
"I’m going to contact the other sub-captains."
"And I’ll gather my squad."
"Liam."
Liam stopped.
"Yes?"
Armstrong looked at him seriously.
"We don’t know what we’ll find."
Liam smiled.
"We never do, sir."
Armstrong let out a small laugh.
"I suppose you’re right."
◇◆◇
Liam ran out of the control room.
He took out his phone and called Lydia.
The call connected quickly.
"Liam?"
"Lydia, are you okay?"
"Yes. What’s happening?"
Liam remained silent for a few seconds.
"I want you to stay home."
Lydia immediately understood.
"Is this about the whole dungeon situation?"
"Yes."
"Is something happening?"
"Something big. And I need you to stay safe, darling."
Lydia fell silent.
"Liam..."
"Promise me."
She sighed.
"Okay."
"Thank you."
"But you have to promise me something too."
"What?"
"That you’ll come back."
Liam smiled.
"I always come back to you, darling."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
The call ended.
Liam remained still for a few seconds, staring at his phone.
Then he raised his head.
’I have to get back to her.’
◇◆◇
The squad gathered in the parking lot.
Jordan arrived first.
"What do we do?"
Liam looked at everyone.
"We have a new mission."
Chuck smiled.
"I knew tonight was going to get interesting."
Carol shook her head.
"I don’t know if ’interesting’ is the word I’d use."
Liam pointed toward the sky.
In the distance, a faint violet light could be seen.
"The dungeons are opening connections to other dimensions."
Everyone fell silent.
"Other dimensions?" Lena asked.
"Yes."
Nora looked at her shadow creatures.
"And what do they want?"
Liam looked toward the sky.
"Some of them are looking for refuge."
"Some?"
Emily asked.
Liam nodded.
"But we don’t know what the others want."
Ray clenched his fists.
"Then we need to be prepared."
Chloe stepped forward.
"What’s our objective?"
Liam looked at all of them.
"Find the source of the connections."
Zayn smiled.
"So, are we going into a dungeon?"
Liam shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward the sky.
"We’re going to look for a door."
Jordan swallowed.
"And what’s behind it?"
Liam thought about the creature’s words.
’Our world is dying.’
Then he remembered Pix’s message.
’And it didn’t come alone.’
"That’s exactly what we’re going to find out."
At that moment, the sky above the city lit up.
A massive violet rift appeared among the clouds.
Everyone looked up.
And a second silhouette began to emerge through it.
