Chapter 169: Sub-Captains’ Meeting in Captain Armstrong’s Office [1]
Liam walked down the stairs from the rooftop as the first drops of rain began to fall on the building.
The sound of rain against the windows became increasingly noticeable as he made his way down the hallway toward his apartment.
He carefully opened the door.
Everything was quiet.
Liam looked toward the couch.
Empty.
Then he looked at the kitchen.
Also empty.
Finally, he turned his gaze toward the bedroom.
’I guess she’s still sleeping.’
He walked to the bedroom and slowly opened the door.
Lydia was completely wrapped up in the sheets.
Her hair was messy, and her face was barely visible beneath the blankets.
Liam smiled.
He walked over to the bed and sat beside her.
"Darling..."
There was no response.
"Lydia, we have to go to headquarters."
She moved slightly.
"Five more minutes..."
Liam let out a small laugh.
"It’s raining."
"Then five more minutes."
"If you keep sleeping, it’ll already be nighttime when you wake up."
Lydia opened one eye.
"Really?"
"No."
She closed her eye again.
Liam shook his head.
"Good morning, future mother."
Lydia’s eyes immediately opened.
"Future mother?"
Liam smiled.
"Good morning."
Lydia quickly sat up and hugged him.
"Good morning, future father!"
Liam was trapped in her arms.
"I see someone is in a good mood."
"How could I not be?"
Lydia rested her head against his chest.
"I still can’t believe I’m going to be a mom."
Liam gently stroked her hair.
"Me neither."
For a few seconds, they remained wrapped in each other’s arms.
Liam felt a small pressure in his chest.
He remembered Pix’s words.
’She could accidentally consume the baby.’
His smile disappeared for a moment.
But Lydia raised her head and looked at him.
"Are you okay?"
Liam smiled again.
"Yeah."
"You looked worried."
"I was just thinking about everything we have to do."
Lydia smiled.
"Then we’ll have to make a list."
"A list?"
"Of course."
Lydia began counting on her fingers.
"We have to prepare the baby’s room."
"It’s a little early."
"We also have to buy clothes."
"That one, yes."
"And a crib."
"Yeah."
"And toys."
"Lydia..."
"And we have to decide what we’re going to name the baby."
Liam looked at her.
"You’re already thinking about names?"
"Since last night."
Liam burst out laughing.
"How many do you have?"
"Too many."
Lydia got out of bed.
"Let’s have breakfast."
"Don’t you want to sleep a little longer?"
"No."
Lydia walked toward the door.
"Now I have too many things to think about."
Liam smiled and followed her.
◇◆◇
After breakfast, they both got ready to leave.
The rain had increased considerably.
Lydia looked out the window as she put on her coat.
"I hope we don’t have a dangerous mission today."
Liam raised an eyebrow.
"You don’t want to work?"
"I do."
Lydia walked closer to him.
"But today I want to take it easy."
Liam understood perfectly.
"We can do that."
They both left the apartment and went down to the parking lot.
The building was practically empty.
Liam opened the door of his SUV, and Lydia got into the passenger seat.
When they started driving, the rain pounded against the windshield.
During the drive, Lydia placed a hand over her abdomen.
There was still no visible change.
But for her, that was enough.
Liam glanced at her.
"What are you doing?"
"I’m saying hello to our baby."
Liam smiled.
"Do you think they can hear you?"
"I don’t know."
Lydia looked out the window again.
"But I want to do it."
Liam didn’t respond.
He simply reached over and took her hand.
◇◆◇
When they arrived at the guild headquarters, there was much more activity than usual.
Hunters were entering and leaving the building.
Several vehicles were parked in front of the entrance.
Liam frowned.
"Something’s going on."
Lydia nodded.
"Definitely."
As soon as they entered, Liam was immediately greeted by one of the employees.
"Sub-Captain Davis."
"Yes?"
"Captain Armstrong asked that you and Lydia go directly to his office when you arrive."
Liam exchanged a glance with his wife.
"Did he say why?"
"No."
"Understood."
Liam and Lydia began walking.
Before they reached Armstrong’s office, they heard a familiar voice.
"Boss!"
Zayn came running down the hallway.
He stopped in front of Liam after covering several meters in barely an instant.
"Good morning."
Liam looked at him.
"Are you trying to knock someone over?"
"What?"
"You just ran down a hallway full of people."
Zayn looked behind him.
"Oh..."
Several people were staring at him angrily.
"Sorry."
Liam sighed.
"Control your speed."
"Yes, Boss."
Lydia smiled.
"Good morning, Zayn."
"Good morning, Boss Lady."
Liam opened the door to Armstrong’s office.
Several of the sub-captains were already inside.
Armstrong was standing behind his desk.
"Finally."
Liam entered alongside Lydia.
"Sir... What’s going on?"
Armstrong crossed his arms.
"We have a problem."
The captain’s tone made any trace of humor disappear.
Liam looked around.
"Another dungeon?"
"You could say that..."
Armstrong pointed to a screen behind him.
A map of the world was displayed on it.
Several points were marked.
Too many.
Liam frowned.
"What’s that?"
"Requests for assistance."
Armstrong pointed to one of the points.
"Japan."
Then another.
"France."
Another.
"Argentina."
He continued pointing to different regions.
"From every continent..."
Liam remained silent.
"What’s happening?"
Armstrong took a breath.
"Guilds from other countries are reporting the same phenomenon you encountered."
The room fell silent.
"S-Rank dungeons are changing."
Liam’s expression hardened.
"Changing how?"
"Alterations inside. Temporal alterations. Changes in the creatures."
Armstrong paused.
"And then..."
The screen changed.
An image of a massive dungeon appeared.
"Some of them evolved."
Liam immediately remembered Pix’s words.
’The dungeon evolved.’
Armstrong continued.
"We now have multiple SS-Rank dungeons appearing around the planet."
Lydia looked at Liam.
He remained completely still.
"How many?"
"More than we can handle with our own squads alone."
Armstrong lowered his gaze.
"That’s why they’re asking for our help."
One of the sub-captains spoke.
"They want us to send hunters overseas?"
"Yes."
"And what about our own dungeons?"
"That’s precisely the problem."
Armstrong changed the screen again.
Now several reports appeared.
"Because some of our SS-Rank dungeons are showing that strange energy again."
Liam felt a shiver.
"The same energy we saw."
Armstrong nodded.
"Exactly."
Lydia remained silent.
Liam clenched his fists.
’So this really isn’t over...’
Over the past few days, he had thought the dungeon they encountered was an isolated case.
Now it was clear that it wasn’t.
This was happening all over the planet.
And if James was right...
Something much bigger could be beginning.
Armstrong looked at everyone present.
"That’s why I’ve gathered you here."
Absolute silence filled the room.
"We need to decide how we’re going to handle this situation."
Liam looked at the map again.
Dozens of points were glowing across different parts of the world.
This wasn’t just about protecting their city anymore.
Now there was a problem that could affect the entire planet.
