My Slime Wife: Training and Pampering Her Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 168: A Call with James

The morning had begun peacefully.

The sky was still clear over the city, although some clouds were slowly beginning to gather on the horizon.

Liam was on the rooftop of the building he had bought a few months ago. The place had become one of his favorite spots to think, especially during the early hours of the day, when everything was much quieter.

He held a cup of black coffee in his hands as he stared at the buildings in the distance.

He hadn't slept much.

Not because Lydia had caused any trouble during the night.

Quite the opposite.

His wife had slept soundly after their celebratory dinner, completely happy about the news of her pregnancy.

Liam, on the other hand, had spent much of the night thinking about Pix's words.

'Lydia could accidentally consume her child...'

Every time he remembered that possibility, he felt a shiver run down his spine.

That was why he had decided to talk to James as soon as possible.

He took his phone out of his pocket and made a call.

After a few seconds, someone answered.

"Liam?"

"Good morning, James."

"Good morning. Did something happen?"

Liam remained silent for a few seconds.

He wasn't exactly sure how to begin.

"I wanted to talk to you about Lydia."

James fell silent on the other end.

"About her pregnancy?"

"Yes."

Liam took a sip of coffee before continuing.

"According to the pixie from my Awakening System, it's dangerous for Lydia to be pregnant while being a slime."

James took a few seconds to respond.

"You're going to have to be a little more specific."

Liam lowered his gaze toward his cup.

"What exactly do you mean when you say it's dangerous?"

Liam swallowed.

He knew there was no other way to explain it.

"No matter how much she is my wife, Lydia is still a slime."

James said nothing.

"And as a slime, she has the ability to consume anything that's inside her body."

Liam's voice became more serious.

"So..."

James immediately understood where the conversation was going.

"Taking that into consideration, Lydia could accidentally consume the baby growing inside her body."

Liam closed his eyes.

"You hit the nail on the head."

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

The sound of the wind passed across the rooftop as Liam watched the clouds slowly cover the sky.

Finally, James sighed.

"I understand the situation."

His tone had completely changed.

He no longer sounded like the excited scientist who had discovered a unique case.

He sounded like a doctor who had just understood the seriousness of the problem.

"And I understand why you're worried."

"I want you to investigate her pregnancy."

Liam tightened his grip slightly around the cup.

"Since Lydia has allowed you to study her condition, I want you to take advantage of that opportunity and find a way for her to control her powers. I don't want to wait until something happens."

"I will. Don't worry."

James's response was immediate.

"I'll do everything I can to find a solution before this becomes something serious."

Liam slowly released the breath he had been holding.

"Thank you."

"And, of course..."

James paused briefly.

"Congratulations again."

Liam smiled faintly.

"Thank you."

"You're expecting a baby. It's still wonderful news, even with all these complications."

"I know."

Liam looked up at the sky.

"That's why I want to protect both of them."

"And I appreciate you allowing me to study your slime wife."

Liam let out a small laugh.

"I just ask that you take care of her."

"You can count on me."

"And there's one more thing."

"What?"

"Don't tell her anything about this."

James immediately understood.

"You mean what we just talked about?"

"Yes."

Liam took another sip of coffee.

"I don't want Lydia to worry. She's happy. Far too happy for me to burden her with something like this right now."

James remained silent for a few seconds.

"I understand."

His voice was calm.

"I won't tell her anything. I don't want to upset her in her current state."

Liam nodded even though James couldn't see him.

"Thank you."

A gust of wind swept across the rooftop.

Liam looked up.

The clouds had spread much faster than he expected.

It looked like it was going to rain.

"By the way, Liam..."

"Yes?"

James slightly changed the subject.

"The rest of the squads have already returned from the other dungeons."

Liam raised an eyebrow.

"They're already back?"

"Yes. I have all the reports in my office."

James paused briefly.

"And from what I've been reading, you're not the only one who experienced an alteration inside a dungeon severe enough for it to evolve."

Liam froze.

"What?"

"You're not the only one who experienced a temporal alteration either."

Liam stopped looking at the sky and focused all his attention on the call.

"What happened to the others?"

"According to Sub-Captain Amber's report, she and her squad were trapped for approximately two years inside a snowy mountain."

Liam almost dropped his cup.

"Two years?"

"That's what the report says."

James continued.

"The strange thing is that, in our dimension, no more than five hours had passed."

Liam's eyes widened.

Two years.

Five hours.

The difference was even greater than what his squad had experienced.

'So we really weren't the only ones...'

"James, do you have any theories?"

"A few."

Liam waited.

"It's always been said that dungeons were portals to other dimensions."

James paused briefly.

"For a long time, it was nothing more than a theory, but over the past year, it was finally confirmed."

Liam slowly nodded.

"We already knew that."

"Exactly."

James took a deep breath.

"What we still don't understand is how this new phenomenon of dungeon evolution works."

"Do you think it's related to the dimensions?"

"It's possible."

James sounded thoughtful.

"But we still don't have enough information."

Liam remained silent.

Then James asked an unexpected question.

"Liam, can I ask you a favor?"

"Depends."

"Could you ask that pixie if she can share information with me about the multiple dimensions and dungeons?"

Liam frowned.

Pix didn't usually share information easily.

In fact, there were times when she seemed to particularly enjoy keeping him confused.

'I don't think she's going to be very cooperative...'

However, James was going to be responsible for studying Lydia's pregnancy.

Besides, he had promised to keep the danger surrounding her pregnancy a secret while her powers remained unstable.

It was the least he could do.

"I'll do what I can."

James remained silent.

"I can't promise the pixie will be very cooperative."

James let out a small laugh.

"Any information I can get will be useful for my research."

Liam smiled.

"Then I'll ask her."

"Thank you, Liam."

"No problem."

Liam looked toward the sky again.

The clouds had already covered much of the city.

"See you later at headquarters."

"Sure."

"Take care, James."

"You too."

They said their goodbyes, and the call ended.

Liam slowly lowered his phone and put it back in his pocket.

For a few seconds, he remained still.

He looked at the cup he was still holding.

The black coffee left inside was already almost cold.

Liam finished it in one gulp.

"Ugh..."

He grimaced.

It was definitely cold.

However, he didn't have time to make another cup.

He put the cup away and walked toward the door leading to the stairs.

Before going inside, he looked at the sky one more time.

A small rumble of thunder sounded in the distance.

"I'd better wake Lydia up before she notices I'm not in bed."

Besides, he had to ask Pix about the dimensions.

And knowing her, he'd probably have to put up with a few complaints before getting an answer.

Liam smiled faintly as he began walking down the stairs.

"It's going to be a long day."

Behind him, the first drops of rain began to fall onto the rooftop.
