Chapter 185: Energy Slime
Lydia’s small copy remained motionless before Liam’s eyes.
The violet lines running across her small body were still glowing.
Liam could feel that she was still alive.
She was simply completely exhausted.
But then...
A violet light began to envelop her.
Liam’s eyes widened.
"What’s happening?"
Pix immediately appeared beside him.
"Liam!"
The light grew more intense.
The small copy slowly began to rise from his hands.
"Wait!"
Liam tried to hold onto her, but Pix shook her head.
"Don’t touch her."
"Why?"
"She’s evolving."
Liam froze.
He stared intently at the small mass of slime.
’Is Lydia’s copy evolving...?’
It wasn’t the copy.
The copy was simply an extension of his wife.
The evolution was happening to Lydia.
Somewhere far away, Lydia’s main body must have been experiencing the same change.
The violet light completely enveloped the copy.
Then a message appeared before Liam’s eyes.
[Lydia Davis — Energy Slime Level 70]
Liam felt a shiver as he read his wife’s new title.
"Energy Slime..."
Pix smiled.
"She did it."
The small copy began to change.
Her slime body became slightly more transparent.
The violet lines slowly disappeared from within her, replaced by tiny sparks of energy moving throughout her body.
She didn’t look any bigger.
She didn’t look any stronger.
But she was definitely different.
The copy floated in front of Liam and opened two tiny new eyes.
"Lydia?"
The copy tilted her head.
[Lydia: Liam...]
Liam smiled.
"I’m here."
[Lydia: Something changed inside me.]
"Yes, sweetheart."
Liam reached out a hand.
The small copy leaned against it.
"You just evolved."
[Lydia: Did I reach Level 70?]
"Yes."
The copy seemed surprised.
[Lydia: But I was still far from evolving.]
Pix let out a small laugh.
The copy looked at her.
Pix pointed at Liam.
"It’s Lydia who evolved. You’re just a part of her."
Liam nodded.
"It’s like you’re experiencing her evolution from here."
The small copy seemed to understand.
Then a small violet spark appeared above her body.
Pix moved closer.
"I think we should check what she can do now."
"Now?"
Liam looked around.
The place was completely destroyed.
The creature had disappeared.
The transparent plants were fading.
The glowing rocks had lost almost all of their energy.
And the enormous circular structure that had connected this dimension to the dungeon was beginning to shake.
Pix’s eyes widened.
"Well..."
"What?"
"I think we’ll have to save the testing for later."
A loud rumble shook the area.
Everyone looked up.
One of the enormous floating mountains began to break apart.
Chunks of rock fell from the sky.
Lena looked up.
"That doesn’t look good..."
Ray shook his head.
"I don’t think so."
Another rumble.
The circular structure began to crumble.
Pix stared at the remnants of dimensional energy.
"The connection is closing."
Liam immediately understood.
"What happens to this dimension?"
Pix swallowed.
"It’s disappearing."
Jordan took a deep breath.
"Disappearing?"
"Yes."
Pix pointed toward the sky.
The enormous white sphere illuminating the dimension was losing its glow.
"This dimension was connected to the dungeon through that structure. Now that the connection has been destroyed, this place is losing its stability."
Chloe slowly got back to her feet.
"Then we need to leave as soon as possible."
"Exactly."
Liam looked toward the direction they had come from.
"Where’s the portal?"
Pix pointed into the distance.
"It should be in the direction we came from."
Zayn let out a tired laugh.
"Should be?"
Pix looked at him.
"I don’t have better news."
"Great."
Zayn dropped to one knee.
"Because I feel like my legs are about to stop working."
Liam looked at the others.
None of them were in good condition.
Jordan was breathing heavily and had significantly less body fat.
Nora had lost almost all of her shadows.
Ray could barely remain standing, his legs trembling.
Lena’s uniform was covered in dust.
Chuck had lost several of his weapons and was picking them up.
Chloe was exhausted after maintaining all the connections.
Emily and Carol hadn’t even gotten back to their feet.
Liam looked at them.
"Emily, Carol."
Both of them looked up.
"Can you walk?"
Emily grimaced.
"Yeah, Boss."
Carol slowly stood up.
"But don’t expect me to run."
"We just need to reach the portal."
Liam looked at everyone.
"Let’s go."
◇◆◇
The group began moving.
Each step felt heavier than the last, and the ground constantly trembled beneath them.
Large cracks appeared beneath their feet.
Zayn tried to move quickly, but his body wasn’t responding like it had before.
Chloe walked beside him.
"Are you okay?"
"Perfectly fine."
Zayn stumbled.
Chloe caught him before he fell.
"Sure."
"I’m fine..."
"Obviously..."
Jordan let out a small laugh.
But even he was exhausted.
Liam walked ahead while carrying Lydia’s small copy in his hands.
The copy remained calm.
However, Liam could feel something different.
A small amount of energy was constantly moving inside her.
It wasn’t the energy she had absorbed from the creature.
It was something new.
Pix floated beside him.
"Liam."
"Yeah?"
"I think I understand one of Energy Slime’s abilities now."
"Which one?"
"The energy Lydia absorbed isn’t disappearing."
"Is it being stored?"
"Exactly. It’s similar to [Storage Slime]."
Pix pointed at the copy.
"But what’s more interesting is that she doesn’t seem to use the energy from a source until it’s completely depleted."
Liam frowned.
"Then?"
"It’s as if she’s borrowing it."
Liam became thoughtful.
Pix continued.
"She can extract energy from a source, store it temporarily, and use it later. But she doesn’t need to destroy the source."
"Like the creature."
"Not exactly."
Pix shook her head.
"That creature stole energy."
She looked at the small copy.
"Lydia can borrow it."
Liam understood the difference.
The creature needed to consume the energy around it to sustain itself.
Lydia didn’t.
She could use some of the available energy and return it afterward.
"That means she could take energy from one of us without weakening us."
"Exactly."
Liam looked at the small copy.
’So that’s the real change...’
Until now, Lydia gained things by consuming them.
But now she could obtain energy without destroying the source it came from.
It was an entirely different kind of evolution.
"We have to tell James about this."
Pix nodded and smiled.
A loud rumble interrupted their conversation.
Everyone stopped.
In the distance, a floating mountain began to fall.
The impact sent an enormous cloud of dust into the air.
Lena coughed.
"How much farther?"
Pix looked ahead.
"I think..."
Another tremor shook the ground, and it began to split apart.
"Run!"
Everyone started moving.
Jordan helped Emily.
Carol grabbed Lena by the arm.
Chloe connected her energy with Zayn and Ray to help them keep moving.
Nora used one final shadow to scout the path ahead.
Chuck threw a knife at a rock blocking the way.
The knife exploded, and the rock shattered.
"This way!"
Liam ran.
Lydia’s copy floated above his hands.
Ahead...
A small light began to appear.
Liam’s eyes widened.
"The portal!"
Everyone sped up.
But then...
The ground behind them began to disappear.
A massive crack spread toward the group.
The light of the portal remained ahead.
But it seemed farther and farther away.
Liam gritted his teeth.
"Don’t stop!"
The portal began flickering.
Pix went pale.
"Liam..."
"What?"
"It’s closing!"
Liam looked ahead.
Everyone was exhausted.
The dimension was collapsing.
And the only way back was disappearing right before their eyes.
