Chapter 184: Stealing Energy from the Energy Thief
The creature remained motionless for several seconds.
Its enormous violet eyes remained fixed on Lydia’s small copy.
"Two lives..." it repeated.
Liam felt a shiver run through his body.
"Stay away from her!"
The creature raised one of its enormous arms.
The air in that dimension began to vibrate.
Liam gritted his teeth.
Emily and Carol could barely remain standing after using that combination twice. Both were breathing heavily, and their bodies were covered in dust.
"Emily, Carol, stay back," Liam ordered.
"But..."
"No."
Liam left no room for argument.
"You’ve already done enough."
Carol looked at her arm, still covered in remnants of crystalline material.
"I guess the boss is right."
Emily let out a sigh.
"Yeah... I don’t think I can do that again."
Liam nodded.
He wasn’t going to put them at risk.
But the creature was still there.
And although they had managed to partially separate it from the dimensional structure, it still possessed an enormous amount of energy.
Jordan stepped forward.
"Then it’s our turn."
The massive hunter thumped his chest.
"Come on, big guy!"
The creature roared, and Jordan took the impact head-on.
The ground beneath his feet cracked as his body absorbed the force of the blow.
"Ugh!"
He was pushed back several yards, but he didn’t fall.
"Still strong!"
"Zayn!" Liam shouted.
Zayn disappeared from his position.
The speedster ran around the creature, constantly changing direction.
The monster tried to follow him with its eyes, but Zayn was too fast.
"Over here, buddy!"
Zayn appeared behind it.
"And over here!"
He appeared at its side again.
The creature began spinning around desperately.
"Now!" Zayn shouted.
Nora raised a hand, and several small shadow creatures appeared around the enemy.
This time, however, their bodies trembled.
The dimension was still interfering with them.
"I can’t keep them out for long..."
"We only need a few seconds," Liam replied.
The shadows lunged at the creature’s legs.
They didn’t try to hurt it.
Instead, they clung to its limbs.
One of them managed to climb onto its back.
Another wrapped itself around its arm.
The creature roared and began shaking itself violently.
"Jordan!"
"Coming!"
Jordan charged toward it.
He burned energy from his body fat just before impact.
The blow sent the creature stumbling backward.
"Ray!"
Ray was already waiting.
He placed one hand on the ground.
"Let’s see if this works."
He altered the density of a massive nearby rock.
The stone became extremely heavy.
Ray grinned.
"Now!"
He threw it.
Jordan caught it with both arms.
"What?!"
Ray had reduced its density again.
The massive rock became light.
Jordan hurled it with all his strength.
The stone tore through the air and struck the creature in the face.
It didn’t cause any serious injury, but it managed to knock the creature backward.
"It worked!" Jordan shouted.
"Not for long," Ray replied.
The creature began regaining its balance.
Liam watched carefully.
Something had changed.
Every time the creature was attacked, it absorbed energy from the environment to recover.
But it could no longer absorb energy directly from the structure.
Now it had to get close to the glowing plants and rocks.
That meant they had a chance.
"Chloe!"
"Yeah!"
Chloe ran toward Jordan, placed a hand on his back, and an energy connection was established between them.
Jordan felt some of his exhaustion disappear.
"That feels good."
"Don’t get used to it..."
Chloe replied.
"I don’t have infinite energy."
Liam watched Chloe.
Then he looked at Zayn.
"Chloe, connect with Zayn too."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Chloe extended a hand.
Zayn ran past her and touched her for an instant.
The connection was established.
Zayn started running again.
This time, his speed increased.
Not because Chloe had given him strength.
She was simply redistributing her own energy to him.
Zayn ran much faster.
The creature tried to follow him again.
But this time, Zayn wasn’t trying to attack it.
He was leading it.
"Come with me!"
The creature followed him.
Zayn ran past one of the transparent plants that released energy.
The creature extended its arm toward it.
"Now!"
Nora understood.
Her remaining shadows lunged at the creature’s arm.
They made it miss.
The monster roared and slammed the ground.
Zayn took advantage of the moment to change direction.
"Ray!"
Ray touched a section of rock and made it extremely light.
Zayn ran past it.
"Chuck!"
Chuck grabbed the rock and threw it.
The stone flew directly toward the creature.
It raised its arm to protect itself.
The impact forced it backward.
"It’s working!" Lena shouted.
The young woman raised her black sword.
"Then I want to help too!"
She ran toward one of the glowing plants.
She drove her sword into the ground, and the blade began to burn.
But she didn’t attack the creature.
Instead, she cut one of the roots connecting the plant to the ground.
The energy began dispersing.
Liam’s eyes widened.
"Lena!"
"What?"
"Do it to the others!"
Lena grinned.
"Got it, Boss!"
She ran toward one plant, then another, and another.
The creature began to panic.
There were fewer and fewer energy sources available.
"It’s working," Liam murmured.
Then the creature roared.
A wave of energy burst from its body.
Jordan raised his arms.
"Everyone, get back!"
The impact sent several hunters crashing to the ground.
Chloe fell to her knees.
Zayn lost his balance.
Nora lost control of her shadows.
Ray was dragged several yards backward.
Lena dropped her sword.
Chuck spun around, trying to shield his face.
And Jordan was the only one who remained standing.
"You won’t get through!" he roared.
The creature raised its arm again.
But this time, Liam noticed something.
A violet stream was leaving the creature’s body.
And it was heading toward Lydia’s small copy.
"Lydia!"
The copy floated a few yards away.
Her small slime body trembled.
The violet lines inside her glowed more intensely.
The creature was trying to absorb her.
Liam raised his pistol.
But before he could fire, Pix appeared beside him.
"Liam!"
"What is it?"
"Don’t attack!"
"What?"
Pix pointed at the copy.
"Look!"
Liam watched.
The violet energy was entering Lydia’s body, but it wasn’t disappearing. Nor did it seem to be hurting her.
The small copy was absorbing it.
"It’s not attacking her..." Liam murmured.
"No."
Pix looked surprised.
"Lydia is taking its energy."
Liam’s eyes widened.
The creature tried to reclaim the energy.
But it couldn’t.
For the first time, it backed away.
"It’s scared!" Pix said.
The creature roared again and tried to attack Lydia.
Jordan stepped in front of it.
"Don’t even think about it!"
The blow forced Jordan backward, but he managed to stop it.
Zayn started running again.
Nora regained control of one shadow.
Ray altered the density of the ground again.
Lena raised her sword.
Chloe extended her hands.
Chuck grabbed his knives, ready to throw them again.
And they all attacked at the same time.
They tried to prevent it from reaching Lydia.
Jordan blocked its arms.
Zayn deflected its attacks.
Nora trapped its legs.
Ray made the ground beneath its feet heavy.
Lena and Chuck destroyed the last plants that could provide it with energy.
And Chloe kept everyone connected, distributing the remaining energy so they could continue.
Meanwhile...
Lydia continued absorbing.
The violet lines across her body grew brighter.
The creature’s energy began to diminish.
Its enormous body started losing stability.
"Liam!"
Pix shouted.
"It’s working!"
Liam looked at his little wife.
’Lydia... what are you doing?’
The creature let out one final roar.
It tried to reclaim its energy, but it was already too late.
All the violet energy began leaving its body.
It flowed toward Lydia.
The copy absorbed the last fragment.
And then...
The creature fell to its knees.
Its body began breaking apart into violet particles.
It could no longer regenerate. It could no longer move. It had no energy left.
Liam slowly lowered his pistol.
"She did it..."
Pix smiled.
"Lydia stole all of its energy."
The small copy floated for a few more seconds.
Then she lost her strength, and her body fell.
Liam rushed forward and caught her between his hands.
"Lydia!"
The small mass of slime barely moved.
[Lydia: Liam...]
"I’m here, sweetheart."
[Lydia: I’m sleepy.]
Liam let out a sigh of relief.
"Then sleep."
The copy became still.
Liam carefully held her.
Pix watched the violet lines that still glowed faintly across her surface.
"Liam..."
"What?"
Pix took several seconds to answer.
"I think we just discovered something new about Lydia."
Liam looked at the small copy.
"What?"
Pix smiled with concern.
"Her consumption ability is evolving."
Liam remained silent as a system message appeared before his eyes.
[Your Slime consumed Dimensional Energy.]
[Your Slime reached Level 70.]
Lydia was about to achieve her next evolution...
And before them, the creature finally disappeared.
