Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 133: An Arrangement

Word of the fight’s outcome reached the Emperor within the hour, delivered by a runner who’d clearly sprinted the entire distance from the training hall, breathless and wide-eyed.

"Your Majesty," she gasped, "Guide Valerian’s fight with Sentinel Logan— it’s concluded. Julian won. decisively. and—" she hesitated, uncertain how to phrase the rest, "—by all accounts, he’s made it clear the reconciliation Sentinel Logan was hoping for isn’t happening. not now. possibly not ever."

The Emperor set down his quill slowly, something complicated settling behind his composed exterior. Relief, guilt, and a fresh, uncomfortable ache all tangled together at once — relief that wasn’t entirely his to feel given his own unresolved standing with Julian, guilt at the thought of Logan’s public, devastating loss, and something else entirely, quieter and more private, that he didn’t examine too closely in front of the waiting messenger.

"thank you," he said finally. "you’re dismissed."

She bowed and left, and the Emperor remained seated a long moment, staring at the stack of unfinished correspondence still cluttering his desk, the news settling heavy and complicated in his chest.

’he actually did it,’ he thought slowly. ’he let Logan fight for it, gave him a real chance, and still decided it wasn’t enough.’

He thought of his own days of missed visits, the guilt that had gnawed steady at him ever since, and felt something colder settle alongside the relief now — if Julian had drawn a hard, final line with Logan despite weeks of genuine, visible effort, what did that mean for the Emperor’s own far more inconsistent attempts at reconciliation?

’I need to see him,’ he thought again, the same resolution he’d made and broken nearly every day this week. ’properly, this time. before whatever patience he’s extended to the rest of us runs out entirely.’

A soft knock interrupted the thought, his secretary entering once more, this time with a sealed letter bearing the Elite Academy’s formal crest.

"Your Majesty," she said, "urgent correspondence from the Elite Academy’s council. they’re requesting immediate audience."

The Emperor accepted the letter, breaking the seal with careful, measured motion, scanning the contents with growing, weary irritation.

*Your Majesty,* it read, *in light of recent, widely circulated accounts regarding Guide Valerian’s extraordinary capabilities — demonstrated publicly during today’s training exhibition — this council formally requests an arrangement be made for a direct audience with the Guide in question. Given the scale of resources this Empire has expended in his name, and the evident danger his abilities may pose should they ever be turned toward ends contrary to Imperial interest, this council believes it is well past time for proper, formal introduction and evaluation.*

The Emperor’s jaw tightened, something sharp and protective flaring hot beneath his exhaustion.

’danger his abilities may pose,’ he thought, rereading the phrase with growing irritation. ’as though he’s some weapon to be evaluated rather than a man who single-handedly saved this entire capital.’

He set the letter down, exhaling slowly, forcing himself to consider the request with proper, careful diplomacy despite the surge of protective anger it had provoked.

"they’re not wrong that people are talking," he admitted aloud, mostly to himself. "word of what happened in that training hall will have spread through the entire capital by nightfall."

His secretary remained quiet, waiting for direction.

"draft a response," the Emperor said finally, voice hardening with careful, deliberate resolve. "acknowledge the council’s concerns. but make clear that any audience with Guide Valerian happens on his terms, in his own time, once he’s properly ready for it — not because the Elite Academy has decided its curiosity or discomfort outweighs everything he’s already sacrificed for this Empire."

"understood, Your Majesty."

She departed to begin drafting the response, and the Emperor sat alone once more, turning the day’s cascading developments over with mounting unease — Logan’s public, devastating loss, the Elite Academy’s mounting demands, and beneath all of it, his own unresolved guilt still sitting heavy and unaddressed.

---

At the Elite Academy, the council chamber buzzed with fresh, urgent energy as word of the training hall incident spread fast through the assembled nobles.

"multiple weapon manifestations," Lord Ashwynne said, disbelief and something sharper threading through his voice as he addressed the gathered council. "teleportation. speed beyond even our own SSS-Rank Sentinels. and this is a Guide we’re discussing, not some carefully vetted, properly trained combat specialist."

"exactly my concern," Lady Ferrow said, voice cool and pointed. "we’ve spent weeks demanding proper accountability regarding the resources this Empire spent searching for him. now we discover he possesses capability this Empire has never seen before, developing in real time, apparently without any oversight or containment whatsoever."

"containment," another lord repeated, something skeptical in his tone. "you make him sound like a threat rather than an asset."

"perhaps he’s both," Lady Ferrow said simply. "which is precisely why this council deserves proper audience with him. sooner, not later."

Mika sat near the back of the chamber once more, listening to the mounting demands with the same complicated, uncomfortable silence he’d carried through every session since the capital’s assault. He thought of the training hall, of secondhand accounts already circulating wildly through the Elite Academy’s halls — Julian summoning an entirely new weapon mid-fight, defeating Logan so thoroughly that Logan’s own blade had shattered under the pressure, and then, more quietly, more devastatingly, delivering a rejection cold enough that even hardened Sentinels who’d witnessed it firsthand had described it as harder to watch than the fight itself.

’he really is exactly what everyone’s been saying,’ Mika thought slowly, something he couldn’t quite name settling uneasy in his chest. ’not a lucky Guide who stumbled into power. something else entirely.’

"the request has already been sent to the Emperor," the chancellor said, drawing the council’s attention back to the matter at hand. "we await his response."

"and if he refuses," Lord Ashwynne pressed.

"then this council will have to decide," the chancellor said carefully, "how far it’s willing to push the matter."

The session dissolved into fresh, urgent debate, nobles exchanging heated opinions about strategy and precedent, and Mika remained quiet through most of it, turning over the uncomfortable, unresolved question of exactly where he still stood in all of this — his sabotage campaign long since collapsed under the weight of Julian’s undeniable heroism, his friendship with Dan fractured, his own private hopes regarding Logan now, according to every account reaching him, definitively and publicly extinguished.

’even if Julian’s out of the picture for Logan now,’ Mika thought slowly, the realization settling hollow and unwelcome in his chest, ’that doesn’t mean Logan’s suddenly available for me either. that’s not how any of this actually works, is it.’

The thought sat uncomfortable and new, and Mika found himself, for the first time in months, genuinely uncertain what he actually wanted anymore, watching the council’s mounting demands for audience with a man he’d spent so much energy trying to diminish, now standing revealed as something the entire Empire had clearly, thoroughly underestimated from the very beginning.
